    Show notes

In August 1994, 79-year-old Ruth Loader was recovering from her cancer treatments at her rural Ohio farmhouse, ready for a quiet evening with her book. When her daughter arrived at Ruth’s home, the back door was splintered, her glasses were left on the pillow, and Ruth was gone.

In this episode, we trace the disturbing series of events that followed: a red Buick seen across state lines, a pair of fugitives on a multi-state killing spree, and a confession that came too late.

Ruth’s body has never been found, but who were the men responsible, and why did they target Ruth? What can this case tell us about how vulnerable women are treated in the criminal justice system and in public memory?
