REVENGE! with Peaches Christ Apr 29, 2024

Show notes

Will Shelley Winters finally have her revenge on Sam Pancake and the Monday Afternoon Movie? Now that we're back to the horror genre, Sam has invited iconic filmmaker and confirmed cult leader Peaches Christ into the fold to talk about REVENGE!, the 1971 ABC movie of the week starring Sam's nemesis, Dame Shelley Winters, Bradford Dillman, and Stuart Whitman. In what very much feels like a precursor to the classic Stephen King story Misery, a vigilante mother will do anything to get revenge against the man who she believes is directly responsible for her daughter's untimely death. Will her plot to destroy him go too far? Will Peaches' perspective on all things Shelley finally convince Sam to show her some love? Or will Sam's deep and passionate disdain for her just grow stronger with each scene stealing blocking and each passing huff and wheeze?

THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL with Bruce Vilanch (Part 2) Jan 01, 2024

Show notes

OMG OMG OMG Bruce Vilanch! Okay, now that that is out of the way... Part two of the Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special has arrived, and it has brought with it not frankincense and myrrh, but definitely two wise men in Sam Pancake and THE legendary Bruce Vilanch. We just had to include him in any conversation revolving around the Star Wars holiday special as he was one of the writers of this "timeless" classic. 😉 Bruce also touches on some of the other greatest hits of his career, such as Mahogany, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special, and a plethora of 1970s and 1980s television variety shows with Donnie and Marie and the Brady Bunch. Also find out what Bruce thinks wookies sound like, and what Paul Lynde loved about Gene Simmons. Happy New Year (and Life Day!) from Sam Pancake and everyone at Monday Afternoon Movie & TableCakes! THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL with Tom Ford (Part 1) Dec 26, 2023

Show notes

It wouldn't quite feel like the holidays without a Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special. For that special, why not cover the infamous pinnacle of all holiday variety shows, The Star Wars Holiday Special?! The whole crew is begrudgingly and contractually back to bring a truly forgettable viewing experience to your late 1970's television sets. Mark Hamill is here as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford is back as Han Solo, and everyone's favorite space Mom Carrie Fisher is back as Princess Leia Organa. Unfortunately, they are not the main characters in any way. That title would belong to Lumpy & Itchy, the family of Chewbacca, who spend large portions of the movie grunting away about Life Day without the assisitance of subtitles. Then, just for fun, toss in a bevy of celebrity guests like Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Art Carney, Dihann Carroll, and Jefferson Starship. If you're a Star Wars fan and you've never seen it, you really should at least once... okay, maybe not. Happy holidays (and Life Day!) from Sam Pancake and everyone at Monday Afternoon Movie & TableCakes! We hope that you got to spend some time away from work and with your loved ones. Don't miss next week's part 2 with the ICONIC Bruce Vilanch!

AMITYVILLE: THE EVIL ESCAPES with Joshua Tonks (Part 1) Oct 31, 2023

Show notes

Ok y'all- for my Halloween episode(s) this year, I decided to take us on a trip to that fated Dutch Colonial Mansard-Roofed House of Horror with the Glowing Demonic Window/Eyes. I had never seen the fourth installment and first TVM iteration of the frenetic "Amityville Horror" franchise, 1989's AMITYVILLE HORROR: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka A HIDEOUS GAY LAMP IS KILLING MY FAMILY.

Y'all. Y'all!??! Y'ALL. The good news is that you can watch this jaw-dropper most anywhere: Tubi, Plex, Pluto, FreeVee, AMC+, Roku, YouTube, the CVS app, in the settings dial of a new Whirlpool dryer, if you stare long enough into a slightly spoiled container of macaroni salad from that questionable snack kiosk at the airport. The better news is that it is one of the most ridiculously hilarious, nonsensically kookoo-boots "movies" I've ever had the pleasure of covering on the pod. The best news: my guest is the delightful and deeply knowledgeable cutie- smartie Joshua Tonks, who I was a big fan of from my fave scary movie podcasts from the UK, "Evolution of Horror" and "Brain Rot." Luckily he was here in LA visiting from London this week and I snagged him in person for my 🎃 special! Yeehaw!

MAZES AND MONSTERS with Meika Grimm (Part 2) Oct 23, 2023

Show notes

Time to drop back into the satanic panic of 1982 with the second half of the Tom Hanks led TV film Mazes and Monsters, also starring Wendy Crewson and Chris Makepeace. Joining Sam again is TableCakes own Meika Grimm, editor of this very podcast. She has also edited a number of our sister podcasts, including Smart Mouth. She is an L.A. based digital creator, musician, and audio/video engineer. We return to the story with our lead Robbie experiencing vivid dreams of his missing brother Hall. After increasingly concerning behavior, including staying in character even when they aren't playing the game, he sneaks out of a party to go on a solo mission to find his long lost brother. His friends follow the clues he's left behind, Scooby Doo style, leading to our climactic finale in the heart of New York City.
