20: A Natural Approach to PANS / PANDAS with Dr. Scott Antoine Aug 25, 2022
    Show notes

Dr. Scott Antoine is a board-certified physician, author, speaker, and legislative advocate. In this episode, he discusses PANS and PANDAS and how one can support their child with this neuropsychiatric disorder as well as prevent it.

Dr. Scott explains what PANS and PANDAS is, as well as how he got introduced to the disorder through his daughter's diagnosis, the methods used to diagnose this disorder, and more. We also discuss the Cunningham Panel and its effectiveness toward PANDAS. Tune in to learn how to support your child using functional medicine and approaches.

When a child is acting out, caregivers may think it is typical child-like behavior. However, that's not always the case. There may be an infection that changes the child's neurological pathways and they start behaving differently. It's very important to identify the signs of peculiar behavior. It may be that the child may have PANS or PANDAS or another neuropsychiatric disorder.

    Key Takeaways:

[4:26] What is PANS or PANDAS and how Scott became involved

[8:24] Difference in symptoms between PANS and PANDAS

[13:27] The tests used to diagnose PANS or PANDAS

    [17:53] The Cunningham Panel

[25:55] How to treat these kids with PANS or PANDAS

How To Connect With Dr. Scott:

    Facebook: Healing PANS and PANDAS

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "PANDAS is Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep infection. These kids will get an infection with strep and then, afterward, sometimes months afterward, will have severe sudden onset OCD."
    • "PANS can be from other infections. It can be from toxins in the environment, so man made toxins or mycotoxins from mold exposure; there's a big tie-in. Or it can be from infections. So PANDAS is from stress, and it is actually a subtype from PANS."
    • "Very interestingly, the original papers written in 2014 have a little tiny sentence in there that said, 'Stress may be an initiator of a flare of PANS in some children.'"
    • "The simple answer is 0, none… it's a clinical diagnosis meaning there are signs and symptoms… There's just a list. It's a list of things and in the case of PANS or PANDAS, it's the sudden onset of severe OCD or restrictive eating or both, plus seven other categories."
    • "The Cunningham Panel, we've known for years that you can actually measure the antibodies to the brain tissue, they're called anti-neuralgic antibodies. The Cunningham Panel actually tests for about 4 of those anti-neuralgic antibodies."
    • "The first thing we do is identify exactly what's going on clinically and talk to the parents… it really is an amazing feeling for them to feel like someone is actually listening to them and not just telling them your child has diagnosis X and here is the medication for it."
    • "The 2nd step is reducing things that negatively impact their health, so that's where we start with diet, we start with stress reduction, reducing sympathetic overdrive, things like that."

We also dive into what ages are appropriate to start art therapy as well as how you can find an art therapist near you.

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "What I love about art therapy is that it actually breaks down any verbal barriers and becomes its own sort of language. So we use lines, shapes, and colors to really describe how we're feeling. And I find it to be one of the most effective ways to help kids express their emotions."
    • "Art therapy is actually an integrative mental health profession; it combines the knowledge and understanding of human development, psychological theories and techniques, and we combine that all in metaphors and the creative process."
    • "One thing about art, you can actually move it out of you and visually look at it. I can draw or paint a picture of all the things I'm holding inside."
    • "Instead of just talking about it and asking a kid, 'Why did you do that?', we have the ability to break it down into pieces visually and actually start to see patterns that are coming up for them."
    • "In the way that I work I do intertwine meditation, mindfulness, breathing techniques, all those calming skill sets that intertwine so beautifully together to give it a whole holistic approach."
    • "An art therapist is specifically trained to use art materials as part of the therapeutic process. And so they know the risks, the benefits of using each material, and have spent thousands of hours working under supervision to learn this process."
    • "You can go to the American Art Therapy Association, it's a website, and you can look up different registered therapists near you."

18: Implementation Strategies for Meal Prepping, Planning, and Eating Out with Andrea Daigle Aug 11, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we spoke with returning guest, Andrea Daigle. Andrea is part of my amazing team at ADHD Thrive Institute, a board-certified holistic health practitioner, and also a FDN-P. She is truly an expert when it comes to working with kids with ADHD and other similar disorders.

On this episode, we dive into the topic of meal prepping and how one can save an abundant amount of time in the kitchen by preparing bags of stew and freezing them, making a large amount of dinner to have leftovers for the next day, preparing a list of meals along with the list of ingredients at hand, and much more. We also talk about sneaking healthy fats and nutrient-dense foods into fruit smoothie bags to have a hearty and quick breakfast, lunch, or afternoon snack.

    Key Takeaways:

[4:29] Ways to save time in the kitchen

[5:42] How to effectively meal plan

[10:49] Fast, easy, and delicious meal prep options

[19:09] How to prepare for school lunches

[22:34] How to deal with days when you don't feel like cooking

    Connect with Andrea:

    https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/our-approach/

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "My number one tip for saving time in the kitchen is definitely meal planning… you're getting a really good all-around healthy variety… you're going to be saving money on the grocery bill and you're just going to have more free time."
    • "There are lots of different ways you can meal plan, but I really think fine-tuning it based on what works best for your family is going to be helpful."
    • "The next step that I always suggest is to check your calendar. Look ahead. What does your calendar look like for the next week? If you know you have a busy day coming, you really want to plan for that day to be something quick, easy, or even leftover."
    • "After you have all that ready, you have your plan, get a grocery list going. You create that list with everything you need. And block out some time to head to the store so that you can get all of those ingredients that you need for the week."
    • "I find the best and fastest things to meal plan would be things for breakfast, overnight oats. Overnight oats are so nutritious. You can make a big batch on the weekends, and they don't have to be the same everyday."
    • "We have this wonderful plan and we think it's great and then we get home and say, 'I don't feel like it'. I don't feel like it, my husband doesn't feel like it, so what do we do? I think it's very important to have some go-to options in your freezer."
    • "Every Friday, my family goes to our local pizza parlor and they have gluten/dairy-free pizza which is phenomenal. And I'm sure in your area, you can find a place that offers those options, and if they don't, you can omit the cheese… or bring your own cheese."

17: Parenting with Ashley Gobeil Aug 04, 2022
    Show notes

Ashley Gobeil specializes in Counseling Psychology and works in the fields of family therapy, school counseling, domestic violence, and all things pertaining to childhood trauma. She is truly an expert in healing children and adults.

In this episode, Ashley shares how to create behavioral changes for children and families as a whole, different parenting skills we need to develop such as compassionate empathy for our children, and how long it actually takes for our frontal lobes to fully develop. We discuss how to turn our frustration and anger into empathy, as well as how easily children mirror our behavior, which can be a very good way to change bad habits in both parents and children.

It's imperative as a parent to learn how to effectively observe your child. Many parents want a shut-off button when their child starts to act out, but Ashley makes it evident that there's no one-solves-all solution for that. We must learn and adapt from our child's behavior in order to understand how they feel and also build trust with them.

    Key Takeaways:

[3:44] Creating behavioral changes for families and children

[6:53] Parenting skills needed to shift behavior in our kids with ADHD

[10:02] How long it takes for a child's frontal lobe to develop

[11:55] How to turn anger into compassion

[20:01] How to apply our knowledge into practice

[24:30] Children can mirror the healthy habits of parents

    How To Connect With Ashley:

    Jumpstart for Parenting: https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "The way we approach our parenting, it actually must change if we really want to create behavioral change for children with ADHD."
    • "Compliance doesn't actually support healthy emotional regulation. We really want to be thinking about how we can build and support our kids with ADHD, to continue with that emotional regulation so they can eventually self-soothe and self-regulate."
    • "Compassionate empathy… that real skill in our parenting that is genuine empathy flows from us to our children when they're struggling… If they could do well, they would."
    • "If they've been in the habit of responding a certain way to a certain situation, it's going to be a habit."
    • "That's the beauty of the brain and that's the beauty of children and the parent-to-child relationship because we can co-soothe them. We can co-regulate. We can change our approach to be more responsive and therapeutic."

16: Neurodevelopment with Dr. Aimie Apigian Jul 28, 2022
    Show notes

As parents, we want the absolute best for our children, but it's hard when our child is not confiding in us for important events that may have a significant effect on their behavior. What seems like a minor issue for one may seem like the sky is falling for another, so we should definitely be paying more attention to how our children react to certain situations.

In this episode, Dr. Aimie Apigian shares why we're in an epidemic of overly anxious kids and adults, how we need to redefine what trauma actually is, how trauma therapy differs from traditional therapy, and more. We also talk about how traumatic events can be passed down from the mother's nervous system to the child's and how neurodevelopment plays a huge factor in ADHD and other mental disabilities amongst children.

Dr. Aimie is a Board-Certified Preventive Medicine physician, speaker, and founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated, LLC, Family Challenge Camps, and host of Bio-Optimize Summit. Today, she is here to talk about all things trauma and how to properly deal with it instead of finding ways to suppress it.

    Key Takeaways:

[3:45] Understanding the different labels and diagnoses for our children's disabilities

[6:45] We're in an epidemic of overly traumatized and anxious kids

[13:37] Redefining trauma to help process it

[19:56] Working with kids with different trauma patterns

[27:03] How trauma healing differs from traditional therapy

[34:07] Neurodevelopment phase for kids with ADHD

    How To Connect With Aimie:

    • Website: https://www.traumahealingaccelerated.com/

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "One's attachment style actually just refers to their relationship with the world and themselves, coming out of childhood."
    • "So you can have an avoidant attachment style, an anxious attachment style, you can have this disorganized attachment style, where it's a combination of both avoidant and anxious. And then you can have a healthy style, which is what we all want our kids to have, which is, you know, we're secure."
    • "As parents, we do our best. And what happens is that, as parents, we are passing on our nervous system to our children. Even when we think, oh, I won't show them that side of myself, I won't show them my insecurities, I won't show them my fears… And yet, whatever our nervous system is, we pass that on to our children, and that happens non-verbally."
    • "It's so important for us to be able to recognize these patterns in ourselves and know that most children are coming out of their childhood with a degree of insecurity. And it's setting them up with a life that feels hard and lonely."
    • "One of the things actually that gives me a sense of how much trauma is in the child is the eye-contact. When I'm watching them engage with mom, how much eye-contact do they give mom? For some of the more severely traumatized kids I've worked with… they will only be able to look at their mom when they are lying to her."
    • "Parents need to be the answer for their children. That's what they're looking for. Children are looking for their parents to be the answer… It's not possible to actually heal trauma when we send our children away to somebody else. We've got to do that work."

15: Chiropractic Care and ADHD with Dr. Brian Stenzler Jul 21, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of Soaring Child, we had a conversation with Dr. Brian Stenzler. Brian is a Chiropractic Doctor and author. He is also co-founder of Dream Wellness and has operated numerous wellness centers in New York and California where he has helped thousands of families achieve their health and wellness goals.

There are many gems in this episode regarding chiropractic care and ADHD, but the main ideas are how negative stressors deeply impact the nervous system, how chiropractic care helps regulate those stressors in the spine which is where the nervous system flows, SEMG scans to see where the misalignment in your child's spine may be, and more. We also discuss what is the appropriate age to start chiropractic care and the 5 essential keys to living a long and healthy life.

Brian is truly a masterful chiropractor who has taken his craft to the next level. Spine misalignments can have detrimental effects on our health, so it's very important to get care for your child as soon as possible if they have been diagnosed with ADHD or other mental disorders. If you want to learn more about the keys to healing the spine and nervous system, be sure to pick up his book Dream Wellness: The 5 Keys of Raising Kids with a Lifetime of Physical and Mental Health, available anywhere books are sold!

Here is the link to find a Chiropractor that uses the technology discussed in the episode https://insightchiros.com/

    Takeaways:

[3:41] What types of stressors negatively impact the nervous system

[7:14] What age is good to start chiropractic care

[9:26] How chiropractic care impacts the function of the nervous system

[15:54] SEMG scan to see misalignment areas

[21:30] What goes into the healing plan with chiropractic care

Where to find Dr. Brian Stenzler:

    • Website: https://drbrianstenzler.com/
    • IG: @drbrianstenzler
    • Facebook: Brian Stenzler

    Memorable quotes:

"A child would need to be realigned when they're not in alignment. So if it's at birth during the birthing process, that's when it should happen. Or if it's three months after birth, that's when it should happen."

"And that's why it's good to have a chiropractor in your health team. A kid is not going to tell you 'hey my neck hurts', or 'I have a headache'. A baby is not going to be able to communicate that."

"We live our lives in the nervous system, everyone of us. It doesn't matter if you're a day old or a hundred years old. Every organ, every muscle, every gland, every tissue, every single cell in the body knows exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it because the brain tells it so."

"We always let the parent know we're not here to treat any disease or condition. We're looking to see how the nervous system is functioning."

"As a chiropractor, the way that I practice is I never base where I was going to adjust based on the symptom, I did it based on what I found to be out of adjustment."

"More times than not with ADHD, it's almost always the atlas bone, the top bone of the neck and the axis below it. those are almost always the ones involved… and sometimes just by adjusting the atlas, the rest of the spine will follow."

"So the course of care is going to be determined by the severity of the subluxation pattern, how long have they been out of adjustment for, what is their lifestyle like, what is their commitment… we have some kids that may need 2 or 3 times a week, some kids that need once a week… all depends on what it takes to reset that nervous system."

"One of my mentors used to talk about rehabituation rather than rehabilitation… we want to create new habits for not only lifestyle but for the muscles to settle into their current place."

Finally, parents will have a guide to effectively help their child with ADHD, something I wish I had when my child was first diagnosed.

The book will offer different crucial strategies to help support our children with ADHD naturally, such as the backbone of natural ADHD symptom reduction, which foods they should and should not eat, as well as a step-by-step guide to meal planning, supplements, superfoods, and more. I also talk about the most common obstacles caregivers run into when they begin changing their child's diet and how to maneuver around them.

After my son's diagnosis, I did not know what to do, where to start, or even how to start. With the help of this book, that will no longer be an issue for parents and caregivers. Order now and learn how to effectively reduce ADHD symptoms the natural way.

    Key Takeaways

    [4:31] What's in the book

    Memorable Quotes

"Can you relate to that desperate search for answers, that constant googling for something, for anything, that might actually help you get some relief from those challenging ADHD behaviors? If so, then this episode is definitely for you."

"When I was looking for that book, I struck out, over and over again. There was no book for me that gave me the information I needed in a way that I could understand and really implement effectively."

"Novelist, Toni Morrison, once said that, 'If you find a book that you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it'. So, that's what I did!"

"I am so excited to announce that my book, Thriving with ADHD: A Guide to Naturally Reducing ADHD Symptoms in Your Child, is launching into the world! This is my first book, and I think it's really going to be helpful for caregivers of children with ADHD."

"In Chapter 1, we explore the backbone of natural ADHD symptom reduction, why it works, and what the science and the real life experience has taught me."

"In Chapter 2 and 3, you'll learn what foods to eat for ADHD as well as what foods to avoid and why. In Chapter 4 and 5, I'll clear up any confusion you might have about superfoods, GMOs, and organic produce."

"In Chapter 6, I'll provide a step-by-step guide to meal planning, to remove all the stress and confusion of this often dreaded task. In chapter 7, I'll help you avoid the traps that many caregivers I work with fall into."

"Then in chapter 8, we'll talk about supplements. In chapters 9 and 10, we'll explore some of the more common obstacles caregivers of children with ADHD run into when they begin changing their diet."

"In chapters 11 and 12, we'll look at what to do when a caregiver makes all of these changes and their child is still struggling."

13: Essential Oils and ADHD with Jodi Cohen Jul 07, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we had a conversation with Jodi Cohen. Jodi is a Functional Practitioner, best-selling author, award-winning journalist, and founder of Vibrant Blue Oils. In this talk, we dive deep into the topic of essential oils and how they can help treat kids with ADHD.

Jodi discusses the many different types of oils and their intentions, the different ways to smell or consume oils, and how to choose the right oil for your child. Many times, we don't get the right amount of oxygen or stimuli in the brain when our nervous system is under attack. So simply applying some oil around the nose will calm our nervous system down because we know that smell is deeply correlated with memory.

Jodi mentions that kids love scents. However, for those who don't, there are other methods that can help ease their stress, like applying some oil on their hands or feet. She says that kids love it so much that they'll have their oils in their backpack ready just in case their emotions get the best of them. Tune in to find out more on the correlation between essential oils and ADHD!

    Memorable quotes:

"One of the challenges with ADHD and anything related to different areas of the brain, is that it is super hard to get anything into the brain because it has a great security system."

"The more you can kind of center yourself and ground yourself using oils like vetiver, cedar wood, frankincense, lavender, things that are kind of rooted in the earth."

"Especially if you have a squirmy little guy who doesn't necessarily like the smell of oils but will let you rub their feet. That's a really great place to start. If you had to pick one, I would say vetiver or frankincense."

"Out of all the ways that you can use oils, putting them on your skin, especially if they're deluded, is the least harmful."

"Smell is correlated with memory, so we just teach them… when your heart starts beating really fast, you can either teach them to apply the parasympathetic behind their earlobe, or you can just say, this is your happy smell."

"It starts in your brain. Your hypothalamus tells your pituitary to tell your adrenal glands to release this stress hormone, cortisol, which gives you kind of the energy to deal with stressful situations."

"Some of the moms that were skeptical are like, my kid always has it in their backpack. You know, it must be working. If something helps you, you don't forget to use it."

"I don't recommend using oils with kids that are under 2 years old just because they're so little and oils are so powerful."

12: Getting Your Child the Proper Testing with Piper Gibson Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we had a conversation with Piper Gibson. Piper is a Board Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine, Holistic Nutrition, and Micronutrient Specialist. She is also a mother of a diagnosed child and walks us through her tumultuous yet amazing journey.

We dive into the symptoms of tics, main drivers of inflammation, nutrigenomics testing, and how we can change the influence of our genes. Piper puts a strong emphasis on getting the proper testing done for your child in order to really decipher what is causing their neurological disorder. Testing can be expensive, but she also discusses what people can do to make it as cost-efficient as possible. The food our child eats and the environment in which they live has a lot to do with how they act. It can also be genetic, which is not something that is talked about often.

    Takeaways:

[3:29] Connection between tics and ADHD

[4:35] Symptoms and dangers of tics

    [7:28] Main drivers of inflammation

[8:52] What influences our genes and how we can change them

    [12:32] What is nutrigenomics

[14:44] Tests for people with a limited budget

    [17:12] There's no one-size-fits-all diet

[18:40] Importance of maintaining dietary changes

    Memorable quotes:

"When we talk about inflammation, it's not just, oh I got inflammation in my pinky finger. It's really systemic, perhaps our whole body."

"It's really a movement disorder and most symptoms happen facially. People are scrunching their faces and a lot of kids are jerking their necks or clapping their hands or rapid eye blinking."

"Your environment plays a big role in how your body is going to function."

"Really using the right test from the start and getting the right answers from somebody who knows how to analyze them is going to be worth any extra investment that you are going to make."

"My first test would be a food sensitivity test just to really refine the diet."

"I think that a huge part of the process for my clients is that it teaches their children how to listen to their body."

We dive into topics such as what the first steps are in teaching how to help with emotional kids, understanding key elements of working memory, and the importance of using simple steps when teaching. Above all, patience is the most important component of working with emotional kids. Memorable quotes:

"The first thing I want teachers to understand is what it's like to be this child. What it's like to be this child in the classroom."

"Whether the teacher is a kindergarten teacher or a middle school teacher or a high school teacher, I think it's really important for them to have that understanding so that they can work more fairly with the student."

"One of the first things I do is help them understand executive functioning for all people, because we all have executive functioning."

"When people ask me what I do for a living, I say I manage parental anxiety. I help teachers calm their class down."

"I really help teachers and parents understand how to empower their students so they feel like they have a role and a responsibility for what's going on in their lives."

"What I think teachers need to do is teach everybody how the brain works, and that some people's brains get more activated when they move."

"They actually found that chewing gum for some kids will help them do better on a test."
