Jordan Buckley (Every Time I Die) May 11, 2022

Show notes

Jordan Buckley has made me laugh more than most anyone I know... I rarely get to hang with the dude these days, but I can still put on ANY Every Time I Die record and just laugh at how hilariously heavy and unrelenting that band was. I was always envious of his playing, his energy, and his artistic talents aside from guitar.

This is a truly great conversation with Jordan about all things ETID, all this post ETID, all things that pushed and inspired ETID, working with Kurt Ballou, his work with John Taffer, his love of Buthole Surfers, Slayer, and Converge... But, most importantly how the impact of that band's legacy has impacted his life since its demise, how he processed the very public dissolve and what he's done to pick himself back up.

In addition to new music in the works with 3 former ETID dudes, Jordan has launched an insane cameo page that you should check out, and a hub for all of his projects from art to airbnb!

Head over to https://jordanbuckley.xyz/ for all things Jordan. From Shirts, to original art prints, to Every Time I Die tour posters, and more. Not a bit of shinfo to be found on that page.

Filmmaker Riley Stearns (Dual, The Art of Self Defense, Faults) Apr 08, 2022

Show notes

Riley Stearns is a writer, director, jiu jitsu brown belt, metal-head, gear dork, cold brew addict, and so much more. His feature debut "Faults" was a nice introduction to what would become one of the most unique voices in film today. His follow-up, "The Art of Self Defense" is a movie that Ross regularly credits as the film that made him laugh the hardest he has ever laughed in a theater.

Riley has now arrived at his third feature "DUAL", which might be his most signature film to date. It debuted at Sundance, and will be available in theaters April 15th. It's the existential black comedy we all need.

Riley joins Ross and Ian to talk about the creative process behind "Dual", honing his unique dialogue, working with folks like Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan, working with Emma Ruth Rundle, building the Full of Hell cinematic universe, and so much more.

Scott Crawford (Salad Days, Creem: America's Only Rock and Roll Magazine) Apr 02, 2022

Show notes

Long before Scott's instagram handle had me laughing my ass off every day, he put out a documentary called "Salad Days" which took an in-depth look at one of (if not THE) most important music scene's in US history. We talk in depth about his process and approach to this film, his evolution as a teenage fan to collaborator with heroes like Ian MacKaye, Wayne Kramer, Brian Baker, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl, and beyond. How his love of music journalism helped him capture the magic of Creem magazine in his follow-up documentary: "Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine", all the way through his new project that sounds simply incredible.

If you are a fan of Minor Threat, Bad Brains, MC5, and real music then this episode is for you.

Philip Jamieson (Caspian, Dreamtigers, and The Movie Loft podcast) Returns Mar 11, 2022

Show notes

Philip Jamieson of Caspian and Dreamtigers RETURNS for one of the nerdiest episodes to date. We talk about all the nerdy gear that goes into some Caspian riffs, their upcoming vengeance tour, and most fascinatingly: how Caspian goes about sequencing their albums. Why is that last one so crucial? Because we are talking in depth about some nerdy comic book characters in film. Not necessarily the best comic book films, but the best representation of comic book characters in film.

As a bassist, Phil has proven himself to be VERY qualified to talk about film. But as part of an instrumental band, he doesn't have too much to say about comics... This means that he is giving Ian and Ross the task of fitting their choices into HIS sequencing demands. Nerdy enough for you? All of this makes Phil an incredibly welcome addition to the cast on this episode! We talk X-men, Batman, Superman, Scott Pilgrim, and so much more.

If you are a casual fan or a film obsessive, you will love to hear these dudes (whose only qualifications are playing bass) chat about all things film in this very special episode of Film Basics with Bassists That Love Film AFTER a good old fashioned interview.

Be sure to keep up with all things Philip via @caspianofficial @dreamtigersmusic and his own film podcast @themovieloftpodcast on instagram and be sure to check out Caspian as they embark on some long-overdue tour dates.

To hear us get hyper-specific about gear, take a deep dive into unlocking some Chase Bliss Audio stuff, go DEEP in Phil's analysis of the new "The Batman" film, and hear what we would LOVE to see Matt Reeves further explore in this franchise, the extended version of this conversation is available at www.patreon.com/rigsofdad, OR just download the Patreon ap, search for Rigs of Dad, and you can support creators like me and so many more in the process!

"The Batman" Mar 11, 2022

Show notes

Nat Coghlan returns to discuss the Matt Reeves masterpiece matt'sterpiece, "The Batman", in depth. What worked? What didn't? Is Robert Pattinson the best Batman so far? 'Sup with the Riddler? Was it too dark? Was there a Bane Juice cameo? Was that another cameo? Is this the best batman film thus far? How many strings does this comic adaptation earn? Three bassists basically cover all the bases in this four-string-banger of an episode.

"Don't Cut Out the Editor" - A Celebration of Film Editing Mar 02, 2022

Show notes

The Academy has sadly decided to several categories from the Oscar Broadcast, and it's just a bummer. We've covered the magic of film scores in depth with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc) in a previous episode, and no we are celebrating the art of editing with a selection of films that we find to be great examples of art in editing.

All of your favorite films, songs, shows, and stories are the result of sold editing. Sometimes the editing of a film is just as important as the script and the direction. We talk about how it's used to enhance scope in storytelling, how it's used to amplify the scares in horror, and how it is one of the best comedic devices in comedy. We discuss the works of Kubrick, Fincher, Nolan, Adam McKay, and more.

If you want to hear the UNEDITED version of this chat, you can hear that and so much more over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon. This also includes extended interviews with my guests like Kurt Ballou (Converge), Greg Edwards (Failure, Autolux), and much more. Plus you will hear us talk about some movie news of the week and review films like the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Kimi, and more.

Kurt Ballou is a name with a resume as heavy as his tones. When he is not ripping riffs for Converge, or working the board at God City Studio, he is building pedals and guitars for God City Instruments. The dude does it all and does it incredibly well. Thrilled to talk to him about all things Converge, the process behind Blood Moon, recording techniques, guitar builds, effects, and some new technology that he has birthed into the music world.
