Why Students Should Clean Up Their Social Media Profiles (with Andrew Selepak, Social Media Professor at the University of Florida) Oct 08, 2020
    Show notes

Selepak's Tips for Cleaning Up Social Media Profiles:

The best way for students to clean up and protect their online presence is to do a regular social media audit. Students should reexamine their Instagram posts, go back through their Twitter posts with Advanced Search, check their TikTok videos, and review their daily Facebook Memories notifications for posts that no longer accurately reflect their reputation or could damage their reputation.

Too often we make posts when we are emotional that doesn’t accurately reflect our true views or at least our more articulate and subdued views, or posts we made when we were younger that embarrass us today. While it is always important to pause before making a social media post that might be made in anger or despair, it is just as important to pause and review any old posts that were made under similar emotional distress, or made without thinking.

Parents and educators should also remind students that posts made today for likes, comments, and follows, could be the same posts that tomorrow prevent a student from getting a job, internship, or letter of recommendation.

About our guest: Andrew Selepak is the Program Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Mass Communication Program with a specialization in Social Media at the University of Florida in the College of Journalism and Communications. He also teaches courses in the Department of Telecommunication at the University of Florida. Andrew holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia in American History, a M.A. from George Mason University in Communications, and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Mass Communications.

Grant Writing Tips for Educators with Guest, Meredith Noble Oct 06, 2020
    Show notes

Noble's first tip? Don’t shotgun your proposal.

Start by finding the top 100 grants you may be interested in. From there, narrow it down to the top 20 worth spending time looking at and then hone in on 2-5 grants you’ll apply for.

Be strategic with your time and with your proposal to make something worth reading.

Find out in this episode what question to ask the funder so you know whether or not to pursue it.

Be clear on the problem you want to solve if you were to win the grant.

Listen in for a bonus tip and a helpful resource called Instrumentl.com to make this process even easier.

Talking With Kids About Advertising with Guest Suzanne Tomlinson Sep 30, 2020
    Show notes

These 3 tips can help your child see ads through a critical lens:

    1. Explain advertising, in general, using examples your child encounters the most, whether that’s TV commercials or pop-up ads in their favorite app. Advertisers want us to buy their stuff, so they try different methods to make us want what they’re selling. Advertisers track the digital places we visit online to show us things they know we’re interested in.

    2. Teach your child how to look for words in posts and images like “ad”, “sponsored content”, “hide”, or even a small X in a corner. Demonstrate how to properly close a pop-up or video ad by clicking or tapping close or on the X. These types of ads can be distracting, at the very least, to both kids and adults.

    3. Sometimes ads can take a viewer to an unsafe website. Use an analogy like “stranger danger” to help your kids understand they don’t have to click on or follow something just because it’s there, even if it looks nice.

Wink App Connects Kids to Strangers (App Guide for Parents, Students, and Educators) Sep 29, 2020
    Show notes

The Wink app connects users with strangers. Users find new “friends” by swiping through profiles, like the popular adult dating app, Tinder. Once on a profile, they can swipe right to connect with the person or swipe left to move on to the next profile. Users can click a button to add new Wink friends to their Snapchat, or can they chat directly on Wink. Users must be at least 13 with parental permission to use Wink, according to the Terms of Service. However, there is no age verification so kids could easily set their age to over 18 and adults could easily pose as teens to connect with young users.

Practical and Tactical Online Tips for Teen on the Autism Spectrum with Guest Michael Uram Sep 16, 2020
    Show notes

It can be very scary as a parent to see your neurodiverse child go online where there are plenty of dangers to worry about. As a parent, Uram shares your concern. As a therapist, he can tell you that there are plenty more reasons to help your child navigate the online environment in a healthy way rather than restrict them from doing so. He has blended his different roles together with the latest research and has developed a few tips that may help you in navigating the internet for your child.

Celebrate your child’s strengths more than you help them improve their challenging behaviors. Watch out for scams that they may not see coming. Play online games with your child, whether they are neurodiverse or not. Educate your child with Autism on how people troll each other. Encourage them to get involved in GPS and AR-based mobile games that interest them.

In summary, find the ways that the internet can work for you and your teenage neurodiverse child rather than only try to scare them away from the dangers.

Michael Uram is the CEO of Uram Family Therapy & Owner of Wundt Digital Therapeutics
