Postmodern Busking w/ Ava Luna Feb 06, 2019
    Show notes

Ava Luna is a New York City-based group so eclectic, to simply call them "indie" or "pop" or "indie pop" would do a disservice to their blend of funk, punk and electronic music. I caught up with Julian Fader (drums), Felicia Douglass (vocals/synths) and Becca Kauffman (vocals/synths, a.k.a. Jennifer Vanilla) on release day for their latest full-length Moon 2 and chatted with them about wanting more out of touring, making the most of your band's hiatus and the allure of Times Square.

    "B of the D" w/ Justine Bowe (Photocomfort, ex-Magic Man) Aug 08, 2018
    Show notes

Justine Bowe is a singer-songwriter, vocalist and keyboard player from the Boston area. She was a member of the pop group Magic Man, with whom she played some insanely huge rooms to insanely huge crowds. Now she's focusing on getting her solo project Photocomfort to the same towering heights. Or is she??? We attempt to get to the bottom of this and other mysteries, like if it's possible to separate your onstage & offstage selves, the division of labor in fulltime creative gigs and whether to identify people by what they do for work or for fun.

    MUSIC FROM THE SHOW:
Photocomfort, "Gillian Jacobs' understudy" (from Understudy)
    Photocomfort, "Hit, Run"
Photocomfort, "Holy Ropes" (from Photocomfort) RARE

"The Left-Hand Path" w/ John Snyder (Electronic Audio Experiments, Ember Wreath) Aug 01, 2018
    Show notes

John Snyder is a musician, a Ph.D candidate at Boston University and frankly to call him a tinkerer would be selling him very short. He's always comin to me talmbout "capacitors" and "resistors" and "impedances" and "headroom" and all this mumbo-jumbo, so instead of all that this is my attempt to probe for how he made a growing reputation for himself in the artisanal guitar gear community through his pedal company, Electronic Audio Experiments.

The Investors Got Spooked w/ Dylan Hanwright (Great Grandpa, ex-IKG) & Malia Seavey (Salt Lick, Dogbreth) Jul 25, 2018
    Show notes

Dylan Hanwright and Malia Seavey joined me from The Wormhole, Dylan's recording studio, show space and residence in Seattle. Dylan plays guitar in Great Grandpa and several other bands, including the recently-reformed-just-to-break-up-again I Kill Giants. Malia is a designer, screenprinter and multitalented musician who sings in Salt Lick and drums in Dogbreth. We talked about video game music, Berklee and how things get rolling until the band is bigger than you alone.

"Doc Marten Bootstraps" w/ Eric Annicchiarico (Au Revoir) Jul 18, 2018
    Show notes

Eric is the guitarist and de facto bandleader of Au Revoir, a post-rock (and by turns post-metal) band with members converging in New Jersey from far-flung corners of the US. You might know them as the band who climbed on each others' shoulders and stuck a huge dildo way up on Cloud Gate (aka The Bean) in Chicago, but you may also know them by their highly ambitious tour schedule, so we talked about going intercontinental, using your band's van as your daily driver and the oversaturation of DIY resources.

    MUSIC FROM THE SHOW:
Au Revoir, "Reverie" (from Singles EP)

A Rarely Home Companion w/ Evan Murphy & BB Bowness (Mile Twelve) Jul 11, 2018
    Show notes

And now for something completely different: Mile Twelve is a folk, bluegrass & Americana group based in Boston, but with roots all over the country and indeed the world. Massachusettsian guitarist Evan Murphy and New Zealand-raised banjo extraordinaire BB Bowness joined me at One Sellin' Out Plaza to discuss how their music is perceived differently from region to region, their decidedly un-Shatneresque cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man," and also roasting me for not knowing who Del McCoury is even though I claim to "like bluegrass."

    MUSIC FROM THE SHOW:
Mile Twelve, "Call My Soul" (from Onwards)

Mile Twelve, "The Margaret Keane" (from Onwards)
