DAWN: PORTRAIT OF A TEENAGE RUNAWAY with Becky Thyre — Part One! Aug 01, 2022

Show notes

It's Eve Plumb as you've never seen her before! Unless you've seen this movie, in which case you know that she has dimensions far beyond Jan Brady. Broadcast on NBC on September 27, 1976, DAWN: PORTRAIT OF A TEENAGE RUNAWAY tells the story of a 15-year-old who leaves home to and starts doing sex work. It's gritty, and guest Becky Thyre returns to help Sam decide how this film holds up almost fifty years later.

SARAH T., PORTRAIT OF A TEENAGE ALCOHOLIC with Sarah Thyre -- Part One! Jul 11, 2022

Show notes

Welcome to a new season of Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie! We're approaching the made-for-TV wonders of the 1970s a bit differently this season, and instead of gawking at the horrors of the supernatural and macabre, we are focusing on a different kind of scary movie: cautionary tales about imperiled teenagers!

To kick off the TEENAGE WASTELAND season, we're looking at 1975's SARAH T., PORTRAIT OF TEENAGE ALCOHOLIC. Who better to join Sam in the exploration of this film than a real-life Sarah T., returning guest Sarah Thyre!

PAUL LYNDE: 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS with Melissa Peterman Dec 25, 2021

Show notes

Earlier this year, Monday Afternoon Movie gifted you faithful listeners with the Paul Lynde Halloween Special, which has surely enriched your lives forever. Now, we are celebrating Christmas with yet another Paul Lynde special — one even less remembered and perhaps even less good: 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, which aired just once in 1977 and has neither re-aired nor been released to any sort of home video format. To discuss this piece of TV history, Sam is joined by Melissa Peterman — actress, comedian and Fargo's Hooker No. 2.

THE UFO INCIDENT with Scott Philbrook Dec 20, 2021

Show notes

Sam started this podcast to celebrate how bonkers made-for-TV movies could be back in the day, but this episode, about 1975's THE UFO INCIDENT, requires a different approach. In short, this movie is good. Starring two Academy Award-winners — James Earl Jones and Grandma Bev herself, Estelle Parsons — THE UFO INCIDENT tells the story of Betty and Barney Hill, real-life UFO abductees. And Sam is joined by Scott Philbrook, co-host of the Astonishing Legends podcast, to discuss how good this TV movie can be.

THE STRANGE POSSESSION OF MRS. OLIVER with Miguel Pinzon Nov 30, 2021

Show notes

The only this better than a made-for-TV thriller with Karen Black is one where she plays dual roles. Sam is joined by actor Miguel Pinzon to talk though this "supernatural or not?" entry from 1977.
