    81: Don't Forget About Rapport Aug 16, 2021
    Show notes

Whether we like it or not, a lot of older speech students don’t necessarily like to come to speech...

It is super common for older speech students to not be enthusiastic about coming to see us, so this is why it is so important to build rapport with our students.

We want our students to feel like they are in a warm and comfortable environment because then they are willing to take more risks, trust us and respect us.

This isn’t always easy to do, so I am covering how to build rapport with your older speech students while maintaining proper rules and boundaries with them in this episode!

I have been talking a lot lately about working with older speech students and how to keep them motivated, give them appropriate resources, and plan with ease and confidence, so make sure that you are listening to the rest of the episodes in this series!

Tune in to this episode to hear how I recommend building rapport with your students. I am sharing my best tips and advice, so you don’t want to miss it!

80: Should I Know Their Reading Level? Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

It can be a challenge to find materials that are both at a lower reading level and include age-appropriate language skills and concepts.

These materials are so important to find and use though because there is evidence that shows that when we work on age-appropriate language skills with our students, we can boost their reading.

If we bring in materials that are too challenging for them, too simple, or not age-appropriate, our students will have a hard time building their confidence and their skills.

To help you with this challenge, I am covering how to know what materials to bring in to help your students in this episode. I am then getting into how to use them once you have them.

This is another episode in a whole series that I am doing about working with older speech students. Each episode provides helpful tips, advice, and information that will save you tons of time and stress! Make sure to tune into them all!

76: Social Skills Through Books?! with Kimberley Delude Jul 12, 2021
    Show notes

How do you help your students with their social skills?

My guest, Kimberly Delude, and I are talking all about social skills and how to work on social skills through books in this episode. She is the perfect person to be talking to about this because she actually wrote her own books to help promote language growth and social skills.

Kimberly Delude is a Speech Pathologist in public schools. By day she enjoys helping her students find their voices, while at night she writes. She is the author of two popular series: Freddie the Fly and Fairy Tales 2.0. The former is a series that helps kids learn a variety of social skills through fun lessons that don't feel like learning. The latter is a series of books for at-home practice that parents can easily employ.

We are getting into how to use a book in general in a speech session from start to finish, how to get a better understanding of the things we don’t see, why practice and collaboration are so important for carryover, and more.

Kimberly is sharing endless ideas, insight, and inspiration on incorporating books to work on social skills, and she is also giving away one of her books! Listen to this episode to learn all about this topic and also to find out how to win!

75: Private Practice SLPs and School SLPs...Let's Unite! with Lexi Smith Jul 05, 2021
    Show notes

I know many of you in the schools are working with students that are also seeing children in private practices or outside therapy. There are also a lot of you that want to recommend students to outside therapy because they might not have qualified for school-based therapy.

A lot of questions come up about these types of situations which is why I am so grateful to be joined by Lexi Smith in this episode who owns a private practice called Cascada Resilient Therapy.

We are talking all about how school SLPs and private SLPs can collaborate to set up the best plan of care possible for the child/family.

Lexi Smith, MA, CCC-SLP collaborates with many occupational and physical therapists, play therapists, counselors, nutritionists, doctors, and other care providers. These contacts and her breadth of experience allow her to provide the highest quality and most holistic care possible in order to fulfill her commitment to empower her clients and help them and their families achieve their goals.

Lexi opened Cascada Resilient Therapy in early March 2021. After marketing her tail off, she ended up with a few clients in just two weeks. She gets to dedicate so much more of her effort to personalizing care towards families and doesn’t feel burned out at the end of the day like she used to before owning a private practice!

If you find yourself wondering how you can better collaborate with other SLPs, this interview is a great resource for you.

74: Having a Multicultural Mindset and More: Working With Your English Language Learners with Sofia Almeida Jun 28, 2021
    Show notes

Do you bring a strong multicultural mindset to your classroom?

This is so important because it allows us to create greater connections with the many different families and clients that we work with.

My guest, Sofia Almeida, is joining us to talk all about working with bilingual students and English language learners. She is also giving tips to monolingual speech therapists!

Sofia Almeida is new to this crazy speech world. She just graduated in 2019 and dove headfirst into the world of Instagram, joining an amazing community. She is a bilingual speech therapist in the big apple where she is certified in both Spanish and English. Having lived in Queens her whole life has allowed her to develop a multicultural mindset which has bettered her as an SLP, specifically with the bilingual community. She has a love for the early childhood population where she works in a preschool by day and in private practice as a side hustle.

Her passion shines through her love for the field and hopes that everyone can develop a multicultural mindset in order to not only better our field but the world!

I am always so eager to have conversations like these because I actually work a lot with English language learners. I learned so much from Sofia, and I know you will too.

If you want to strengthen your multicultural mindset, this episode will be so helpful for you.
