Over the course of a year, a team of Journal Sentinel reporters, led by John Diedrich, examined the full extent of gun deaths in Wisconsin. It conducted a first-of-its-kind effort to obtain gun death data from every county, talked to dozens of gun owners about their experiences with firearms, and conducted the most in-depth survey of gun owners in Wisconsin to date. It was a series that looked at the fact that gun deaths in Wisconsin have doubled since 2004, largely driven by suicides, which on average, account for 71 of 100 fatal shootings each year in our state. This resulted in the project "Behind the gun". Kristin and Brian sit with both the Reporter John Diedtrich and veteran and gun store owner of Park Falls Essential Shooting Supplies, Chuck Lovelace to talk about the event "At the Intersection of Firearms and Mental Health" at the UW Center for Civic Engagement in Wausau.
