Speaking on Business: Utah Education Association Aug 07, 2026
    Show notes

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. As Utah's largest organization representing public educators, the Utah Education Association works to strengthen public schools, support educators and advocate for students. Serving her second term as president of the Utah Education Association, Renée Pinkney joins us with more. Renée Pinkney: UEA represents nearly 18,000 public educators who choose to belong to our union because we believe every Utah student deserves a strong public school and a real chance to succeed. Educators know what that takes. Students need manageable class sizes, enough support and experienced educators who can afford to stay in the profession. Our members bring that commitment into schools every day. The UEA backs them up by fighting for the funding, voice and classroom conditions that make student success possible. That means advocating for policies and resources that strengthen Utah’s public schools, support educators and help students succeed in every community across the state. It also means ensuring educators have a voice in the decisions that shape their profession, their classrooms and the success of the students they serve. At UEA, we believe every student deserves a strong public school and every educator deserves the respect and support to make that happen. Derek Miller: By giving educators a voice and supporting strong public schools, the Utah Education Association is investing in Utah's future generation of learners. To learn more, visit myUEA.org. Speaking on Business: Thanksgiving Point Jul 30, 2026
    Show notes

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. For over 25 years, Thanksgiving Point has been one of Utah’s most beloved destinations, but its mission goes deeper than a fun day out. CEO, McKay Christensen, shares how they’re making hands-on STEM learning accessible to every child in our state. McKay Christensen: In Utah, 31 percent of kids from high-income households will go on to work in higher-paying STEM jobs, while only 7 percent of low-income kids will do the same. Closing that gap means hundreds of thousands of Utah’s kids can lift themselves from the cycle of poverty. And to help, Thanksgiving Point conducts 200 STEM labs and programs each week across its museums and science centers. Our goal is to bring hands-on STEM learning to all Utah’s kids. That’s why children whose families receive SNAP or WIC benefits can visit our STEM labs, museums and science centers for free. We’re building, by the way, a new Children’s Technology Center in Lehi, where the next generation can explore the tech shaping Utah’s future in industries like aerospace and energy and biotech and fin tech. So I guess it’s true, Thanksgiving Point is where curious kids grow. Derek Miller: Thanksgiving Point welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors each year, but its greatest impact is inspiring Utah’s next generation of innovators, problem solvers and leaders. Learn more by visiting ThanksgivingPoint.org. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: 7/30/26

    Show notes

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. For more than 40 years, Copic has supported health care professionals with medical liability insurance, education and patient safety resources, helping strengthen care for Utah communities. Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Beverly Razon, joins us with more. Beverly Razon: At Copic, we know that a thriving business economy relies on access to a strong healthcare network for its workforce and customers. Utah ranks among the highest states in the nation for employee-sponsored health insurance. That is a big investment into the health of the state. For this reason, Copic believes partnering with Utah’s business and healthcare communities is imperative to ensuring quality and stability. Working together, businesses can thrive and healthcare professionals can focus on patient care. As part of our long-term commitment to Utahns, every year we honor a Utah physician who generously volunteers their time in their community with the Copic Humanitarian Award. On their behalf, we donate $10,000 to a local nonprofit of the physician’s choice, strengthening local organizations who need it most. We’re here to support the humans of healthcare: for you, for the greater business community and for stable healthcare. Learn more about us at copic.com. Derek Miller: By supporting healthcare professionals and investing in Utah communities, Copic continues to strengthen the state's healthcare system.
