    Show notes

Happy Friday everyone. I'm doing a new thing starting this Friday and every Friday until the end of the summer. I've decided, just decided the other day, that I'm gonna air re-runs. You know, summer Fridays tend to be quieter than the other days, and I see it in my download numbers. I don't get as many people listening in on Fridays. Also, it's hard to get guests over the summer. So I'm at a point now where it's a lot easier for me to just air re-runs on Fridays. I hope this isn't gonna be too much of a problem for listeners. I mean I have already listeners telling me to slow down a little bit, and this is a way that's helping me but also addressing I think the demand out there. I can tell, you guys have other things to do on Fridays. And those of you that are tuning in, thank you! I appreciate you. But for now until the end of the summer, let's just dedicate Fridays to some oldies but goodies. And today we're gonna kick it off with the great David Bach. David, as you may know, is famous for his FinishRich books including Start Late, Finish Rich and Smart Women Finish Rich. One of my personal favorite books of David’s is The Automatic Millionaire. We talk about David a little bit actually in yesterday's show with James Altucher when he is trying to convince me that 401(k)'s are thumbs down, no good and I took him to task, but mentioned David Bach's input as well there. David is also an internationally renowned motivational and financial speaker. He's a regularly featured financial expert in the media, you've seen him everywhere! He's been on the Oprah Winfrey show six times. He's been a regular contributor to The Today Show. I've been next to David many times on The Today Show, very privileged to say that I've had that opportunity.

    191: Steve Chou, Founder of MyWifeQuitHerJob.com Jul 21, 2015
    Show notes

Back in 2007 our guest today Steve Chou and his wife Jennifer found themselves in a position that many couples face. Jennifer found out that she was pregnant, and with their growing family came greater financial concerns. Neither Steve nor Jennifer were happy with their jobs, and were stuck in a routine of complacency: drag yourself out of bed, go to work, come home, watch television, go to sleep, repeat. But with the news of the baby Steve became motivated to take charge of his life and provide better financial security for his family – especially knowing his wife wanted to quit her job to become a stay at home mom. He and Jennifer had to find a way to replace her six-figure income; thus they created Bumblebee Linens, an online store for linens for special occasions. The success of the business allowed Jennifer to stay at home while still providing for her family, while Steve kept his day job. He started mywifequitherjob.com to share his experiences and help other families deal with the same challenges. He also has a podcast of the same name, and an e-commerce course on how to create a profitable online store. Steve is a graduate of Stanford University with bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering, and currently works for a startup company in Silicon Valley.Three key takeaways:How he advances his business by devoting one day per week to planning for the future. The business idea that he and his wife fell upon as they were about to get married.Finding his audience and clients for his new online course.

Knowing how much to put aside for the future, emergencies or anything else for that matter can be challenging. How much can you afford to save? How much do you need to reach your goal? What if there was only an app that could figure all of that for you and actually save on your behalf?Introducing: Ethan Bloch, the founder and CEO of Digit: Automated Savings, an automated savings tool with text-enabled communication. The app connects to your checking account, which allows Digit to analyze your income and spending habits to find small amounts to save for you. Those amounts increase (or decrease) based on your lifestyle. And you can easily, and with NO FEE, withdraw money from the Digit savings account via text whenever needed. Since its launch, Digit has saved an overall $20 million for users.Ethan has had over a decade of experience in finance, and his last company, Flowtown, was acquired by Demandforce (Intuit) in 2011. He says that he as been “obsessed with personal finance” since he was 13, and has spent his career doing just that. With Digit he provides a solution for modern problems in personal finance.Three takeaways from our interview:Why Ethan says the big banks can’t compete with Digit. How the app determines how much to save on your behalf. What if your income's sporadic? The sore lesson Ethan learned after investing his bar mitzvah money.

187: Paula Pant, Blogger of Afford Anything Jul 17, 2015
    Show notes

Many of you have requested my guest today to be on So Money, so I’m very excited to finally have her here: Paula Pant of the blog and movement Afford Anything. She is a self-proclaimed globetrotter, entrepreneur and investor. She has traveled to 33 countries and owns seven rental properties – wow, can I come visit? But above all, Paula is her own boss and lives on her own terms, which sounds pretty great to me. Her belief is that money can fuel your dreams and that it’s about growing your wealth, not pinching pennies. Her blog Afford Anything is part of a larger movement to allow people to ditch the 9-5 lifestyle and master their money to embark on their dreams. For Paula her dream was to travel …and as a newspaper editor and reporter she found her work exhilarating but it wasn’t enough. She wasn’t pursing her dreams. She quit her job eventually to travel the world…and from that experience AffordAnything.com was born.
