    43: Breaking Down Cultural Responsiveness...SLP Style Nov 23, 2020
    Show notes

As SLPs, it is our primary goal to support our students and help facilitate their growth and success. One important way that we can do that which is especially relevant today is by being culturally responsive. It is important that we see, appreciate, and support the cultural differences of our students in a positive way.

Today, I’m so thrilled to chat with Jordyn Carroll who is an SLP that specializes in cultural responsiveness.

Jordyn is a school-based speech-language pathologist in Washington, D.C. She specializes in culturally responsive therapy and child language development. Jordyn emphasizes the importance of being the person you needed when you were younger. She creates products and materials with the intention of serving as representation both in and outside the field of speech-language pathology.

If you’ve been worried about how to be more culturally responsive with your students, I hope my interview with Jordyn has shown you the importance of starting where you are at and making small improvements. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our students.

38: Thinking About Social Thinking Virtually Oct 19, 2020
    Show notes

In school, we focus so much on the academic learning part of the process for our students. However, an important piece that we should also remember is social thinking.

As SLPs, how can you support your students with their social skills and behaviors? In this episode, I am so excited to bring you solutions for just that through my interview with Ryan Hendrix.

Ryan is a senior therapist at Social Thinking Stevens Creek in San Jose and a private therapist in San Francisco. Her diverse clinical experience includes preschool-age children to young adults with varying levels of social cognitive learning challenges.

Ryan truly enjoys sharing this information with families and professionals in small settings, conferences, and ongoing collaboration with schools. She brings the concepts, frameworks and strategies of the Social Thinking methodology to life through stories and humor.

Ryan is so knowledgeable! You are sure to come away with a TON of ways to help your students relate socially and interact with each other more effectively.

36: Tips for General Ed Teachers - Always Fun with a Teacher’s Point of View Oct 05, 2020
    Show notes

Have you ever wanted to get the view from a general education teacher on how SLPs and other special service providers in the school can support them? Me too. It’s always a good idea to bring the two groups together so you can work as a team.

In this episode, we are lucky enough to get a fresh perspective from my first guest that is NOT an SLP or special educator, Gretchen Bridgers from Always a Lesson.

Gretchen is a general education teacher of 8 years and was a Teacher of the Year runner-up two years in a row. With years of mentoring new teachers, providing professional development to school building staff, and speaking nationally at conferences and in-services, Gretchen has now invested her time solely to consulting individual teachers and school staff.

I hope you are excited about this opportunity to hear from a teacher’s perspective. I know I am! It’s a great reminder to chat with the general education teachers you work with more often to find out how you can best support each other.

34: Keeping Older Students Motivated During Distance Learning (SLP Connect Podconference) Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

I have been lucky enough to work as an SLP with older elementary age (grades 5 and 6) students for many years now. Much of the work I have done with speechtimefun.com was developed while working with these amazing older students.

In this episode that is a part of the 2nd Annual SLP Connect Podconference, we chat about older speech students, unique challenges that they face, and strategies you can use to work with them in the classroom and virtually.

The more you can get your older students to “buy-in” to speech sessions with you by finding what motivates them, the easier it will be to work with them. I hope you enjoy this episode and are excited to dive in with your older speech students.

After completing this Podconference, participants will be able to:

    1. Describe factors to consider when working with older speech students
    2. Describe ways to keep older students motivated via distance learning
    3. Identify at least three evidence-based strategies for working with older speech students
    4. List tools and resources available for working with older students virtually

Remember, if you would like to earn CEUs from listening to this “pod-course” episode, you must go to the SLP Connect website to pay the administration fee before October 7th, 2020 at 8 pm EST.
