    Shame Spiral

A comedy podcast about shame- because no one roasts you harder than yourself! Each week, psychotherapist-turned-comedian Ely Kreimendahl exploits her therapy skills to talk all-things-shame with a new special guest. Every guest shares a core story of something that once made them spiral HARD, answers both silly and emotionally complicated questions, and even if these conversations are ACCIDENTALLY therapeutic, it’s not therapy…. Ely goes ALL IN on sharing her shame, too. Does coming together to laugh at our shame and the often inherently comic absurdity of being human make it all easier to tolerate?! Listen in and see what you think. We’ll laugh, we’ll cry…. we’ll SPIRAL.

"Straight To The Rotten Core Of My Deficiencies" w/ Leslie Jamison Nov 22, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with novelist, essayist, and gorgeous person Leslie Jamison (Make It Scream, Make It Burn; The Empathy Exams.) We talked the terror of harming others, the complicated notion of art as therapeutic, and shame personified as a highly critical -and generously tattooed- male graduate student.
Plus, Leslie shares a brutal adolescent shame story about seeing her worst fears about herself embodied and then MEMORIALIZED in her high school yearbook.
Follow Leslie on Twitter @lsjamison and check her website lesliejamison.com, where you can learn more about the many incredible books she's written, and decide which you want to read FIRST (if you haven't devoured them all already, like I have.)
You can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok @elykreimendahl, and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes.

"Welcome To My Party! You Might Get Poisoned" w/ Jen Silverman Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with playwright, novelist and television writer Jen Silverman (We Play Ourselves, The Roommate, Collective Rage: A Play In 5 Betties.) We talked the protected joy in watching others rather than being watched, dared to investigate the world of trigger & content warnings, and even processed some shame-filled moments in our first meeting as the ex-partner and current partner of the SAME PERSON. We also chat about social media and Twitter in particular, and I must note that this was recorded BEFORE the notorious Elon Musk takeover...which is why that element may feel glaringly absent from the conversation.
Plus, Jen shares an excruciating shame story about scalding herself with boiling water and enduring a second-degree burn while in rehearsal for her play, all while trying to exist like absolutely nothing is happening.

Follow Jen on Instagram @this_panda_is_sad (and you really should, because Jen actually draws sad pandas) and Twitter @_Jen_Silverman. And you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok @elykreimendahl, and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes.

"We Can't All Be Heroes" w/ Amos Mac Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with television writer, producer and photographer Amos Mac (Y :The Last Man, Gossip Girl.) We talked beating yourself up when you fail to be a hero, navigating connection when you'd kinda rather escape to an isolated cabin in the woods, and even processed some juicy former roommate drama between us, involving a nosy landlord, a couch hacked into pieces with an AX (!!!) and an extraordinarily pissed off cat. Plus, Amos shares a shame story about desperately yearning for Anne Heche's memoir in the moments after she died (RIP to the incomparable queen Anne Heche.)
Follow Amos on Instagram @amosmac and Twitter @theamosmac, and you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok @elykreimendahl, and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes.

"I Don't Think We Can Fault People For Surviving" w/ Brandon Kyle Goodman Nov 01, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with actor, television writer, author and huge-hearted gem Brandon Kyle Goodman (Big Mouth, You Gotta Be You.) We talked perfectionism, the arrested development that often comes with queerness, the struggle and value of learning to be soft, and so much more. Plus, Brandon shares a story they'd previously ONLY SHARED WITH THEIR HUSBAND (!!!!) about choices they made as a young person in a bad relationship, and how they've come to allow themselves grace for doing what they needed to survive.
Follow Brandon on Instagram @brandonkylegoodman (and you really should, because their Instagram is an inspiring, real and hilarious ride) and Twitter and TikTok @brandonkgood. This week I spiraled out with television writer and lovely soul Katherine Kearns (Hacks, Yellowjackets.) We talked regrets, binging bad TV in the early pandemic, growing up Black with a cool, queer & very white Dad, the brutal honesty of children, and so much more. Plus, Katherine shares her seminal shame story about being a small child and inadvertently heisting a bag of delicious candy from the grocery store.

    "I Can't Believe You're Asking People This" w/ Michelle Tea Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with novelist, memoirist, Tarot reader & literary arts organizer Michelle Tea (Knocking Myself Up, Against Memoir.) We talked about how we'd rather be overwhelming than boring, explored the shame inherent to parenting, confessed moments in our friendship that once made us spiral, and so much more. Plus, Michelle shares a ridiculously hilarious and deeply humiliating story about a teenaged hookup gone wrong- that was so bad it literally gave ME intense secondhand embarrassment just listening to it!
Follow Michelle on Twitter @TeaMichelle, and on Instagram @michelleteaz! You should also BUY HER MOST RECENT BOOK!!!!! It's called "Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of My (In) Fertility ," and it's an incredibly funny, vulnerable and real exploration of queer baby-making, pregnancy, and everything that goes with it. Which is- a lot. In a great way. READ IT, GET IT, DO NOT WAIT, etc!!!!

    "I Pray I Didn't Offend Anyone...Especially Raquel" w/ Sydney Battle Oct 11, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with actor, writer, comedian and true gem Sydney Battle (Stapleview, Swan Boy.) We dug deep into what went wrong in Sydney's very fresh therapy break-up, agreed we'd rather be caught doing the dirty by a huge group of strangers than a single family member, discussed how people in NY vs LA respond to a public panic attack, and so much more. Plus, Sydney shares a shame story about missing a college midterm because she spent six hours trying to choose an outfit. But obviously...it's a bit more complicated than that.
Follow Sydney on Twitter @sydneybattle, and on Instagram and TikTok @sydbattle. And you really should, because her character videos are TO DIE- spiraling right now thinking about how many times I've watched them. And you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok (although I don't really understand TikTok yet so be gentle) @elykreimendahl and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes.

"It Feels Like We're Gonna F*ck Each Other" w/ Anna Drezen Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with brilliant and criminally funny comedian & writer Anna Drezen (SNL, Girls5eva, Praise Petey.) We compared the "niceness" of our Moms, bonded over how uncomfortable it is to feel cared for, and wondered which is more vulnerable: inconveniencing an entire train full of strangers, or somebody you have a crush on. Plus, Anna shares a shame story about planning a baby shower for her friend and feeling like she shit the...bassinet, if you will. Follow Anna on Twitter and Instagram @annadrezen, and keep on the lookout for her new animated comedy "Praise Petey," which will be coming out on Freeform!
You can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok (although I don't really understand TikTok yet so be gentle) @elykreimendahl and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes.

"If You Don't Disown Me, You're The Best!" w/ Dylan Adler Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

This week I spiraled out with the ridiculously funny, insightful AND delightful comedian Dylan Adler! We talked being baby queers, the horrors of your Mom witnessing your super vulnerable ( and sometimes Freudian) jokes, and turning trauma and shame into comedy.
Plus, Dylan shares a story of having a (in my biased and outraged opinion, as a licensed psychotherapist) HORRIFYINGLY BAD therapist who sent him down a shame spiral which is pretty much the exact opposite of what that therapist needed to be doing, okay!? CW: this episode includes discussion of having experienced sexual assault, and the aftermath & recovery, but no specifics or details of the SA are shared. However, MUCH is shared about processing that harm via Dylan's incredible writing, singing and performing, which you should check out for yourself:
Dylan's performing on 11/7 at Littlefield in Brooklyn, and the audio album of his show with co-creator, comic Kelly Bachmann, "Rape Victims are Horny, Too" is out now! Like everywhere! GET AFTER IT!

We talked growing up in the Catholic Church, being OCD and Zoloft twinsies, queerness, the relentless desire to be a "good hang," the agony and ecstasy of reading mean youtube comments, and so much more. Plus, Samantha shares a story about the shame spiral evoked by her first televised stand up set on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
