Dr. Rawls contributed production on the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, which was critically acclaimed as one of the best albums of 1998 and was a major force in the late-1990s underground hip hop explosion. Dr. Rawls has also produced and DJ’ed for artists such as the Beastie Boys, Ghostface of WuTang Clan, Capital Steez (Pro Era), Slum Village, Souls of Mischief, 9th Wonder, and Us3.
In addition to his work in music, Dr. Rawls holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in education from Ashland University, and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from Ohio University. Dr. Rawls has presented workshops on the music industry, Hip-Hop Education and beat making at several major universities around the country. Drawing on his nearly two decades of K-12 teaching experience, In 2019, Dr. Rawls, along with his co-author, John Robinson, released his first book entitled Youth Culture Power: A #HipHopEd Guide to Building Teacher-Student Relationships and Increasing Student Engagement (Peter Lang Publishers).

Nadine Marchessault, MEd, NBCT is the Co-Chair of the National Health Education Standards Task Force. She is also a Health Education Specialist at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education. Nadine has 17 years of experience in education (PreK-12), which includes service as a teacher and leader. She specializes in health education and mentoring to improve student learning and teacher practice. She is Experienced in designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments aligned to National Health Education Standards. Nadine has facilitated and collaborated with diverse stakeholders to review, adopt, and implement National Health Education Standards in the Hawai‘i State Department of Education.

Sarah Sparrow Benes (she/her) is currently an Assistant Professor & Program Coordinator of the School Health Education program at Southern Connecticut State University and SHAPE America's President. She transitioned from her role as an Associate Clinical Profession at Merrimack College in fall 2022. She has an Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching, an Ed.M. in human movement, a master’s degree in public health, and a B.S. in athletic training. Sarah started her career at Boston University as an athletic trainer before transitioning to the role of Physical and Health Education Teacher Prep Program Director. Sarah works in schools locally and nationally, and writes and presents on various health education topics.

Emily Jones is a Professor of Physical Education

Teacher Education, in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois

State University. She is the current chair of the SHAPE America Recruitment and

Retention Task Force and serves at the state level as the chair of the IAHPERD

Higher Education Committee. At Illinois State she is program director for the

undergraduate PE teacher education and coordinates the fully online master’s in

Physical Education Pedagogy sequence at ISU. Dr. Jones conducts research

related to recruitment into the field of physical education including the need

to increase the diversity of those entering the teaching force. She also

conducts research related to school- and community-based physical activity

programs and initiatives that enhance health and wellness.

Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health and

Physical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota State

University, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE America

Professional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention Task

Force and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankato

he is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and Physical

Education program. Dr. Schwamberger’s research interests relate to physical

education and physical activity of homeschool students. Prior to his position

in higher education, Dr. Schwamberger was an elementary and high school

physical educator and taught within the United States as well as abroad.

Ruth Childs

Ruth Childs, MFA, is a professor at State University of New York at Brockport. She has been at the College of Brockport Department of Theatre and Music Studies since 2001. Her teaching specialties include public speaking, acting, voice and speech, improv, and the politics of theatre. Childs served as regional chair of the National Playwriting Program for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and has been a respondent and reader for national and regional playwriting awards. She was awarded the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Gold Medallion. Childs is a public speaking consultant as well as a specialist in teaching self-advocacy. She directs the self-advocacy program at Camp Abilities each summer.

Lauren J. Lieberman

Lauren J. Lieberman, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Service Professor in the Kinesiology Department at the State University of New York at Brockport (SUNY) in adapted physical education. She started her career teaching at the Perkins School for the Blind in the Deafblind program. She is co-director of the Institute on Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness (IMSVI) (see www.brockport.edu/IMSVI) and founder and director of Camp Abilities, an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Lieberman has published over 193 peer-reviewed articles and 21 books and has been an invited guest speaker in the U.S. and internationally. She is a Research Fellow with the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity and has won awards from numerous organizations for her work.

Mary Connolly

Mary Connolly, BS, Med, is a professor at Cambridge College and adjunct professor at Curry College. She is an accomplished health education professional whose career spans nearly four decades and includes teaching and administration in public schools and higher education. Connolly served on the committee to revise the National Health Education Standards and is a member of the Massachusetts Interdisciplinary Health Education and Human Services Advisory Council and the American School Health Association (ASHA), Coordinator’s Committee, and is a reviewer for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. She presents at numerous state and national conferences and is a member of SHAPE America, AAHE, SOPIE, ASHA, ASCD, and MAAHPERD.

Kymm Ballard is an assistant professor and HETE and PETE coordinator at Campbell University. Her professional experiences include service for more than two decades as a health educator, physical educator, and school administrator, and 11+ years at the state level as Healthful Living Education & Athletics consultant in the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Also, she has nine years of experience in corporate and non-profit arenas collectively. These experiences have increased her capabilities in understanding budget, leadership and commitment. Her passion and direct service to children also influence her work at the national level today.

Tara B. Blackshear, Ed.D., is an equity scholar who specializes in health, physical activity, and education. She is an assistant professor of kinesiology and the coordinator of the physical education teacher education program at Towson University. Before her current role, Dr. Blackshear taught for 17 years in public, private, charter, and international schools in the United States, Egypt, and Thailand. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she held a three-year post in which she worked to prevent type II diabetes among middle school youth in the most extensive school-based physical activity intervention in the United States.
Dr. Blackshear's commitment to equity is evident in her work that appears in Quest, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, and numerous other journals. She is actively engaged with SHAPE America, SHAPE Maryland, Partnership for a Healthier America, Physical and Health Education Canada, International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP), USA Lacrosse, PhysEquity, and Baltimore City Public Schools.
Dr. Blackshear's research has garnered national and international attention. She has begun to have an impact on institutional change, policy, and practice, as evidenced by consultation requests from organizations and agencies that seek her help in their goal of creating culturally responsive, equitable environments. Critical Race Studies in Physical Education furthers Dr. Blackshear's unwavering commitment to confront and disrupt structures that do not serve Black youth in health, physical activity, and education.
Brian Culp, Ed.D., is a professor and department chair in the WellStar College of Health and Human Services at Kennesaw State University. Prior to his current position, Dr. Culp taught at Armstrong Atlantic State University and Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.

Dr. Culp’s research has incorporated topics under the umbrella of promoting equity. His work has appeared in journals such as Quest, Pedagogy in Health Promotion, Qualitative Health Research, and International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching as well as many other journals and books. He has also worked on projects for organizations such as Physical and Health Education Canada, SHAPE America, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Dr. Culp was inducted as the 34th fellow of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) in 2019. He is a past vice president and Engaged Scholar Mentor of NAKHE. Other national recognitions have included a dissertation award from the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators; the Hally Beth Poindexter Young Scholar Award from NAKHE; and the Mabel Lee Award, the Social Justice and Diversity Young Professionals Award, and the E.B. Henderson Award from SHAPE America.

Sean catches up with Brandy Lynch from the University of Central Missouri to chat about Women’s Social Justice in Sport. This is the final episode of our first EDI series, What is Social Justice?.

Brandy Lynch is an assistant professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Central Missouri (UCM). She specializes in the application of technology in instruction and the analysis of effective teaching. She earned her Ph.D. in sport and exercise science from the University of Northern Colorado and began her career at UCM in 2017. Her research has primarily focused on pre-service physical education teachers.

Lynch currently serves on SHAPE America’s EDI Committee. She is also a member of MOSHAPE’s EDI Committee and chair of the Future Directions Committee on the MOSHAPE Board of Directors. Motivated by her EDI experiences, she has received two Kansas City Teacher Education Collaborative (KC-TEC) Course Development grants to promote culturally informed and responsive teacher candidates who are prepared for employment in urban settings.

Ann Paulls-Neal is currently teaching health and physical education, as well as coaching, at the high school level. Previously, she spent 20 years teaching elementary physical education. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Early and Middle Childhood Physical Education. Ann has served SHAPE New Mexico (NMAHPERD), Southwest District AHPERD, and SHAPE America throughout her teaching career. She is currently executive director of SHAPE New Mexico and a member of the SHAPE America Physical Activity Council. Previous positions include SHAPE America Board of Directors member, president of Southwest District and NMAHPERD, as well as a variety of board, committee, and coordinator positions.

Sean is joined by guests from our recruitment and retention task force to discuss For the Love of Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week!

Emily Jones is a Professor of Physical Education Teacher Education, in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University. She is the current chair of the SHAPE America Recruitment and Retention Task Force and serves at the state level as the chair of the IAHPERD Higher Education Committee. At Illinois State she is program director for the undergraduate PE teacher education and coordinates the fully online master’s in Physical Education Pedagogy sequence at ISU. Dr. Jones conducts research related to recruitment into the field of physical education including the need to increase the diversity of those entering the teaching force. She also conducts research related to school- and community-based physical activity programs and initiatives that enhance health and wellness.

Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE America Professional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention Task Force and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankato he is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and Physical Education program. Dr. Schwamberger’s research interests relate to physical education and physical activity of homeschool students. Prior to his position in higher education, Dr. Schwamberger was an elementary and high school physical educator and taught within the United States as well as abroad.

Victor Ramsey currently works for the New York City Department of Education where he is an Educational Administrator who currently works as a Curriculum and Training Specialist within the Office of School Wellness Programs as part of the Brooklyn Implementation Team. In this capacity, he is responsible for supporting his team with developing training designs and curriculum review and development and supports health and physical educators and school administrators. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at York College, City University of New York teaching health and physical education classes to undergraduate students. In the latter role, he serves as Faculty Advisor and in the supervision of student teachers. Prior roles, NYCDOE Region 9 Director for Health and Physical Education, Middle School Assistant Principal, Dean of Students, and most notably, a health and physical education teacher. Essentially, a teacher at heart. His research interest is the attitudes and physical activity patterns of girls. He is a proud member of the SHAPE America Recruitment and Retention Task Force. His philosophy of education is grounded on the progressive belief that equity and respect for all students are essential to their growth and development.

Amy Dawson currently works for the New York City Department of Education as a Health Education Instructional Coach within the Office of School Wellness Programs. She was a health teacher for 19 years in Brooklyn public middle schools. She has facilitated full-day professional development workshops in all five boroughs, wrote the NYCDOE Middle School Health Education Scope and Sequence and has presented at both NYSAHPERD and SHAPE America conferences. She served on the New York State Mental Health Education Advisory Council.

In the last 30 years, Troy E. Boddy, Ed.D., has been an elementary school teacher, Reading Recover teacher, staff development teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of equity for two of the largest schools systems in Maryland.
Recently retired as director of Equity Initiatives for Montgomery County Public Schools in Rockville, Maryland, Boddy and his team were responsible for supporting the development practices, policies, and procedures that create access, opportunities to learn, and equitable academic and social-emotional outcomes for underserved students.
Boddy is co-founder of Student Equity Advocates and co-founder of the Building Our Network of Diversity (BOND) Project, a grassroots effort to retain males of color in the teaching profession.

Bio:
Since entering the field of education, Daryl Howard, Ph.D., has been exemplary in his efforts to make a positive impact in our society. Dr. Howard stands alongside some of the most talented and committed educators and organizers that share a passion for enlightening young people. He is employed by the Montgomery County public school system (MCPS) as well as McDaniel College and Prince George’s Community College as a lecturer in the education and sociology departments.
In MCPS, Howard serves as an #equity instructional specialist whose work and research interests include race and cultural proficiency, social emotional learning, and the triumphs and challenges of African American male students. As the chairperson of Maryland State Department of Education’s Task Force on Equity and Excellence for Black Boys, he researches and recommends policy and practice to disrupt harmful narratives, decrease disproportionality, and elevate achievement. Howard is also instrumental in the work of the Building our Network of Diversity (BOND) Project, where he leads initiatives focused on the recruitment, development and retention of male educators of color, as well as empowerment of underserved male students.
Dr. Howard is the author of Complex People: Insights at the Intersection of Black Culture and American Social Life, a work that examines Black culture within the context of the mainstream ideas of race, gender, and education.

Kenneth M. Smith is a National Board Certified Teacher and Montgomery County’s Washington Post Teacher of the Year for 2018. As a lead teacher in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public School system, he has taught several courses under the social studies umbrella including United States Government, AP US History, and African-American Studies. Currently he teaches Introduction to Sociology and a course that he designed for the county called Hip-Hop History and Culture. He is a strong advocate for teacher leadership outside of the classroom as well. He serves on the leadership team for the BOND (Building our Network of Diversity) Project which is an initiative focused on increasing the hiring, development and retention of male educators of color. He is also on the executive committee for the Minority Scholars Program (MSP), a youth-driven, social justice initiative designed to address the opportunity gaps that exist within the educational system. He’s dedicated to building the capacity of educators to be reflective, culturally responsive practitioners and social justice advocates for traditionally marginalized learners. Currently, MSP is partnering with the NEA to train students to lead professional development for teachers on how to engage their students on issues dealing with racial injustice in the classroom.

Kennedra Tucker is a K-12 Health & Physical Education specialist. A 14-year Maryland educator, Kennedra has been recognized as a 2017 Nationally Board Certified Teacher, the 2018 SHAPE Maryland Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year (TOY), and a SHAPE Maryland Past President. She is currently a member of the SHAPE EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) Committee and is presently pursuing an EdD from the University of Maryland, College Park in School System Leadership.
Dr. Patricia Morgan is an innovative and passionate educator and leader with a heart for equity, access, inclusion, and social justice. She is an experienced coordinator of Science, Health, and Physical Education programs. In addition to her work in the K-12 sector, she works in higher education as an adjunct professor. In her spare time, she studies and presents on Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and STEM at local, national, and international conferences.
Dr. Cara Grant is a supervisor for PreK-12 health and physical education supervisor in the 14th largest school district in the United States. She also supports the University of Maryland College Park Masters Degree with a teaching certificate in Physical Education. Her work infuses and prioritizes equity, diversity, and inclusion so all students are included and welcomed in curriculum, instruction, and teaching practices.
Dr. Mara Simon is an assistant professor in the department of physical education and health education at Springfield College. Her research interests include culturally relevant pedagogy in PE and addressing racial inequity and whiteness in PE teacher education.
John Strong is an Associate Professor within the HPE Department at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, NY. He is also the Chief Diversity and Equity Officer at NCCC, and enjoys using his capacity as CDEO to inform his interactions within SHAPE America’s EDI Committee.
Sue Scheppele is a Doctoral Physical Education Fellow at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. She taught PreK - 8th Grade Physical Education for seven years and was a lead PE teacher in the Houston Independent School District. In addition, she was a high school Health and Physical Education teacher for three years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sue is a certified DEI trainer for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and received the Walter Kase Award for teacher excellence in 2017.
Sean Nevills is a lifetime member of SHAPE America and current host for the podcast. As a former project director for SHAPE, Sean led the CDC funded COVID-19 initiatives for the 2020-21 school year. Prior to SHAPE, Sean served as Director of Health and Physical Education for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. He is a licensed K-12 physical educator having taught adapted PE, high school PE, and virtual classes throughout his teaching career. Sean’s work in education includes curriculum development, employee and community wellness, and educational equity. Sean has nearly 15 years of football coaching experience from the youth level through college and several years coaching track and field. He is an active member of Missouri SHAPE and serves as chair of MOSHAPE’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee.

Angela has 10 years of combined experience in the fields of program evaluation, psychological and educational research, educational assessment, statistics, and psychometrics. Prior to joining Peer Health Exchange, Angela worked for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which is the statistical arm of the US Department of Education. At NCES, Angela worked on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), where she was responsible for the design, analysis, reporting, and dissemination of NAEP assessment data, as well as managing quality assurance activities and program evaluation work in NAEP. She is published, and frequently asked to make presentations and sit on professional panels based on her expertise in her field. Angela has a doctorate and Master’s degree in psychology from Howard University and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Hear this live recap of the 2nd Annual #PhysEdChopped Challenge, a social event and collaborative competition at #SHAPETampa! Eight teams of teachers competed in a three-round single elimination tournament. Each round (Instant Activity, Skill Lesson, and "You're Being Observed...") featured a wacky combination of PE equipment. The teams were expected to use all of the equipment to create a game or activity that fit within the theme of each round. Four judges evaluated each activity based on Creativity, Use of the Equipment, and Presentation. Teams were “chopped” from the competition at the end of each round until one team was named “The #PhysEdChopped Champions!”

This national organization helps communities understand the true incidence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in youth, appraise risk factors, access preventative health care, apply life-saving skills, and advocate for sudden cardiac arrest prevention practices wherever youth congregate. Hear this live recap of the #PhysEdChopped Challenge, a social event and collaborative competition at #SHAPENashville! Ten groups of teachers competed in a three-round contest. Each round (Instant Activity, Skill Lesson, and Review/Closure) featured a wacky combination of PE equipment. The teams were expected to use all of the equipment to create a game or activity that fit within the theme of each round.
Four judges evaluated each activity based on Creativity, Use of the Equipment, and Presentation. Teams were “chopped” from the competition at the end of each round until one team was named “The #PhysEdChopped Champions!”

Many people think there is nothing you can do to prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Sudden Cardiac Death. The truth is—you can—you just have to be prepared. Join us as the SHAPE America podcast team invites the Executive Director and Board Members of Parent Heart Watch to discuss Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth, appraise risk factors, access preventative health care, apply life-saving skills to prevent sudden death, and advocate for sudden cardiac arrest prevention practices wherever youth congregate.
Panelists include; *Martha Lopez-Anderson (Executive Director, Parent Heart Watch) - After the sudden death of her seemingly healthy 10-year-old son in 2004 blindsided Martha, she immersed herself in education and training relating to the prevention and treatment of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in youth. For nearly a decade, Martha served as the Chair for the Board of Directors of Parent Heart Watch. Martha was part of a task force comprised of the American Heart Association and twelve other national health and safety organizations in developing a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP) for Schools and was part of the writing group that authored the CERP policy statement. She also serves on the Institute of Medicine’s Sudden Cardiac Arrest Collaborative; the Cardiac Safety Research Consortium; Youth Sports Safety Alliance; Citizen CPR Foundation’s Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Youth Task Force; the Orange County (Florida) EMS Advisory Council; the National Advisory Committee for the Sudden Death in Young Registry and the National Center for Fatality Review & Prevention.
*Susan Canning (Parent Heart Watch Board Member/Founder of KEVS Foundation) - After the sudden loss of her 19-year-old son, Kevin, to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Susan founded KEVS Foundation in 2012 in his memory. KEVS Foundation’s mission is to raise awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth, to donate AED units to youth organizations and schools, and to provide free heart screenings in the local youth community. Susan is an American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/AED instructor and has trained thousands of coaches and students, and is a representative on the Massachusetts AHA Advisory Board. Susan has been instrumental in the passage of two life-saving bills in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and currently has another piece of legislation pending in Boston.
*Kimberly G. Harmon, M.D. (Section Head, Sports Medicine Section Professor, Departments of Family Medicine and Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Head Football Physician, University of Washington/Parent Heart Watch Medical Advisory Board) - Kim is a Professor in Family Medicine and Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington where she is the Section Head of the Sports Medicine Section. She is a past president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (2009-2010) and currently serves on their foundation board. She is the head football physician at the University of Washington and is an associate editor for the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Her interest on sudden cardiac death in high school students and NCAA athletes has led to published research and presentations at national and international conferences. She lectures nationally and internationally on sudden cardiac death in athletes, has published extensively on the topic and her research has won numerous awards. She most recently co-authored the “International Criteria for ECG Interpretation in Athletes” as part of a world-wide consortium of medical professionals who sought to establish a new best practice in preventing sudden death in youth athletes.
