30: Acupuncture & ADHD with Robin Green Nov 03, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's edition of Soaring Child, Robin Green shows us how an ancient Chinese healing technique can help kids with ADHD. Robin is an author, speaker, educator and founder of Pediatric Healing Arts, as well as a pediatric specialist in acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

The unfortunate reality is that kids are getting sicker today instead of healthier. Much of it has to do with unprecedented levels of toxic exposure in our environment including EMFs, poor food quality, and pollution. This affects our kids' ability to get the sleep and nutrients they need, which in turn affects their overall health.

Toxic exposure shows itself behaviorally and emotionally through hyperactivity, aggression, defiant behaviors, and ADHD. So how do you get the nervous system to come back into balance? Acupuncture and acupressure are great ways to restore the flow of energy and re-align the body so those negative behaviors and emotions neutralize.

The healing techniques of acupressure and acupuncture have been around for more than 3,000 years. Applying pressure, or inserting tiny needles at meridian points in the body, helps to restore balance and relieve pain.

For kids with ADHD, acupuncture and acupressure trigger that relaxation response that helps a child get balanced again. These treatments can relieve headaches, regulate the nervous system, and help a child focus. You can also tap or press on the area between the eyebrows to relieve tension and stress in your child. When kids get a little older, pediatric needles are very effective, and kids don't even feel them because they are so tiny. Phototherapy patches can also be helpful.

Finding a doctor who uses an array of these modalities is ideal so treatment can be tailored to your child specifically.

    Key Takeaways:

    [9:14] How acupuncture works

[10:47] Using acupressure on the ear with ear seeds that are like jewelry

[17:34] Wave phototherapy patches for kids and how they work

[19:03] How families determine what modality is right for their child

    [21:14] Licensing for acupuncturists

[21:59] Finding your child's power foods

    Memorable Quotes:

"We're seeing unprecedented levels of toxic exposure, of EMF exposure, which can in even tiny amounts affect the developing brain and affect our children's ability to get a good, deep restful sleep."

"We're also experiencing dramatic changes in the quality of our food. The food that's supposed to be nourishing our bodies, even when we're eating organic, is just not giving the nutrients we were getting even 20, 30 years ago."

"Using acupuncture and pressure stimulation is a very gentle, easy way that children can accept that will be very balancing to their nervous system."

"Ear seeds are a perfect way to stimulate the meridian points, balance the nervous system, and address conditions in a 'set it and forget it' way."

"Children's bodies have so much energy because they're growing and developing, so just a tiny amount of stimulation is required to get the desired results. So with those tiny little pediatric needles, we just tap it in and take it out immediately."

"Before puberty is a really important window where we can have a dramatic transformation in their health and behavior and really change the trajectory of their entire life for the better."

28: ADHD Parenting - More on Tips/Tools with Ashley Gobeil Oct 20, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, Ashley Gobeil shares specific tools to help kids with ADHD.

When an ADHD child is reacting to a situation emotionally, their brain has a "flipped lid" and the upstairs and downstairs parts of the brain aren't working together. One way to deal with it is to name the emotion (name it to tame it) to validate the child's feelings until they can calm down so the two parts of the brain come together again. Try to ride the wave of emotion with your child and maintain relational safety without judgment. Then your child will be able to access their problem-solving, logical side.

Another strategy is "connection before correction." Use relational connection first to change behavior before trying to correct the behavior and deliver consequences. Do it with a level of kindness and empathy while holding firm to your parenting boundaries.

These strategies require practice and consistency to rewire both the parent's and child's brain over time, but they are effective tools to keep in your ADHD toolkit to support your child's nervous system.

    Key Takeaways:

[4:04] How ADHD kids get a flipped lid

    [6:28] Validating your child's emotions

[14:20] Using connection before correction to change behavior

[17:58] How to avoid the reactive parenting brain

[21:36] How to reconnect and repair after a rupture

[24:40] What to do if there are no natural consequences around a behavior

    [29:35] Why consistency is important

    Memorable Quotes:

"It doesn't really matter if you don't get to the root of what is driving bad behavior. It's just showing them that you see it."

"I try to step away from punishment and consequences because we know that it won't land. When the upstairs brain is gone, the logic's gone."

"It's important as parents to become really self-aware of what our triggers are."

"What does repair look like? It's not just saying sorry; it's much more about connecting and having a calm conversation."

"Consequences and punishments have very short-lived shelf lives. They often don't work sustainably in terms of regulation and behavioral change."

27: ADHD Superpowers with April Tierney Oct 13, 2022
    Show notes

There are hidden advantages of ADHD, and it's a subject most people don't talk about. On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we connect with April Tierney, a lifelong educator who specializes in teaching students with ADHD. April shares how kids with ADHD can embrace their superpowers and do better at school.

April cites eight superpowers of ADHD, which include high physical, mental, and verbal energy, as well as huge amounts of creativity. Many ADHD kids are wonderful artists, musicians, gamers, and comedians. People with ADHD are three times more likely to start their own business, and many have a heightened sense of adventure.

Other ADHD superpowers are multitasking and being empathetic, which makes some ADHD children pursue helping professions. But perhaps the biggest superpower is hyper focus, the ability to focus on something really hard for a long time.

So how do parents help their kids to use their superpowers for good? Pay attention to your child's interests and try new things, offering your child different choices to see what they really like to do. Integrate things they enjoy into everyday tasks like schoolwork. Be sure to incorporate movement into learning or habit reinforcement.

If you can get your child involved in the task or subject you're teaching with something they already love, that's going to go a long way.

    Key Takeaways:

[7:27] Eight superpowers of ADHD children

[10:14] Why variety of choices is important for kids with ADHD

[24:54] Why physical exercise is so important for kids with ADHD

[26:20] How to bring in the student voice

    Memorable Quotes:

"These students need more confidence being thrown their way because I think sometimes our world doesn't appreciate all the gifts that they have."

"My favorite ADHD superpower is hyper focus, that ability to focus for a really long time on something you love. It tends to go against what people think ADHD is. So many people think, well, if you have ADHD, you just spend the whole day like squirrels, right?"

"I think choice boards are becoming more popular where there's many ways to show what a student knows about a subject – it could be their writing, making a brochure, gaming, or shooting a video."

"Somehow working movement into everyday classroom life with something as mundane as answering questions, maybe they stand up when they answer a question, maybe they do a certain movement for a different answer but bringing movement into the classroom in any way that you can benefits all students."

"Without motivation, it's really difficult for a student who has ADHD to concentrate. So connecting whatever it is they're learning to something they already love or something new they might love is really important."

"Physical exercise is one of the most effective, natural ways to reduce the not-so-great parts of ADHD. So when we take away recess, that creates more behavior issues."

26: Amino Acids For ADHD and Anxiety with Jess Sherman Oct 06, 2022
    Show notes

If you suspect that your child has anxiety because they exhibit a lot of fear and worry, this episode of Soaring Child will help you identify ways to alleviate that anxiety in their body and mind.

Jess Sherman is a family health educator who helps parents ease their children's anxiety and improve their learning and stress tolerance. She is a certified teacher, a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, and the author of Raising Resilience.

The latest statistics show us that we are in a national crisis when it comes to mental health. Research has shown that anxiety is directly related to the body and its nutrition. The more resilient a child's body is when stressors come, the less affected they are by anxiety.

It starts with biology and nutrition -- kids need the nutritional building blocks (whole foods) to create neurotransmitters and allow their hormones to heal. They also need to learn skills and tactics to bring their nervous system back into a calm state so that they can think rationally. It's also important to retrain neural pathways in a child's brain to help shift a nervous system back to a different state of being than anxiety.

Parents should also look at the way they attend to their own health and stress load to break those cycles of stress and anxiety that get passed down to children. When parents can center themselves and make themselves healthy, their children will benefit.

    Key Takeaways:

[3:50] Why American children are suffering a mental health crisis

[6:16] Why different kids react differently to stress and anxiety

[8:34] Why having a resilient body is important

[9:25] The vicious cycle of stress and anxiety and how to break it

[11:34] Why kids need biological resources and nutrition to fight anxiety

[12:49] Why kids need skills, tools, and tactics to fight anxiety

[13:14] Retraining neural pathways to fight anxiety

[17:06] Identifying the triggers of stress

[20:00] Behavioral signals as a symptom of stress

    https://www.jesssherman.com/RaisingResilience

    https://www.jesssherman.com/blog

    Memorable Quotes:

"When I got into nutrition, that's when my mind exploded. Anxiety is about how the body is receiving stress and it makes all the difference. And so what are the factors inside the body that make or break that stressful experience?"

"There's so much we can do to improve the resilience of the body so that when the stressors come, they land differently on that more resilient body. A child can actually grow from that stress rather than getting crippled by it."

"Kids get stuck in a vicious cycle -- their biological stress leads to their psychological stress, which is affecting the environment around them, which is affecting their biology, which is affecting their social skills. They're just stuck in this cyclone."

"When a nervous system is really primed to be in an anxious state, then a child will get stuck in that stress response. Retraining neural pathways can really help shift a nervous system back to a different state of being. So the three elements are the biological piece, the skills and tools and tactics, and retraining pathways."

"When the body is in a state of inflammation, these other tactics can't work as well as they should."

"If you want to ease anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders and depression, your child needs to be eating, sleeping, and pooping."

"Pandemic research has shown that a child's response to anxiety is tied to their caregivers' response. So the more calm, cool and collected their caregivers have been, the better the kids are faring."

25: Stress and the Negative Impact it Can Have on a Child's Brain with Emily Fletcher Sep 29, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at the role stress can play on a child's developing brain and behavior. Our guest is Emily Fletcher, the founder of Ziva, the first meditation course for kids aged 4 to 14, and author of the bestseller, Stressless.

When the body reacts to stress, it's flooded with the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, which are acidic in nature and can lead to inflammation in the body.

One of the best ways to reduce stress in your child's brain is through meditation, which can reduce inflammation. Since the prefrontal cortex is not totally developed in a child's brain, parents need to act as that prefrontal cortex for their kids. This means that parents themselves need to bring down their own stress levels because kids are so permeable and can pick up the stress of their parents. If a child is watching his or her parents meditate every day, they see the behavioral changes in their parents and want to protect that time for their parents.

Breathwork is also extremely important in lowering stress levels, and when we teach kids to do "belly balloon breathing," we're strengthening the connection between the gut and the brain and lowering stress at the same time.

Fifteen minutes of meditation can give you the equivalent of an hour and a half worth of sleep. Meditation can be a lifelong tool to destress your mind and body. If you can give your child this skill early on, they will have it their whole life.

    Key Takeaways:

[3:54] How stress causes inflammation in our bodies

[07:37] The gut brain connection that meditation can improve

[12:37] How the Ziva program was created

[17:36] How physical and emotional detox occurs during meditation

[19:18] Why kids are happy when their parents meditate

[23:28] How sleep, anxiety and depression improve through meditation

[25:32] Why starting meditation as a child is so important

    Memorable Quotes:

"What most parents don't realize is that stress is a big driver for inflammation in our kid's body and brain and their behavior is affected and they really need to learn different practices to be able to help."

"I work with kids with ADHD. I know that stress is a huge component of it, and I know that meditation works."

"We're swimming in a stressy world. So we're going to help kids unlock those superpowers that are already inside of them."

"One of the magical things about Ziva is that we're not just healing the stress from today. We're actually healing all of the accumulated stress from our past. And when we do that, there is a catharsis that can happen."

"Kids are in an alpha theta state of consciousness until they're eight years old. And there's a big shift that happens around seven to eight years old. And so if you can teach your child to meditate before then, they get to keep that connection."

"The sooner you can start the better. It's like learning a language in a way. When you learn as a child, it's a lot easier than when you're an adult."

24: Common Obstacles When Implementing Dietary Changes with Andrea Daigle Sep 22, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at the challenges to keeping your kids eating the right foods. Andrea Daigle is a regular on the show and is a board-certified holistic health practitioner and a member of the team at the ADHD Thrive Institute. She specializes in coaching families through making diet changes through food choices, meal planning, and getting buy-in from not just the kids, but also the extended family.

The most important step is clear communication on a daily basis. Have family discussions about what specific steps need to be taken and what the long-term goals are.

Have the kids get involved with meal planning, and take them grocery shopping. Get your whole family in the habit of reading labels to see which foods are healthy and which foods aren't.

Be sure to comment on the positive changes as they occur. When grandparents try to give your children sweets and sabotage all your efforts, offer them a healthy bag of treats for their house instead of the ice cream and candy. Encourage them to offer other "bonuses" like trips to the park or a shopping spree at the dollar store.

Eating healthy from a young age is a great way to raise awareness about nutrition. Your kids will develop a lifelong understanding of ingredients and nutritional value even as they become adults.

    Key Takeaways:

[5:04] Common obstacles to changing diet in kids

[6:13] When your partner isn't on board with dietary changes

[9:40] Getting the rest of the family to buy in to the changes

[12:29] Stressing the positive changes through communication

[13:56] How to get the grandparents on board with dietary changes

[18:19] How to handle birthday parties

[21:26] How to handle trips to the neighbor's house

    Memorable Quotes:

"It is so important to set aside a time where you and your partner can just be together and start a discussion, really talk through what's going on and what needs to change. Really be mindful and talk through it together."

"When we started this journey with my son, my goal was to be able to wake up in the morning without dreading what mood my son would be in for that day."

"For my son, what I found really helpful was getting him to understand why we are doing what we're doing."

"I started very, very slow. I would swap the old bread with the new bread and take these baby steps. And when my son's behavior started improving, that was when I could really have a conversation with him."

"The best part about it is my kids actually prefer the cupcakes that we bring over to the ones that are at the party now."

"Talk to your neighbors and let them know your child has dietary restrictions. Most of them are very supportive of this. Give them a whole bag of safe treats they can keep in their pantry."

23: Picky Eating with Katie Kimble Sep 15, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at the challenges parents face when it comes to getting their kids to eat right. How do you make nutritious foods appealing to those picky eaters? Katie Kimble is a picky-eating expert and the national voice of Healthy Kids Cooking. She is also a blogger, former teacher, and mother of four kids.

Katie points out that the biggest obstacle is that parents are not teaching kids to cook. It's important to spend time in the kitchen with your kids and even take them to the farmer's market to show them the variety of foods out there.

One of the first steps is to wean them away from traditionally favorite foods, like macaroni and cheese, pizza, and pancakes. Put a wide variety of foods on the table, especially those that are low in gluten, dairy, and sugar. Don't provide snacks too close to dinner time, which will lower your kid's willingness to try new things.

Put out a vegetable tray when kids get home from school and are hungry, or start dinners with a healthy, veggie-filled soup first.

Some children may have never learned how to chew meat properly or eat crunchy vegetables, and there could be issues going on with their gut health. An occupational therapy evaluation might be helpful.

And remember, sometimes it's not about the food but rather the relationship to the parent and their reactions. Parents should keep a "poker face" when serving healthy foods to their picky eaters and not engage in a power struggle to eat. Using positive language is also important when exposing your child to new foods, while putting lots of healthy options on the table.

    Memorable Quotes:

"Our generation is generally uncomfortable in the kitchen. No one is teaching their kids to cook."

"If kids have not had a lot of experience and practice chewing crunchy things and real meat, they literally might not know how to chew and swallow correctly, which is mind-blowing."

"We've got to make sure we're not entering into those power struggles because when we dig in our heels, they do the same thing."

"One of the most powerful ways to help kids build the relationship with food is to completely take away any expectation to eat."

"We've got to get them involved in the kitchen, at the farmer's market, choosing those foods, washing the vegetables, learning how to tear lettuce. All of those exposure points are getting them closer to potentially interacting with the food in their mouth."

22: A Successful View of ADHD with Chris Haddad Sep 08, 2022
    Show notes

Please note: This podcast includes words or language that might be considered coarse or offensive to some listeners.

On this week's episode of Soaring Child, we take a look at ADHD from the perspective of someone who's had it. Chris Haddad is considered one of the best direct response copywriters in the world, as well as a best-selling author of the book, The Language of Desire. He's also overcome several mental health challenges, including ADHD and bipolar disorder.

Chris shares his story of feeling tortured in his head all the time and not being able to emotionally regulate. He teaches students they've got everything they need inside of them to understand everyone around them, because we are all just human beings in pain and share so many of the same emotions.

He teaches those with ADHD that it's not their fault and that there's nothing wrong with them. It's just how their brain operates chemically. He helps them understand they can be very successful financially and professionally by overcoming guilt and focusing on the positives. Many children with ADHD are quick thinkers, witty conversationalists, and have lots of energy.

Many kids think they're being ostracized by others when in reality, they're ostracizing themselves. It's not that their brains are inferior; they're just different. Chris points out that a lot of the most brilliant people in the world have had ADHD. Acceptance and a feeling of respect for those with ADHD is also important.

Chris's advice to parents with children struggling with ADHD is this: Love them for what they are and not what you want them to be. There's nothing wrong with them, and make sure they know that. They just have a different kind of brain. His advice to kids with ADHD is to be kind to yourself.

    Key Takeaways:

[10:20] How Chris's teachers discovered he was really smart

[10:44] Challenges of high school, college, and youth

    Memorable Quotes:

"People ask me why I'm good at what I do and why I'm good at the empathy side of things particularly. And I think it's just because with ADHD and bipolar, it heightens everything."

"It was always a joke that I was ADHD for most of my life, but I would never go to a psychiatrist or get diagnosed or get meds or anything like that. And I spent most of my youth thinking I was lazy, thinking there was something wrong with me."

"The biggest thing I learned was mental health issues are not a moral failing. A lot of kids who have ADHD go through life thinking it's their fault, that there is something wrong with them or they're not trying hard enough. All of that stuff is just crap."

"Just because you're dealing with ADHD, bipolar schizophrenia, or whatever it is, yeah it's hard. It is really, really hard, but you can still reach a level of what people consider success, financial or otherwise. You can have an impact on people."

    21: Eczema & ADHD with Dr. Ana-Maria Temple Sep 01, 2022
    Show notes

Dr. Ana-Maria Temple is a holistic pediatrician, best-selling author, mother of 3, and award-winning speaker. In this episode, she shares what eczema is and how to prevent and cure it. She also speaks about the dangers of mold toxicity and how to start the process of food elimination. Just when we think we know about the boundaries of ADHD, we get reminded that it can expand to other different types of illnesses in the body.

Skin health is just as important as brain and gut health because our skin is an external reflection of our inner body. Healing the skin starts with healing the gut and the brain. Tune in to find out more about eczema and find ways to fight and prevent it!

    Key Takeaways:

[3:38] What eczema is and how it is correlated with ADHD

    [6:33] Prescribed medicine for eczema

    [12:35] Quebec Ice Storm study

[14:40] The condition of the skin is a reflection of the condition of the gut

[22:24] Detrimental effects of mold on the skin and lungs

[28:28] There is no simple solution to curing eczema

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "Eczema is usually red, patchy… it looks like flame, it looks like red hot lava (I'm a pediatrician, so I talk in kid terminology). A lot of times in babies, we'll see their cheeks be red hot lava… eczema is when those red cheeks don't go away and they get worse and worse."
    • "Now we're eating strawberries and now the red cheeks are flaring even more, now we're eating bananas and avocado (and I'm not beating up on food, I'm just giving examples). And then all of a sudden, the redness from the cheeks is now red hot lava neck."
    • "We have kids that have dry skin but it's not just dry skin. It's dry skin and then they sit and they scratch and they dig and they have trouble sleeping at night and they're crying throughout the day. It seems whatever they eat, they flare up. They go outside, they flare up."
    • "I get very weary because a lot of the prescribed medications are topical steroids, oral antibiotics, and of course, the latest and greatest, Dupixent - and I say that with a lot of sarcasm."
    • "Modern medicine does work for some people but we're talking 'some people,' and turning it into all people… we do not have this much data on this medication; we do not know the long-term effects of Dupixent."
    • "What a lot of people don't know is that the medications that are linked to the increased appearance of eczema is actually Tylenol. We give babies Tylenol and it's no big deal… Teething is overly diagnosed by the parents because they want to put a name to the fussiness. And then they're like, 'Let me give them Tylenol.' Tylenol is sugar and food dyes."
    • "They took the pregnant ladies that were displaced in the ice storm and these mamas had to live with cousins and uncles… and they compared these moms to other pregnant moms in Canada. They followed them around for 15 years and they looked to see what was the endpoint? Did anything happen to their children? And they saw an increase in ADHD, neurological developmental issues, delay in neurocognitive function, speech delays, verbal delays, autism, eczema, asthma, diabetes, and cancer."
    • "Without healing the gut, paying attention to what's in your child's diet, in your own diet if you're nursing, it is very difficult to cure the skin with just a cream."
    • "I'm not saying no to processed foods. It's how much are you really having and then we're going to turn those around and read the ingredients. If you can't read it, don't eat it."
