Parent Compass: How Failure is a Good Experience for Kids with Guest Jessica Lahey Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

Jessica talks about the damaging effects of "outcome love"--the kind of love that shows up when kids have accomplished something. She encourages parents instead to focus on the long haul--on the learning and the growth that kids experience throughout their childhood and adolescence. She gives great advice on developing positive relationships with teachers, expressing gratitude, and even the benefits of quitting. About our guest: Jessica is an educator, speaker, and writer. She has been an English, Latin, and writing teacher in middle and high school for more than a decade and writes the biweekly “Parent-Teacher Conference” advice column for the NYT, is a contributing writer at the Atlantic, and appears as a commentator on Vermont Public Radio. About our co-hosts: Jenn Curtis, MSW, Educational Consultant, author, and speaker, owner of FutureWise Consulting. Cindy Muchnick, MA, Educational Consultant, author, and speaker. Minecraft (Based in Sweden, Developed by Mojang Studios, Owned by Microsoft)

    Apple App Store Rating: 9+

    Google Play: 10+

Minecraft gameplay involves players interacting with the game world by placing and breaking various types of blocks in a 3D environment. Users can build creative structures, creations, and artwork on multiplayer servers and single player worlds across multiple game modes. While Minecraft may be used for educational purposes, players can encounter bullying, inappropriate chats and other content, and even viruses when downloading 3rd party add-ons for this game. Police have warned that predators can prey on and groom children in online video games, like Minecraft, if kids are playing the public/online version without parental supervision. Parent Compass: The Power of Listening to Your Teen with Author Kelly Corrigan Jan 04, 2021
    Show notes

Kelly talks about really listening to our kids and the importance of doing so without the goal of fixing. While it is soothing for us, she says, to solve problems for our kids, it is ten times more soothing to know that they can problem-solve for themselves. Truly listening allows parents to get to "the thing behind the thing behind the thing"--what kids are really trying to convey.

Kelly tackles the power of saying "no," and reflects on how developing this skill has added so much freedom to her life, and she gets candid about looking back on the way she was raised to inform her own parenting. She delivers her musings, observations, and wisdom with humility, humor, and a great talent for relatability.

    About our guest:
Kelly Corrigan is the author of four New York Times bestselling memoirs, earning her the title of “The Poet Laureate of the ordinary” from the Huffington Post and the “voice of a generation” from O Magazine. She is curious and funny and eager to go well past the superficial in every conversation. She also has a new PBS TV show called Tell Me More and a podcast, Kelly Corrigan Wonders: https://www.kellycorrigan.com/podcast
