So it's a show?: keeping up with the Gilmore Girls

Latest Episodes:

ep 143: Finale - His Girl Friday Dec 20, 2024

Show notes

For 8 years, you've led where we've followed, and we've loved every minute—well, almost every minute! Before we kick off our final discussion of a Gilmore Girls pop culture reference, we take a look back at our favorite references and guests, as well as a few that surprised us and few we're happy we won't ever need to revisit. Then we dig into His Girl Friday, the classic screwball romantic comedy that served as an inspiration for our favorite series. How many versions of the story have been made? How did its dialogue inspire Amy Sherman-Palladino? And most importantly...can Kyla finally name all of the Beatles?

More pop culture we ref: Broadcast News; Valley of the Dolls; Funny Girl; Grey Gardens; Gilligan's Island; That Girl; Xanadu; Swept Away; A Star Is Born; How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days; Bringing Up Baby; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Electra Woman and Dyna Girl; Pippi Longstocking; Gaslight

ep 142: I can't meet Christiane Amanpour in my pajamas Aug 16, 2024

Show notes

In our (probably) penultimate episode, we turn into correspondents on a topic we've wanted to investigate for years: Christiane Amanpour. And to do this research, we go to the most important primary sources we could find: sub-par Hollywood sequels! What inspired Amanpour to become a journalist? Is she a good role model for Rory? And what did she think of the Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix?

We Wholeheartedly Recommend: Trap, Azul board game

More pop culture we ref: Broadcast News; The Wizard of Oz; Good Night, and Good Luck; Pink Panther 2; Iron Man 2; Zoolander 2; The Simpsons; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; Elizabeth Holmes; Taylor Swift; Anna Wintour; Oprah

ep 141: Maybe Sylvia Plath wasn't crazy, she was just cold? Jul 19, 2024

Show notes

In this episode, we're taking on a listener request! We're reading the works of (but mostly watching a movie about) Sylvia Plath. What is the tragedy that Rory and Lorelai allude to? Is Gwyneth Paltrow any good at playing this poet in a movie? And why does Rory love her work so much? No need to finish that copy of The Bell Jar that's been sitting half-read on your nightstand for years—we've got all the answers here!

We Wholeheartedly Recommend: Inside Out 2 (Taylor's review), audiobooks!

More pop culture we ref: The Crown, Goop, Harry Potter, Knives Out, Twilight, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

ep 140: My little Holly Hunter in Broadcast News Jun 14, 2024

Show notes

What's a girl to do when she has no time to write a valedictorian speech? And what's a girl to do when she has to choose between two terrible love interests while working in the world of TV journalism? We're digging into the '80s romantic dramedy Broadcast News and trying to figure out what the hey it has to do with Rory's graduation. Why is Lorelai comparing Rory to Holly Hunter? What ethical controversy (if you can even call it that) could make Holly Hunter break up with a dreamy news anchor? And how much do we love The Incredibles? Our 140th episode has a special report on all of these stories.

We Wholeheartedly Recommend: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power; Murder, She Wrote

Other pop culture we ref: All the President's Men, Network, Mary Tyler Moore, Elsa Klensch, The Simpsons, Working Girl, John F. Kennedy, The Incredibles, Kim Possible, Barbie

Show notes

Sorry if you thought we had a deep Rory and Lorelai thing—because we totally do! We're holding hands as we drive straight into our newest pop culture ref, the 1991 crime classic Thelma & Louise. What does this movie have to say about female friendships? What did we think of THAT ending? And is Rory totally a Thelma?

We Wholeheartedly Recommend: The Sound of Music Sing-Along, Persuasion by Jane Austen

Other pop culture we ref: Hart to Hart, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Happy Gilmore, Alien, Holes

ep 138: Do you remember in The Way We Were...? May 17, 2024

Show notes

Because Barbra is queen! In the first pop culture ref of our final season, we finally watch and discuss The Way We Were. This '70s weepy features a Palladino-esque heroine, Robert Redford in a cable knit sweater, heartache, laugher, and Communism all in one neat package! We discuss the cultural changes in parenting since the 1970s, why the Gilmores reference this movie several times in the series, and, yes, Robert Redford in that cable knit sweater.
