Ep. 125: Learning About AAC - It Doesn’t Have to be So Hard (+AAC tips) May 19, 2022

In this episode, Sarah and Sarie discussed different masking rules in Sarie’s setting (schools) versus Sarah’s Setting (clinic) and the confusion and conflict that has invited for families they see. Tips discussed in this episode:
By completing a thorough speech sample, we learn more about how and when (and if!) a student is using the /r/ sound
Completing a /r/ probe before we work on production will also make /r/ articulation speech therapy sessions be a lot less frustrating and more productive
Use consistent terms with your students when describing the /r/ sound (“lip sound” “tongue sound” and a “strong /r/” are some of my favorites)
Get your students lips out of the way by asking them to smile or by using some of the tips above
Practice discrimination and see if your student can discriminate your productions as well as their own productions, either as old way /r/ sounds or strong /r/ sounds
Working on the /r/ sound is one of the trickiest sounds to work on in speech therapy. Remember to give it time. If it’s taking time, chances are - you are doing it right, it’s just going to take longer than you think it will.

Ep. 11: Are the clients you work with ready to work with YOU? Jun 07, 2018

This episode, we talk about working weekends. Do you do it? Do you feel like it helps or hurts you? We’ll share what we do, and feel free to chime in on the conversation.
We also answer a listener question - what do you say when people ask you what you do for a living? If you are an SLP, you are used to blank stares or odd comments when you tell people what you do for a living. Sarah and Sarie share the strangest things they’ve been asked at parties after revealing they are SLPs, and you are going to want to hear these stories.
The bulk of this episode discusses client success factors. Do you work with a variety of clients? Do some clients seem to have a bad attitude or get upset easily? Do you have other clients who seem interested in getting service and then seem to disappear, never to be seen again? Well, you might be ready for your clients - but you need to be able to answer the question - are your clients ready to work with you? The discussion is based on the research of Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983; Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross 1992.
We’ll also propose a self care challenge that’ll get you knowing your clients even better, and using your time even more effectively in your speech room.

Ep. 9: Take A Break, Sharing Difficult News & a Trick to Flip Your Perspective May 10, 2018

This episode answers a listener question:
The job of being an SLP is so busy and I feel like there is always more to do. How do you know when you just need to keep your nose to the grindstone and hustle away at the work, and when it’s time to stop, step away, and take a break?
If you find yourself powering through a season of overwork or deadlines, this is the episode for you. Sarah shares how powering through is sometimes helpful and when she’s had to do it. Sarie shares that powering through is the name of the game for a lot of the CF year. The discussion then moves along to how to have more boundaries and time and when it’s time to not hustle.
