How School Counselors Can Work With Difficult Principal Personalities, Part II (Narcissists and Other Fun Folks) Nov 28, 2022
    Show notes

It sometimes takes one or two different ways of approaching a difficult administrator to provide a change in perspective and develop a good working relationship with that person.
Or many of you may just need to figure out how to just get along with a difficult boss until you can find another campus to move to or different district to work in. You may not have the luxury of moving on if the school climate does not suit you.
This week we add to the profiles of the difficult personalities we discussed in episode 24 (the avoidant, histrionic, and borderline principals) to include the workaholic and narcissistic principal personalities.
Do our profiles of difficult personalities describe every administrator walking the planet? Absolutely not. Do these one dimensional descriptions describe anyone perfectly? Absolutely not. And should we attempt to diagnose our bosses in our heads? No, we should not, my friends. We should not be doing that.
But an honest look at some of these characteristics can provide us with insight as to how to make our work lives a little easier as we endeavor to serve students and families within challenging circumstances.

What Every School Counselor Wishes They Could Say to THAT Parent Nov 14, 2022
    Show notes

The longer you work in school counseling, the more you'll meet.

Disgruntled parents that CANNOT be pleased or have completely unrealistic expectations about your job scope and time.

It's frustrating when you're giving your all to serve your students but get told you're not doing enough, or you're not doing the right things.

Or worse yet, they don't tell you. They go straight to your principal.

This episode is a letter* to “THAT parent": a cathartic manifesto, straight from the heart, intended to remind you, School Counselor, that when you’re in a difficult situation, you’re not alone.
Note: This "letter" is for illustrative purposes only and is in no way intended to be a suggestion of parent communication or a depiction of any particular person.

4 Ways School Counselors Can Prepare to Effectively Help Students Through the Holidays Nov 07, 2022
    Show notes

School counselors, let's talk about how to plan ahead proactively for the holiday season.
So if you've been in school counseling for any amount of time, you know that this time of year is when things really start to get interesting.
Students may start experiencing more stressors than normal. Family relationships, financial stress, differences in routine, structure, and schedules: there are all kinds of things that go into creating holiday feelings tornadoes. And while some students handle it well, some of our students just don't.
It's always a good idea to start planning ahead for these last weeks before the end of the first semester so we can work to remain proactive during the holidays. We want to be sure that we're meeting the needs of students efficiently and effectively.

    Show notes

From the moment that you begin studying school counseling, you're told about
"comprehensive school counseling" programs. They're touted as the holy grail for school counselors: the ultimate achievement.
The problem is, there are many of you that are feeling defeated as you strive to meet all the qualifications of a truly comprehensive program, even though the statistics show it's not an attainable solution for the majority of US school counselors.
So if you're feeling "less-than" because you can't seem to get everything in order for the kind of program everyone else is saying you should be running. give this a listen. It just might change your perspective and help you see all the things you're doing RIGHT- despite the models.
