Guns in the Workplace with Jake Charles Oct 30, 2020
    Show notes

On this week’s episode of SHRM’s All Things Work podcast, we’re discussing the very complex issue of guns in the workplace. Much of the complexity is rooted in the fact that each state is responsible for enacting its own laws about guns and the places gun owners are allowed to bring them, including the workplace and company parking lots. What that means for employers is that they’re bound by the laws of the state where they operate, which results in a complex legal picture at a time when employers are striving to keep their employees safe.
Joining us to discuss guns in the workplace is Jake Charles. Jake is a Lecturing Fellow and Executive Director of the Center for Firearms Law at Duke University. He also writes and teaches on the Second Amendment and gun laws.
On this episode of All Things Work, listen in to hear host Tony Lee and Jake discuss what HR professionals should know about gun laws, gun rights and how they can help prevent workplace shootings while recognizing the Second Amendment rights of their employees.

Team Building During a Pandemic with Elizabeth Bille Oct 23, 2020
    Show notes

SHRM’s All Things Work podcast continues to provide coverage of how the world of work is responding to the pandemic.
The large-scale shift to remote work in response to COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the experience of how employees interact with one another, especially as teams. The absence of employees’ proximity also eliminates both the physical cues and informal, non-work related interactions between team members that are so important in producing a shared sense of connection and cohesion.
As a result, organizations are having to rethink what they can do to create that experience of interpersonal connectivity when team members can’t be in the same place.
Joining us to discuss effective team building during a pandemic is Elizabeth Bille. Elizabeth is Senior Vice President of Workplace Culture at EVERFI, a leading provider of workplace training.
In this episode, hear Elizabeth and host Tony Lee discuss steps employers can take to create a remote work experience that achieves the same sense of togetherness that accompanies onsite work.

Lisa Nagele-Piazza on Marijuana in the Workplace Oct 16, 2020
    Show notes

With recreational and medical use of marijuana now legal in over 30 states, pot use has emerged as a complicated topic that raises many thorny questions for both employers and employees: Should employers still test for it? If so, what are the circumstances that they should? What sorts of accommodations should employers make for what sorts of employees?
Here to answer these questions and many more is SHRM’s own Lisa Nagele-Piazza. Lisa is SHRM Online's Senior Legal Editor, covering federal, state and local employment law developments. She closely follows marijuana legislation at the state level and its impact on the workplace, as well as drug testing rules. In this episode of SHRM’s All Things Work podcast, hear Lisa and host Tony Lee provide a comprehensive overview of what employers are and aren’t doing and are doing when it comes to pot, as well as their thoughts on what the future holds for marijuana in the workplace.
