    Show notes

Today's guest has been looking for something a lot deeper and more meaningful than a typical definition of success throughout her life. For years she actually suffered from a long list of physical, emotional, and financial issues. After giving away all of her possessions and taking an extended spiritual journey, she stumbled upon everything she needed to find health, well-being, and financial security. And she's here today to share all of that with us and that journey. Her name is Joan Sotkin. She's an award winning holistic business and money coach. She's the host of the Prosperity Show Podcast, and the author of 'Build Your Money Muscles'. She teaches business owners and independent practitioners how to improve their relationship with money and themselves so that they can build a stronger, more profitable business. Increased income, greater peace of mind, feeling more connected, and finding a new sense of purpose are just a few of the results that her clients have cited as a result of working with Joan.

    123: Lauren Bowling, Founder of LBeeandtheMoneyTree.com May 14, 2015
    Show notes

Today's guest is Lauren Bowling. She's the founder of the personal finance website lbandthemoneytree.com. It's an award winning blog which she began as a young professional, highlighting the ups and downs of her personal finance journey. Her site is featured on Huffington Post, Forbes, Mint.com, CNN Money, Kiplinger, and many, many, many other sites. She's also the founder of a content marketing consultancy called 'Beehive Content' and, this is really cool, she hosts a web series and popular Internet talk show called 'Awkward Money Chat' which won the Plutus Award in October 2014. Lauren's personal finance story started in college when she got her first credit card, yup, and racked up $10,000 in debt just like a lot of us in just a short span of time. After graduating with a degree in theatre, she moved to New York of course to pursue her big dream of acting. She had only $300 in her pocket, and she talks about what happens after that. She ended up working on Wall Street of all places, but it all led to her path today. And we're very happy that she has arrived at lbandthemoneytree.com.

    122: Todd Tresidder, Founder of FinancialMentor.com May 13, 2015
    Show notes

Very excited to introduce our guest today. His name is Todd Tresidder. He is our second guest on So Money to retire in just his 30's. The first one was Mr. Money Moustache, a wildly popular episode. Check it out, episode 38. Todd is a former investment hedge fund manager, turned financial blogger and money couch. He went from debt to financial freedom in 12 years, and then supported his family just from assets without any significant earned income for years. He raised his net worth from less than zero in his 20's, to millions a decade later using the same personal finance and investment strategies that he shares on his website, financialmentor.com. Todd is still an active investor today. He earns a consistent investment return in both up and down markets. He is a true lifestyle entrepreneur, and as he says, the classic millionaire next door. He doesn't drive flashy cars or wear expensive clothing, but he does take great, great vacations. We're gonna talk about that. Also, we're gonna talk about why he recommends not hiring a financial advisor, his philosophy that we should make decisions emotionally but support them rationally, and (this is great) his step-by-step advice for first time investors. A lot of you writing in wanting to know how to get started with the stock market, how to invest wisely, and Todd has some really important takeaways for us.

    Show notes

Today we're going to talk to a woman who will help us learn how to make some serious money on the side. She is the queen of side hustles, her name is Crystal Hammond. She's a former day trader. Today she's a real estate pro, she is a landlord of multiple properties, and she's also, by the way, an engineer with the US Patent and Trademark Office. So she's very busy during her 9 to 5, but she still finds time to make room for all these side incomes. And she's gonna talk about what they are, how she finds time for them, how you can also do the same. And she blogs about all of this at sophisticatedspender.com. She's also a big advocate of spending smart. She talks about the good, the bad, and the ugly as it pertains to her. She really is out there exposing herself, and that's why we love her.

    Show notes

Do you remember watching The Apprentice when it first aired? I'm not talking Celebrity Apprentice, but you know, the very first Apprentice that kicked off. I think it was 10, 11 years ago. It was an epic debut. Do you remember that first season? It was the one with Omarosa. Yeah! It was the number one new show of 2004, according to Wikipedia, and I'm excited to say that we have the winner of that first season joining us on So Money today. Bill Rancic, a former cigar business owner turned Donald Trump apprentice, turned mega entrepreneur, is here to share some of his personal financial insights and ideas with us. And Bill is busier than ever. He is one of the most sought-after motivational speakers on the subject of entrepreneurship and business. He shares his entertaining lessons that vary from a pancake business he started with his grandmother at age 10, all the way to his multi-million dollar real estate enterprise in Chicago. He's also a restaurateur. He is also highly engaged in charitable activities, and Bill is about to complete his second trip to Haiti building homes for victims of the earthquake.

116: Dr. Brad Klontz, Financial Psychologist May 07, 2015
    Show notes

Our guest today explains it all as his profession, Dr. Brad Klontz is an award-winning Financial Psychologist and a Certified Financial Planner. He works as an associate professor of Personal Financial Planning at Kansas State University, and a partner of Occidental Asset Management, LLC. It's a fee-only investment advisory firm in Northern California. And I have known Brad for several years as I've been working in this field of money, and personal finance, and psychology of money, and when I was writing "When She Makes More", I called Brad and I said, "I'd love to interview you extensively for this book, because I think you're just a wealth of knowledge". And he said, "Hey, why don't we do a survey together?" And the survey was born, you know, months later and it was just an honor to work with him because this is his expertise. You know, really finding out what motivates people when it comes to their money? Why we do the things that we do? And it's all psychological. I mean, it's never about the money right? And so he has a lot of interesting insights and stories. And his story, his own story, is very, very interesting as well. We're gonna get to all of this during the show. Just a little bit more about Brad. He is also the co-founder of Your Mental Wealth and the Financial Psychology Institute. He's co-authored five books on the psychology of money, and he received the Innovative Practice Presidential Award from the American Psychological Association. His work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, among many other places. Several takeaways from our time with Brad: One, why we dislike rich people. You're gonna wanna hear that. Advice for couples that fail to see eye-to-eye over money, selling everything to invest in text stocks - something he did early on in his life, and of course he regrets it now. And the one investment, that he says, saved his marriage..

115: Simon Cunningham, Founder of LendingMemo Media May 06, 2015
    Show notes

Today's guest is the founder and CEO of LendingMemo Media. His name is Simon Cunningham, and he runs the Seattle-based company that promotes peer to peer lending education. If you're not familiar with P2P lending, it is exactly what it sounds like. It's the practice of lending money to unrelated individuals, or peers, without going through a traditional financial institution or a bank. In other words, people are able to sidestep the banks to lend and borrow directly to one another. And P2P lending typically offers more attractive terms if you are a borrower than a traditional unsecured loan or credit card. And can be a godsend if you've got multiple high-interest debts and need to consolidate. Peer to peer lending is a full-fledged fast growing business and part of a whopping $3 trillion consumer debt market. And Simon is really at the crossroads of all of this, offering consumers a website to really engage, understand, to learn more about this so that they can make educated choices if they choose to enter this market. A few takeaways from our interview with Simon: How he made a 10% annual rate of return on his P2P investments, key benefits and risks to this sort of investment for both borrowers and lenders, and the downsides to the frugality movement according to Simon.
