The Taste of a Place, with Tony Smith of Portugal’s Quinta de Covela Jul 29, 2024

This week’s guest is another fascinating individual that I hoped would be a guest before I even launched the podcast!

Tony Smith and I met in 2012 when we were classmates at the Culinary Institute of America’s Wine Program in the Napa Valley. He and his parter had just purchased a very historic Winery in Portugal and he was in the program to prep him for winery ownership and production.

I was lucky enough to visit the stunning Covela property in 2016 and I knew it was a special the place the moment we drove in.

We dive into:

The roller coaster of buying and restoring a winery property that dates back to the 1500’s
Acquiring the coveted Organic certification and what that means (compared to Biodynamic)
Does glassware matter?
Can you taste minerality from the soil in the wine?
A surprising natural winemaking technique they are using that I've never heard of before
Our "Sip Spotlight" tasting of 3 of his unique and gorgeous wines made from the rare Avesso grape

Best Day Ever! The Food and Wine of Sicily Jul 15, 2024

To kick of Season 2, I’m sharing highlights from our AWESOME day in Sicily on our recent vacation (July 2024).

Legacy Winemaking in the Finger Lakes, with Ben Hartman Jun 10, 2024

I recently re-connected with Ben Hartman, who grew up in my same hometown in Central New Jersey. I was excited to learn that like me, Ben had also chased the dream of making wine... but he's doing it in the Finger Lakes of New York! He and his wife Michelle own and operate Deep Root Vineyard and are doing some really exciting and interesting things, including a surprising wine from 100+ year old vines from their property.

The World Showcase in Epcot has 11 countries represented around a beautiful lagoon, and each stop highlights the people, culture, music, food and drinks from that nation!

Why Does Wine Matter? Apr 08, 2024

In this week's episode, I'm answering this super thought-provoking question: Why is wine Important? Why does wine matter?

Karen MacNeil is a very well know wine writer, author of the Wine Bible (one of my favorite wine reference books) and an instructor of mine in the Culinary Institute of America's wine program. She recently asked the question, "why is wine important?" to a group of winemakers here in California and their responses got me thinking.

In reading her recent blog article, which also talks about the changes and trends in present day wine consumption, I was intrigued by this question. As someone who made a total life change to study, make and teach others about wine, it is definitely an important part of my life... but WHY it's important to me and to YOU?... well that took me a minute to wrap my head around.

Wine is the "taste of a place"
Wine is an expression of the time when it was made and the people who made it
It's emotion in a bottle (especially my bottles)
It brings people together
It's an ancient process that still exists today
It's just freakin delicious

I'm giving you a very quick and easy tool to better approach what’s in the glass, so you can be better at knowing WHAT you like and WHY you like it! (Or why you DON’T!)

We are using the acronym FEW to identify:

Is there really a difference between a $10 bottle of wine and a $100 bottle of wine?

If you’ve ever been stumped (or frankly a little miffed) at why bottles are priced they way they are, I’m going to shed some light on the specifics that factor into how wine is priced- so you can feel better about grabbing that bottle… whether it’s the $10, the $100 or anything in between.

There was so much to simplify for you here that I split into 2 parts- In this week's conclusion, we cover the last 2 elements that affect the COST of production of wine which has a direct correlation to the PRICE of that bottle.

Family Secrets with Aunt Vivian Jan 29, 2024

My Dad’s sister, my Aunt Vivian, is a Brooklyn native and the Matriarch of our family. At the time of this Episode release (Jan 2024) she just turned 87 years old and she is one of the best storytellers I know.

She has taught multiple generations how to cook “with love” and her eggplant parmigiana, potato croquettes and Sunday sauce will put anyone in the most glorious food coma.

When I was home for Christmas, I asked her if she was up to recording a favorite family recipe with me...and what ensued was the funniest recount of some of our family’s history along with a heartfelt conversation with one of my most favorite people on the planet.

Strategies for Smart Shopping: How to Pick the Right Wine Jan 22, 2024

If you've ever felt a bit (or totally) overwhelmed by all of the wine bottles staring back at you from their store shelves, you’re going to want to listen in as I give you some simple hacks to help you pick the right wine each time.

I’ll break down:

How to decipher wine labels to look for clues to pick your perfect style
How the bottle shape can clue you in as to what’s inside if the label isn’t obvious
What the location in the store (and even on the shelf) can tell you about the wine

These quick and simple ideas should help you feel more confident next time you find yourself in the wine store so you don’t just select your wine by the coolest label (which might be ok too, as long as you like what's inside!)

Sippin' With My Sisters Jan 15, 2024

My younger sister, Amanda, had the great idea for us to record an episode together when we were home for Christmas 2023 in NJ. Although she lives in Southern CA and I'm in Northern CA, our hearts are still rooted in New Jersey, where our older sister and the rest of our family reside. Who is this Nikki person, anyway? Jan 01, 2024

So... our Producer, Kathryn, suggested that we turn the tables and someone interview me for this week's episode. This way, you'll get to know me a little and learn about what gets me fired up! (hint: it rhymes with food and wine.)

I chose my good friend, Steve Tinn, in Orlando to get the job done. Not only is Steve one of the wittiest and best storytellers I know, but he’s had a front row seat (and been a trusted advisor) during the last 2 decades of re-inventing myself and following my passions. He’s provided humor and levity throughout the ups and downs of it all.

In a recent visit back to Orlando, Steve and I met at one of our favorite restaurants that we used to frequent when I lived there, called Dragonfly I visit pretty much every time I'm back in town! It’s some of the best sushi I found on the east coast. So this is the first of an ongoing special series of restaurant recordings!

Turning Passion into Wine, with Winemaker Sally Johnson Blum Dec 11, 2023

This week I’m talking with Sally Johnson Blum, a well known winemaker from Napa and Sonoma and one of Glamour Magazines “10 Most Bad-ass Women Winemakers! We worked together for many years and from the moment I first met her I have always been inspired by her cool and calm demeanor coupled with her laser- focused attention to detail and ability to craft phenomenal wines from really unique vineyards.

You’ll hear about how this Michigan native found her way into wine, by way of France, and a funny story about what led her to transition from the vineyard (viticulture) side to the the winemaking (oenology) side in her education, which includes a Masters Degree from UC Davis.

From St. Francis, to Pride Mountain Vineyards, Mondavi, Tamber Bay and Mullen Road Cellars, you’ll hear the journey of her highly successful career and what she has learned along the way, as well as what she has just added to her already full working portfolio as of late!

Sip Spotlight: We taste a fantastic wine from a local (to us) woman-owned wine brand and that leads to a super interesting discussion about being a female winemaker in an industry that is still every male driven. We even touch on how becoming a mom of 2 affected her tank-shoveling track record….
