Swamp Thing Radio Season 0 – Episode 1: Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing Feb 25, 2019

Show notes

Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing may be the single most recommended comics arc for new comic readers coming to the medium as an adult. It is often referred to as "The Day that Comics Grew Up" (at least that is what Wendy calls it). Entire college courses could be (and probably have been) taught on Saga of the Swamp Thing. You can see its influence ripple throughout the industry and influence other great works like Niel Gaiman's Sandman. In this episode, Carolyn and Wendy will be introducing you to Alan Moore and how he came to write Swamp Thing after Len Wein and then they will take you through his first arc centered around some game-changing revelations about our favorite much monster and the madness of Jason Woodrue

On this very important episode Carolyn and Wendy will be covering:

The Importance of Allan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing to the Comics Industry
A brief background on the early life of Allan Moore
How Len Wein hand picked Moore to write his baby
How Allan Moore introduced concepts that formed the basis for DC's modern concept of magic
An in-depth look at
- Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 (February 1984) - The Anatomy Lesson
- Saga of the Swamp Thing #22 (March 1984) - Swamped
- Saga of the Swamp Thing #23 (April 1984) - Another Green World
- Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 (May 1984) - Roots
We will cover concepts like

- environmentalism in ways you may not expect
- the beginnings of the evolution of Abby Arcane
And you will learn everything you never wanted to know about Planarian Worms

In the episode, we promised a few links to interesting reading material

This is a great interview with Alan Moore, Len Wein and Karen Berger on how Allan Moore took over the book and what he had planned for it.
The quote from Len Wein about his first phone call to Alan Moore can be found in Alan Moore: Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman, published in 2003 by Abiogenesis

LOGLINE: When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland—only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp's mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous—and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
