72: SLPs Role with Executive Functioning with Kate Melillo Jun 14, 2021
    Show notes

What does executive functioning have to do with speech-language pathology?

SLPs are able to work on many skills under the executive function umbrella including task initiation, focus, time management, working memory, task completion, organization, self-regulation, and more.

Although it is a newer topic in our field, we are able to work with students with executive functioning challenges to accomplish various tasks and achieve goals. Kate Melillo is joining me in this episode to break all of this down!

Kate obtained her Master of Education degree in Communication Disorders with a focus on pragmatic language. Prior to earning this degree, Kate spent time as a pragmatic skills researcher, helping to design web-based programs and resources for neurodiverse individuals to learn different types of pragmatic skills, workplace skills, and transition skills. She was also a preschool and kindergarten teacher in the US and abroad. Kate has worked in the clinical speech and language field with a wide range of children from infancy to young adulthood, as well as older adults.

Kate’s passion is teaching her students and families about navigating the social world using a neurodiverse perspective. In a fast-paced world of social media and screens, she believes that now more than ever families can use every opportunity necessary to connect face-to-face in a way that they choose.

We cover various examples of executive functioning challenges, why SLPs teach self-advocacy and pragmatic skills rather than just social skills, how assessment is handled for executive functioning challenges, the importance of teaching students self-advocacy and so much more!

If you are interested in how you can help your students (especially the older ones) with their executive functioning skills, tune in!

71: Do SLPs Treat Dyslexia? with Jeannette Washington Jun 07, 2021
    Show notes

Do you know how SLPs fit into the dyslexia intervention process?

In this episode, I am talking to Jeannette Washington about dyslexia and what an SLPs role is in treating children with dyslexia.

Jeannette Washington, M.Ed. has worked as both a Speech Language Pathologist and Software Engineer. Her experience working largely with dyslexic learners has earned her recognition in The Washington Post alongside the cofounder of the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity. Jeannette is trained as a LETRS instructor which is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association.

Learning to code further ignited her passion for special populations in the tech industry and inspired her to write the book Technical Difficulties: Why Dyslexic Narratives Matter In Tech. Jeannette can always be found boasting the importance of accessibility, inclusivity, cognitive diversity (or neurodiversity), and equity in tech.

We talk about the early indicators of dyslexia, why dyslexia is not one-size-fits-all, ways you can move forward and help your students, and much more.

If you want to learn more about your role as an SLP when it comes to treating children with dyslexia, this episode will be so informative for you!

    Show notes

Do you use YouTube in speech therapy? I hope you do!

YouTube videos can be so motivating for our students and there are SO many goals that we can address while using them.

The way I see it, students love technology and YouTube, so why not utilize it? Plus, it is a great opportunity to switch things up and reduce reading and writing!

I know you will enjoy this interview and get a lot of good value out of the tips and resources that I share with Deborah!

Deborah Brooks provides speech therapy to individuals of all ages and levels of need throughout NYC. From podcasting to teaching college courses to creating her own educational materials, there isn’t a stone in the world of Speech Pathology that Deborah Brooks has left unturned.

When she's not doing therapy, Deborah and co-host Maria Kotsonis have a weekly Speech Therapy podcast on iTunes and Spotify called SLPs Wine and Cheese. If you’d like to see Deborah’s sessions in action, she posts daily videos to her Instagram account @deborahbrooksslp.

Make sure to check out her podcast, SLPs Wine and Cheese, and subscribe for more of her episodes!
