582: Alice Finn, "Smart Women Love Money Author" Jun 05, 2017
    Show notes

We've talked about this a lot on the show before. There's the gender wage gap but there's also the gender investment gap. I've talked about this at length with Ellevest's founder Sallie Krawcheck. Our guest today is also addressing this in her new book, Smart Women Love Money: 5 Simple Life-Changing Rules of Investing. Alice Finn is with us today. In the book she provides the tools women (and men) need to achieve long-term success no matter how the markets are fluctuating.

More about Alice... she's the CEO of PowerHouse Assets LLC. It's a firm she founded to hep women become more engaged when it comes to their finances.

580: John Kapetaneas, Journalist who paid off $100K of debt in 2yrs May 31, 2017
    Show notes

Our guest today has been dubbed The Student Loan Assassin, paying off over $90,000 in loans plus another $10,000 in credit card debt in just 24 months. The total damage? $111,354.33.

We don't cover debt as much as we do earning, saving and retiring early on this show but the fact is many Americans are saddled with a combination of student loans and mounting credit card debt. You struggle to make the right trade-offs. You're discouraged by the totality of the debt, not sure you'll ever see an end to it.

John Kapetaneas is here to offer us some inspiration and his own plan of action for eliminating debt in a short period of time. By day - and probably by night because journalists don't sleep - he is a producer and writer for ABC News covering all sorts of human interest stories. In the process, he's sharing his own courageous story of becoming financially free.

579: Jo Piazza, Author of "How to Be Married" May 29, 2017
    Show notes

A new topic for us today. We're talking about marriage. I'm obsessed with this topic. I wrote a book, When She Make More, about female breadwinners in modern day relationships. When you think about marital advice in this country, it typically centers around pre-marital advice and then advice on how to deal with divorce.

But what about the years in between?

Marriage is wonderful but it's also hard, and the more prepared you and your partner can be for the challenges - from your money differences to raising children to taking care of aging parents - the less likely it is that you'll need to read that article about how to survive your divorce, right?

Our guest today is Jo Piazza, a prolific writer and author whose recent book is part-memoir, part-investigation on the topic of marriage. The book is called: How to Be Married: What I Learned from Real Women on Five Continents About Surviving My First (Really Hard) Year of Marriage. In the book, Jo shares a framework to help the rest of us keep our marriages strong, from your engagement into the newlywed years and beyond.

More about Jo: She's an award-winning journalist who's written for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, New York Daily News, New York Magazine, Elle and many others. Her novel, Knockoff, became an international bestseller and she's also the author of the critically acclaimed If Nuns Ruled the World and Celebrity Inc. How Famous People Make Money.

    577: Mia Saini Duchnowski, Oars + Alps Co-Founder May 24, 2017
    Show notes

A couple months back I purchased a gift for my husband through this company Oars + Alps, a men's athleisure and natural grooming brand. The brand is being called the "Warby Parker of men's grooming," and was created after the founders won the regional 2016 Harvard Business School New Venture Challenge and spent a year in research and development. All the while, the brainchild behind this product was none other than my old colleague Mia Saini Duchnowski. She, along with Laura Lisowski, is the company's founder, and our guest on So Money today.

I worked with Mia back in the day at TheStreet.com. We sat across from each other during the market's demise. She was an intern and was contemplating leaving Harvard Business School to pursue being a financial correspondent. She made the transition and went on to be a very successful reporter and anchor at Bloomberg TV covering the global financial markets. She's pivoted since, launching into the world of entrepreneurship. The idea for Oars + Alps grew out of a personal necessity; both Mia and her co-founder's husbands needed better products to help with sensitive skin.

576: Mike Nugent, Former NFL Player May 22, 2017
    Show notes

Today's episode is a treat to anyone who follows pro football. A couple months ago I received an email from NFL player Mike Nugent saying he was a fan of the podcast and he had some money questions for me, as a new dad. I was totally blown away and excited, so much so that I asked if he'd come on So Money today to share more of what it's like to manage money as a pro athlete and to share some of the behind-the-scenes of the role of money in the professional sports world. Seriously, why do so many athletes lose their financial grip?

Mike been a placekicker in the NFL for 12 years. He's played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals and most recently just finished playing with the Cincinnati Bengals. Mike is a two time All American in football and played in the 2002 National Championship team. When we recorded this episode he was still a free agent, so I was curious to ask how that is impacting his financial planning.

574: Wendy Sachs, "Fearless and Free" Author May 17, 2017
    Show notes

If you’re on the cusp of making a transition in your career or dream of one day making a shift, but aren’t sure how to make the most of it, today's guest is full of priceless advice. Wendy Sachs is the author of the new book Fearless and Free: How Smart Women Pivot and Relaunch their Careers and my O, The Oprah Magazine family calls this a "title to pick up now." We are living in an era of professional reinvention and women, in particular, Wendy says, are seeking new ways to stay relevant, be fulfilled and make an impact. How can we transition without trepidation? How to traverse the roadblocks and dance with the fears we harbor about failure?

Wendy is also an Emmy-award winning TV news producer. She's worked on NBC's Dateline, Fox and CNN. She was also a Capitol Hill press secretary and PR executive. Stay tuned as Wendy speaks from her own personal experiences, pivoting so much in her career she jokes she’s constantly pirouetting…sometimes out of choice, other times out of necessity. She’s been fired twice and is constantly working on her ability to thrive financially in an evolving media industry.
