During that fist year of recording at Studio K, those lyrics from the 1985 Black Uhuru song "Fit you Haffe Fit" had become a mantra, a catch phrase at the studio to always be alert, aware, attuned to both mentally and physically. Now that Henry K and Bigga Staar are venturing into the world of Dancehall Music, those lyrics are more useful than ever.

In the music business when a band or group releases a greatest hits project it usually marks the beginning of the end, unless you're the Eagles, but we are still early in the story. Maya Angelou said it best "You really can't know where you are going until you know where you've been." As we move forward to the next chapters in the Rootsland Saga scheduled for release in early December, things are gonna get pretty intense in Kingston. So after 50 + chapters we figured this would be the right time to reminisce and look back at some of our favorite moments, music and people that helped inspire the story up until now.

By 1994 Henry K had started to earn his stripes in the business, after spending years as a foot soldier patrolling the streets and lurking the studios of Kingston town. in addition to hustling "Henry K"records out of the trunk of his Neva, he partnered up with friend and producer Delroy "Dr. Marshall" Harrison, Gussie Clarke’s hotshot young engineer to form a dancehall label called "One Up Music." However, Henry's greatest accomplishment was a co-production that occurred outside the studio, and would change his life forever.

Xtabi was a secluded paradise , where the Arawaks lived in harmony with "the land of Wood and Water..." a land they inhabited for thousands of years and felt a deep spiritual connection with. Blood and Fire Chapter 5: "Outta Road" (In the Street) Aug 23, 2022

Dancehall culture and the street dances that inspired it can be traced back the 1950’s to poorest and most marginalized areas in Kingston. Attended by residents who lived on gully banks and sustained themselves by sifting through garbage dumps. These were people so broke couldn't afford to go out on the town, and frankly weren’t invited , or wanted at the party. So they threw their own inner city street dances that became safe spaces within the concrete jungles, where underprivileged youth could converge and express their individuality through music fashion art and, dancing. Free from a judgmental middle class and popular culture that looked down on the ghettos viewed them as a depraved underworld on the fringes of society. .

Once the phone started ringing at Brian & Henry's "Dread & Breakfast" their quiet spot in the hills became the Kingston base for dozens of reggae tourists from all over the globe. Music business people, journalists, singers, musicians. Most of them very dedicated to the genre looking to contribute music’s international growth and brand, others, Not so Much. These were selfish, self cent “so called” artists, who were all about themselves, traveling to the island in search of fame and fortune and willing to do whatever it took to achieve it. This was the new dancehall "mix tape" generation that grew up on a cliff note version of the music and new nothing of the genres history

Hanging out on a dusty, hot New Kingston street corner breathing in taxi exhaust fumes surrounded by street youth juggling dime bags of sinsemilla, isn't exactly listed as an attraction in the Jamaican guidebooks. Yet, Brian and Henry are quickly learning that hanging on the corner is where 90% of Jamaican life take place. its where culture and politics and music and art, joy and pain all collide and creates a terrestrial big bang that gives the streets a life of their own.

As Henry and Brian are touching down, in Kingston so is an army of foreign invaders. Record Companies, music executives, publishers, mangers all looking to cash in on dancehall's recent waive of international popularity, Most were opportunists looking to take advantage of what they perceived as uneducated 3rd world artistes. Yet as greedy and ruthless as these international companies were, they had no idea of what kind of resistance they would encounter when they reached the island’s tropical shores. The Jamaican establishment, the same power hungry consortium that controlled the Islands resources and products for centuries, they also saw in dancehall as a commodity, they could exploit.

By contrast, there stood Henry, a 25 year old entry level t shirt salesman, anxiously awaiting a chance to break into the music business, full of ideas, and optimism... about to come face to face with the one person capable of making it all happen. In the Spring of 1991, Henry drives from Kingston to Ochos Rios in order to attend a concert hosted by Sister Rita Marley commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Bob Malrey's passing. For the Kush Danai, the Rasta in the passenger seat the only thing on his mind was the murder of his friend Peter Tosh. Henry tries to keep the conversation upbeat, but Kush is concerned and justifiably so... reggae music and it's artistes are under assault.

On a dark New York City afternoon all Henry can see is Sunshine in Soho, as he develops an instant crush on the beautiful woman who runs the Island Trading Retail store.

Moving to Kingston, Jamaica in 1991, they rented a house in the hills of Armour Heights, turning it into an artistic sanctuary that attracted talent from all over. Amidst this vibrant mix of culture and music, Brian immersed himself in the life of Kingston's ghettos, offering respect and recognition to the disenfranchised, until his untimely death from an overdose in 1997.

The conversation shifts to the origins of the narrator Henry K's love for reggae music, tracing back to his teenage years in the US Virgin Islands, where he discovered a profound connection with reggae. This passion followed him to Washington, DC, where a fortuitous encounter with a reggae CD produced by Doctor Dread led him to an internship at RAS Records.
