Count Rumford's Substitute for Tea & Coffee Sep 16, 2024
    Show notes

Tonight, we’ll read an excerpt from 1892’s “The Chemistry of Cookery” by W. Mattieu Williams that we titled Count Rumford’s Substitute for Tea and Coffee. Snoozecast first read this excerpt back in 2020.

Benjamin Thompson, also known as Count Rumford, was an interesting fellow. Born in Massachusetts in 1753, he charmed and married an heiress from Concord, New Hampshire, then called Rumford, NH. He was a British loyalist when the American Revolutionary War began. When a rebel mob attacked his house, he abandoned his house and family to join the British side of the war and conducted experiments on gunpowder. Then he moved to Bavaria, and among other things applied his scientific skills to establishing workhouses for the poor and inventing the method of cooking called Sous Vide. For his efforts in science and society his awarded the title of Count. He chose the name Rumford for the town he was married in some twenty years earlier.

    Show notes

Tonight, we’ll read part one of the story “Tears of Gold” found in “Folk-Tales of the Khasis” which was compiled by Mrs. Rafy and published in 1920. The original story in the book is titled “The Blessing of the Mendicant”. We first read this back in 2020. The second half of this story will air next week. The Khasi people are an indigenous ethnic tribe from India. This person is often a monk or otherwise part of a religious order.

The Magic Carpet Sep 09, 2024
    Show notes

Tonight, we’ll read the short story "The Magic Carpet" from the compilation called "The Day Before Yesterday" by Richard Middleton, published posthumously in 1912. We first read this story back in 2020.

Middleton was a tragic figure- a young man impatient for success, who managed to live the archetypal life of the Romantic Bohemian poet, complete with poverty, unrequited love for an impossible woman, and an early, tragic death. No novels were published while he was alive. Soon after his death, the literary world discovered him. Critical acclaim followed for the brilliance of his work, and the brevity of his life.

Four volumes of his collected works were published, including this one. If you enjoy this story, and also enjoy mild-mannered ghost stories, be sure to listen to “The Ghost Ship” written by the same author. Just search in your podcast app for “Snoozecast Presents: Spooky Stories”, or go to snoozecast.com/series.

But just to reassure our more delicate listeners, this story, “The Magic Carpet”, is in no way spooky. It is about a young boy who uses his imagination to embark on whimsical adventures.

    Prince Darling Sep 04, 2024
    Show notes

Tonight, we’ll read “Prince Darling”, a French fairy tale credited to Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Snoozecast first read this story back in the year 2020.

This author also wrote the best-known version of the story “Beauty and the Beast”. Her third husband was the French spy Thomas Pichon.

As a long-time educator, she became well known for her written works on behavior and instructional teaching for young women. Her interest in the genre of education contributed to her inclusion of fairy tales to teach moral behavior. She was one of the first writers to utilize folk tales as moralist and educational tools.

Within many of her other works, Leprince de Beaumont discussed reform for the roles of women in society. She urged women to become active political participants by providing them with literary instruction on how to become instrumental citizens.

History of Bread Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

Tonight, we’ll read about the history of bread-making in Europe and America, from “The History of Bread”, written by John Ashton and published in 1905. Snoozecast first aired this story back in 2020.

The text mentions windmills, which in the past were structures built to harness wind power to perform strenuous tasks, specifically they were well know for milling grain. But one of the earliest working windmill designs was found in Ancient Persia and used to both pump water and grind grain.

Windmills were adopted throughout late medieval and early modern European times. At their peak, Europe contained an estimated 200,000 windmills in the year 1850. With the Industrial Revolution, they were eventually replaced by steam mills and internal combustion engines.

    Centerfield Aug 26, 2024
    Show notes

Tonight, for our 901st episode, we’ll read a Snoozecast original titled “Centerfield”. In this story, the neighborhood boys play pickup ball games during the dog days of summer. Cole Brooks spends most of his time in centerfield daydreaming. A shift occurs when new slugger, Rolo Flores, wakes up the outfield with action at every play. In this story, Rolo hits a

dinger far beyond the boundaries of the field, launching a mysterious adventure.

A pick-up game is one spontaneously started. Unlike exhibition games, there is no sense of obligation or commitment to play. Pick-up games usually lack officials and referees, which makes them more disorganized and less structured than regular games. Without formal rules and regulations, pick-up games are often played with a less rigid set of rules.
