Sewing Weekender launch! May 16, 2021
    Show notes

This year we're helping you learn more about the online Sewing Weekender run by Rachel and Kate of The Foldline and Charlotte Powell of Charlotte Emma Patterns. Clear your calendar for the 12 and 13 June 2021.

This year Charlotte, Kate and Rachel have tailored the online Sewing Weekender with a mix of Master class tutorials, Expert talks, and Maker chats based on the feedback from last year's attendees. In 2020 over 1,900 tickets were sold for this event and attendees came from 37 countries.

This year's event includes more online socials through with five live zoom chat available throughout the weekend where anyone can join and share how they are getting on with their sewing project and sew along with other attendees.

Ticket holders will also have access to the private Facebook groups to share their projects and connect with each other.

Last year was the first time the Sewing Weekender was held online and the work Rachel, Kate and Charlotte did to bring the sewing community together has been a template for many sewing community online events. They're such an innovative team of sewing community supporters.

We'll be podcasting for the Sewing Weekender with Kylie of Kylie and the Machine and with Tessa who lives in Australia and she's an avid fan of the Sewing Weekender, so you can get ready to have your sewing projects ready once you buy your ticket.

    Sarah Veblen May 10, 2021
    Show notes

Sarah Veblen is our first sewing instructor who will take use through her pants fitting research and the grid method she uses to get trousers and pants to fit you to perfection.

Sewcialists theme is 'all butts welcome', hence the focus on pants that fit your 'behind' better.

Sarah uses horizontal balance lines and vertical balance lines to finesse the rear fit of pants patterns when you only have 10percent of work to make your home sewn trousers look sensational rather than not.

Our next fit specialists are Rae Cumbie of Fit for Art patterns and lastly, we'll chat to Leila Keleher of Muna and Broad patterns.

Me Made May 2021 is not a photo challenge, however, many people choose to document their challenge by taking and sharing photos.

Round table discussion Apr 26, 2021
    Show notes

As a sewist, where do you get your sewing information from and have you made the decision about how far you want to develop your sewing skills. Sewists can and do decide for themselves and Sewcialists provides many blog posts and podcasts to do that.

Susan Khalje is a couture sewing specialists and contributing editor for Threads Magazine. Gabby Brown is the fit guru for Sewcialists who brings her extensive sewing manufacturing experience to this round table discussion.

Sewcialists provides the forum to give all sewists the ability to discuss and make their decisions about what sewing information they choose to use and value. New sewists have the luxury to make mistakes as they build their sewing knowledge. We all build our sewing knowledge over time and with practice.

Listen into our extensive conversation to develop your critical thinking about how you want to develop your sewing knowledge. Make sure you listen to the library of Sewcialists podcasts available from the website.

Kate Ward repurposing ideas Apr 22, 2021
    Show notes

Decluttering has had a positive effect on people simplifying their lives but decluttering has also increased the amount of waste experienced by Op shops and thrift stores.

Kate Ward of Zen Stitching discusses ways to repurpose clothes so that we're not adding to landfill. You could say repurposing clothes is being mindful of what you own and how you dispose or give it another life.

This is just one board of upcycling ideas you can be inspired by.

Kate has contributed to many sewing save and mending podcasts so make sure you go back and catch up on all of Kate's podcasts.

Haptic and Hue podcast Apr 21, 2021
    Show notes

Jo Andrews started the Haptic and Hue podcast in 2020 to tell the story of the hidden hands behind textiles and the way in which they are a detective story you can hold.

In season 2, Jo sets out to explore the way in which cloth expresses our deepest feelings, from sorrow to joy, from warmth to pain. Each episode will look at a different feeling and unravel its story in fabric, thinking about different cultures and traditions to help us do that.

In this podcast you'll also hear how you can contribute to the development of Series 3.

    Fashion Revolution week 2021 Apr 19, 2021
    Show notes

Fashion Revolution Week is the time when we come together as a global community to create a better fashion industry. It centres around the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, which killed 1,138 people and injured many more on 24 April 2013. This year, as we mark 8 years since the tragedy, Fashion Revolution Week will focus on the interconnectedness of human rights and the rights of nature. Our campaign will amplify unheard voices across the fashion supply chain and harness the creativity of our community to explore innovative and interconnected solutions.

We've published various podcasts where the community has taken action to keep textile workers safe and paid for their work.

This podcast was produced to showcase Ethical Clothing Australia's 10 year anniversary. Their first and only week focused on ethically accredited Australian manufacturers and locally-made textiles, clothing and footwear. It was our chance to celebrate the businesses, designers and importantly the skilled workers behind the garments made in Australia.

Make sure you listen to earlier podcasts by Annemieke discuss creating Enschede Textielstad. The retail arm of this sustainable weaving mill is Sustainable Fabrics. Their Instagram account is @enschedetextielstad

Then there's Liz Haywood's podcast discuss her textile industry experiences and how she's now creating Zero Waste Sewing patterns. Also listen to Clothing The Gap is a Victorian Aboriginal owned and led social enterprise.

    Megan Green Apr 12, 2021
    Show notes

Today's Sewcialists podcast is The Green Violet or Megan Green to discuss her 2021 update to the plus sized pattern companies tables she had collated in 2019. This is one of the accessibility podcasts developed for the latest Sewcialists theme month.

Make sure you listen to all the Sewcialists podcasts and stay up to date with their theme months.

Megan is a hydrologist by day, but spends most of her free time in the sewing room trying to create the perfect handmade wardrobe. She learned to sew from her mother (who learned to sew from her mother), but didn't start sewing in earnest until 2012, shortly after she moved to New Mexico and found her plus size shopping options severely limited. At that point she began sewing nearly all of her clothing and never looked back. As a self-described fitting nerd, she teaches classes in northern New Mexico, with the intent of helping people of every size make beautiful fitting and comfortable clothing. She is currently working towards a Certificate in Fashion Design and has completed coursework in pattern drafting.

Do you have any suggestions on how to repurpose a houndstooth jacket that Kate has made but now won't wear as part of Project 333? Tell us on our IG account or on the podcast blog.
