Secret Histories of Nerd Mysteries: Ep. 34 The MPA (this one’s all about movie ratings) Feb 10, 2021

Brenda and Austin start this episode off by contemplating what Sega cameos might be in the new Sonic cartoon (Majima from Yakuza, anyone) and then deep dive into the movie rating system in the United States, the MPA. Is it really a good idea to put movie ratings in the hands of the corporations that create them? Are movies featuring Black and LGBTQ+ characters unfairly given high ratings? (the answer is yes) Is Birds of Prey the most important film of this decade? (the answer to that is also, yes).

Secret Histories of Nerd Mysteries: Ep. 32: SHoNM Goes to the Movies #4 Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street (gay Jack the Ripper) & Soul Jan 27, 2021

Show notes

"Did we almost forget to do a “Goes to the Movies” this month? Nope. While there's very little nerd news, we did watch two movies, “Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street”, which is kind of like “Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase”, except if you die in the game you die for real. Also Disney/Pixar’s “Soul” a complicated film that invokes complicated emotions and probably shouldn’t have starred Tina Fey and been released during a pandemic."
