31: Let’s Chat Research Behind COVID and Teletherapy Aug 31, 2020
    Show notes

The last six months of COVID have been a real rollercoaster ride, right? Most of us have needed to adapt our lives and work to fit the requirements of a school shutdown or remote work. We quickly learned how to use teletherapy to meet with our speech students and still be as effective as possible.

So, what does the industry research say about teletherapy and the trends we have seen because of COVID? In this episode, I’m excited to dive into the research with Meredith Harold from The Informed SLP. She’ll fill us in on what studies show about teletherapy and COVID in general.*

After listening in, I hope you feel a sense that everything will work out and be okay. The future may still have some surprises for us SLPs, but we are equipped with the skills necessary to help our students succeed.

*Disclaimer: This interview was recorded early summer 2020 before any plans for the 2020-2021 school year were announced.

30: The Journey of an SLP-A and Children’s Book Author Aug 24, 2020
    Show notes

Are you interested in the field of speech pathology and the options of becoming a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant or a traveling SLP? Have you ever wanted to write a book but aren’t sure how to fit that goal into your already busy career as an SLP?

If you are looking into either area, then you will really enjoy my conversation with my guest in this episode - Jayah Washington. Jayah has a wealth of knowledge to share with us about her journey as a traveling SLP-A and as a children’s book author.

Jayah Washington is a licensed Traveling Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. After traveling around the country she noticed the lack of diversity in children’s books in the public schools. In October 2018, Jayah self-published her first children’s book and will be attending graduate school this fall for Speech-Language Pathology.

After listening to my conversation with Jayah, I hope that you recognize the broader opportunities that are available in the speech pathology profession. There are many other ways to work in the field outside of a school setting. You will love your career the most if you find the area that works best for you.

28: Let's Try Using Intrinsic Motivation with Jessie Ginsburg Aug 10, 2020
    Show notes

Do you ever feel like you are struggling to find ways to motivate your students? We all have our “go-to” reward systems, such as the treasure chest or token bag. But, what if you could find ways to intrinsically motivate your speech students - especially students who are on the autism spectrum?

I'm so excited to chat with my guest in this episode - Jessie Ginsburg. Jessie inspires a new way of thinking about the SLP's role in working with young children with autism through her national publications, talks, and her top-ranked multidisciplinary clinic in Los Angeles.

Today, Jessie shares with us how she fosters intrinsic motivation in her students by being flexible in her therapy sessions and allowing the student to have more control.

After listening to Jessie's tips, I hope that you will feel inspired to put away the reward box and allow your students to guide you in what motivates them. A simple shift in our thought process as the SLP may help create great results.

    27: Let’s Chat Aural Rehab Aug 03, 2020
    Show notes

Many of your SLP students will struggle with auditory challenges and hearing loss that impact their ability to communicate.

For these students, you will need to make accommodations in your therapy sessions for those challenges to help them make progress.

Luckily my guest in this episode, Fara Augustover, has a specialty in auditory oral therapy for individuals with hearing loss, auditory processing disorder, and other listening challenges.

Fara is a Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and the founder of Island Wide Speech. In this week’s episode she shares tips for working with students with hearing loss and how to help determine if your student is struggling with an articulation concern or a hearing challenge.

I hope that after hearing my conversation with Fara you feel ready to dive in with your students with hearing challenges. Plus, who else is going to RUN to the store to get an acoustic hoop? Let us know how it works out in your therapy sessions.

26: Incorporating Curriculum Verbs into Speech Therapy Jul 27, 2020
    Show notes

There’s SO MUCH curriculum for students to master in class, and it is imperative that speech sessions continue that learning when possible. When I was introduced to the work of Cathy Alexander, I was blown away by her knowledge of grade-level curriculum, and I’m sure you will be too.

Cathy Alexander has been a speech pathologist for over 25 years working in public schools and private pediatric clinics. She is an international speaker on the subject of vocabulary and the author of Core Curriculum Articulation - S, R, L, and the WH Question Blast Off Board Game.

Grab a notebook and pen for this episode and let Cathy teach you how she incorporates the curriculum vocabulary - particularly verbs- into her speech sessions.
