Slow Living | Creating a Life of Purpose in a Hustle Driven World

If life feels a little too fast, a little too loud, or just more complicated than it needs to be—you’re in the right place.

I’m Stephanie O’Dea, a New York Times bestselling author, longtime slow living advocate, and creator of A Year of Slow Cooking. I’ve been writing and talking about slow living since 2008, back when blogging was still a thing. 😂

After years of chasing productivity, building businesses, raising three daughters, writing 11 books, and trying to keep up with the internet, I’ve become convinced of something:

A good life doesn’t have to be a busy life.

Slow Living is about creating a life of purpose in a hustle-driven world—and finding a pace that actually feels good.

Here, we talk about the practical side of slow living: how to simplify your schedule, reduce overwhelm, create routines that work, be more present, improve your relationships, take care of yourself, and make room for the things that matter most.

This isn’t about becoming perfectly organized or living in a cottage in the woods.

    It’s about real life.

Work. Family. Parenting. Marriage. Money. Health. Home. Time. Aging. Change. And all the little decisions that shape our ordinary days.

You’ll hear solo episodes, honest conversations, practical slow living advice, personal stories, and occasional coaching conversations.

Some episodes are gentle reminders to slow down.

    Some will make you laugh.

Some may challenge the way you think about productivity, success, and what you’re supposed to be doing with your life.

And some are simply here to remind you that you don’t have to do everything.

    My philosophy is simple:

    Do less.
    Slow down.
    Pay attention.
Figure out what matters to you.
    Build your life around that.

If you’re overwhelmed, over-scheduled, constantly trying to catch up, or simply wondering if there’s another way to live, you’re in the right place.

    Welcome to Slow Living.

    I’m Stephanie O’Dea.

    Let’s slow down together.

    Diet Culture Apr 15, 2024
    Show notes

Today's episode came to me in the middle of the night (yes literally!) and I had to share it with you. I want to talk about diet culture and some of the pressures that you can have from society around diets.

The number one thing I want you to take away from this episode is the need for self love! The love you have for yourself needs to be complete and total unconditional love. Even though the scale might not be the number you want or your favorite pair of pants don't fit like they use to, the most important thing to remember is to love yourself unconditionally.

In my coaching, I talk about health at every size with my clients. Because health is not just the number on the scale, it is also how you feel inside. Are you able to take your dog on a walk? Are you able to play with your kids or grandkids? Health is about so much more than the physical appearance.

When it comes to food, I don't cancel anything out. I believe in balance and lifiving life! However, I do have an acronym for "DIET" that I use every day - Do I Eat This? I ask myself how will it make me feel? This is something that has helped me in my personal journey!

Do you want more episodes to review for more self love? Check these out:

    What is PMDD -- Sandi's Story Apr 01, 2024
    Show notes

Today's episode is so special to me and marks an important start to April which is also PMD Awareness Month! My guest today is Sandi MacDonald and she is the co-founder of IAPMD which is the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders.

She started experiencing different symptoms and behaviors early in her life, as early as high school. Through many years of struggling emotionally and physically, she was always asking what was happening to her. She saw doctors, therapists, and tried different medications, but nothing was a cure.

It was not until she became a mother that she finally started to find answers. Sandi discovered that she had PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder). PMDD is something that is not widely talked about but Sandi has decided to bring it to the surface!

    We are answering your questions:

    • What are the classic symptoms to look for in PMDD?
    • Is there a link between PMDD and a hormone imbalance?
    • Does PMDD mean that perimenopause and menopause will be more difficult to go through?
    • Does alcohol increase symptoms?

If you want more information visit Sandi's website- it is a wonderful resource! https://iapmd.org/

    Financial Literacy Mar 11, 2024
    Show notes

Today we are talking about money! But probably not in the way you are thinking. We are talking all about financial literacy. I am sharing my life's story and how I became financially literate.

What is financial literacy? It is the ability to understand and use financial skills to make informed and effective decisions about money.

I grew up in a very frugal home. My parents and grandparents taught me so many life lessons around this. However, early in my marriage my husband and I started playing around with credit cards and quickly found ourselves in debt.

It was not until after the birth of our first child that we realized that this was not the best life choice. So, we stopped and started educating ourselves in our finances. We started reading book and watching shows to learn anything we could on how to be smart in our spending. And I am sharing it all with you today!

Getting into Yoga Mar 04, 2024
    Show notes

Today we are talking about one of my favorite things to do for my own physical and mental health... YOGA! It has taken me many years to embrace yoga but has truly transformed both my mind and body.

I took my first yoga class when I was only 18 years old. A friend and I decided to try hot yoga and we soon realized that it was not for the faint of heart. Needless to say we did not make it through the entire class. But this started my wellness journey.

I always looked at exercise as a way to keep my body looking a certain way. Through my 20-30s exercise was just something that I did, it was not a mind and body connection. I tried light weight training which led to high interval training. But ultimately I felt that disconnect between my mind and body.

Since then I have rediscovered yoga and it has been a fantastic way to stay present and healthy. One of my favorite online yoga resources is Yoga with Adriene. She has an amazing YouTube channel full of great yoga videos. Follow along with her below!

If you practice yoga or decide to try it for the first time let me know! I love hearing your stories!
