    Episode 017 - Ready Or Not Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

When Wes Craven passed in 2015, many of us thought we would never see another "Scream" film again. However, in 2019, Paramount Pictures announced that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (who along with producer Chad Villella make up "Radio Silence") would be the new intrepid directors to direct the fifth entry in the franchise. Earlier in 2019, Matt and Tyler directed the comedic horror film "Ready or Not." The film was successful with critics and at the box office. Join Ryan to discuss "Ready or Not" in depth, and how this film could inform and foreshadow critical aspects of the new "Scream" movie. Matt Neglia, Dan Bayer, and Josh Parham appear as the panel of film critics and reunite with Ryan for the first time since his time at NextBestPicture.com.

Episode 016 – Kirby Reed and Queerness Sep 28, 2021
    Show notes

Kirby Reed became one of the most legendary characters in the "Scream" movie franchise when "Scream 4" premiered. To this day, fans are still enthralled by the performance Hayden Panettiere gave as the tomboy, somewhat androgynous horror movie lover. She was ahead of her time. Due to the fact there has never been a confirmation about the status of Kirby's attack, fans regularly debate whether she survived the ending of "Scream 4" or if she died. And "Scream 5" may not even tell us the answer and avoid the topic altogether. Join Ryan and guest TJ Finecey (host of @GothamOutsiders) to discuss Kirby the Great, a once-in-a-lifetime character.

Episode 014 – SCREAM Killers: Mickey Altieri Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

"I'm going to blame the movies. It's cool, huh? It's never been done before." The late 1990s were plagued with a debate, "Do movies encourage violence?" Scream 2 grabbed that issue by the horns and made it a centerpiece in the arc of its narrative. Mickey Altieri's motive is the most unlike any of the other six people under the Ghostface costume. He wanted to have this public debate about violence in cinema. Join Ryan and guest JJ Hodges to discuss Mickey Altieri, his motive, the public discourse, and impact of his reveal as a Ghostface killer.

    Episode 012 - Ghostface Aug 31, 2021
    Show notes

"What's a matter, Sid? It looks like you've seen a ghost." Scream is unlike other horror franchises. Whereas Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger, and Jason Voorhees are the central figures in each of their film series, "Scream" is separated because it is driven by Sidney Prescott who is haunted by Ghostface. In each film, someone new is revealed to be under the mask. Join Ryan and guest Rene Gonzalez Jr. as they discuss the antagonist at the heart of the "Scream" film series, Ghostface, and the legacy of the famous costume, killers, and voice.

    Episode 010 – Scream and Trauma Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

The horror genre oftentimes glosses over the trauma its characters experience. Or horror films depict trauma in the most extreme sense that renders the commentary useless. However, that's not the case with "Scream." Join Ryan and guest Zacary Landolt (host of "In Another World" podcast) to discuss the manner and effectiveness of the way the "Scream" series portrays trauma with its heroine, Sidney Prescott, her mother, Maureen Prescott, and other surviving characters in the series.
