Speaking on Business: The Gateway Sep 12, 2024
    Show notes

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Originally developed as an outdoor shopping destination, which opened in 2000, The Gateway has experienced a dramatic transformation since Arizona-based developer Vestar purchased the property in 2016. General Manager Bryan Hill shares more. Bryan Hill: Since Vestar purchased The Gateway, $100 million has been invested to upgrade and revitalize the development, ultimately transitioning from a shopping center to a lifestyle destination in Salt Lake City. It has become known as a thriving hub of retail, dining, entertainment, business, and arts and culture. It also serves as an integrated campus for some of Utah’s most innovative life sciences companies, as well as Kiln, a coworking space with multiple locations in the West. The Gateway is committed to being a central gathering place by hosting more than 200 community events and cultural celebrations annually. These include everything from the Pride Festival and Festa Italiana, to July 4th and New Year’s Eve celebrations. This fall, we welcome Asher Adams, a boutique hotel that’s part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection. This stunning centerpiece is an extensive historic remodel of Union Pacific Station. So, even as The Gateway approaches its 25th year, we continue to reinvent it to ensure it stays relevant. Derek Miller: Between the announcement of the 2034 Winter Olympics and all the plans for potential further revitalization of downtown, there are some great implications for The Gateway. We will look forward to seeing the continued evolution. I’m Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: 9/10/24

Speaking on Business: Chanshare Farms Bermudagrass Sep 04, 2024
    Show notes

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Water is a precious natural resource and how we manage it today will impact nearly every aspect of our future. One way we can protect our water supply is through water wise landscaping. Eric Marble from Chanshare Farms joins us with more. Eric Marble: In Utah, water conservation is not a request, but a necessity. This is why, Chanshare Farms spent the last three years working with researchers from Brigham Young University, Utah State University, as well as other industry leaders, to delist Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass from the Noxious Weeds List. While common Bermudagrass is aggressive and remains prohibited due to its highly invasive nature, Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass is a less invasive and an excellent water-saving alternative to Bluegrass in Northern Utah. Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass does not grow from seed, which is inert, and it has several substantial benefits, including: It requires 50 percent less water than Bluegrass; It’s softer, and needs less mowing, fertilizing and maintenance; and, It’s cold tolerant to our frigid winter temperatures. Ultimately, Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass will improve our parks, sports fields, golf courses, residential landscapes dramatically. This is a win for Utah, and a win for Chanshare Farms and our efforts to preserve green space while conserving water. Derek Miller: We can all do our part when it comes to water conservation and stewardship. If you’re interested in learning more about Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass, contact Chanshare Farms today. Since 1974, Meals on Wheels has been serving Summit, Utah and Wasatch Counties, and its enduring commitment to nourishment and care has transformed it into an emblem of compassion. Board Chair Curtis Blair joins us with more. Curtis Blair: Thanks, Derek. Meals on Wheels’ mission is to improve the health and quality of life for our homebound seniors while fostering independence and ensuring no one is left hungry or isolated. Did you know that we serve over 1,300 meals daily and almost 250,000 meals annually through home delivery and in partnership with area senior centers. We’re pleased to participate in the national Meals on Wheels America END THE WAIT campaign. In our service region alone, we currently have nearly 300 qualified homebound seniors waiting for nutritious hot meals and social interaction because of budget constraints. We are in desperate need of new sponsors, partners, and individual donations to help us meet our mission of improving health and quality of life for ALL of our homebound seniors. Food is medicine, and we believe so is companionship. Together we can ensure that those in need receive both. Waiting lists for this program should not exist. To help us END THE WAIT, please contact us today. All donations stay here locally in our Utah service region. Derek Miller: Meals on Wheels has become a vital lifeline for those in need. Speaking on Business: PACS Aug 01, 2024
    Show notes

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Ten years ago, Utahns Jason Murray and Mark Hancock founded PACS, a post-acute health care company. In April PACS launched a successful IPO on the New York Stock Exchange and now has 275 facilities in 14 states. PACS’s VP of communication Brooks Stevenson tells us more. BROOKS STEVENSON: PACS is revolutionizing the delivery, leadership, and quality of post-acute care nationally. We started PACS because we felt there was a better way to provide quality care in the post-acute health care sector. And as we execute on our mission, we are making a tremendous difference in the lives of the most vulnerable population in our country. We’ve taken decades of hands-on experience in post-acute care and translated that into a model that greatly reduces administrative burdens for our leadership teams; we do the heavy lifting on the business side, which gives our local teams more time to focus on the care, well-being, and quality of life of their patients and their employees. PACS elevates the delivery of local health care by providing technological and human resources, tools, and guidance, and empowering facility leaders and their teams to make local decisions based on patient needs. It’s a simple philosophy that healthcare is local, and the focus on care is our top priority. DEREK MILLER: Utah is a leader in healthcare services and technology. PACS is a national leader in skilled nursing and post-acute care. The combination of PACS business model and Utah’s healthcare talent provides a ready solution to the challenges facing the industry.
