But this isn’t just a one-sided conversation – I will also be interviewing other teachers, education policy experts, and others to get their perspectives on what’s happening in our schools. Our guest, TB, a student at Madison High School, offers a firsthand account of what life has been like since the TEA took over their school district, implementing policy changes that disproportionately affect schools in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, particularly those with predominantly students of color.

TB sheds light on the administration's treatment of students, which has been marked by inconsistency and lack of empathy. He discusses how teachers are being bullied by the administration, and how these dynamics are contributing to a loss of passion for learning among the student body.

We challenge the narrative perpetuated by the media, which often portrays the students as entitled troublemakers throwing tantrums over their phones. TB provides insight into the deeper issues at play and emphasizes that the protest is about more than just cell phones—it's about students demanding respect, dignity, and a voice in their own education.

S2, Ep. 14 PT2- CPS Stories:The Realities of the Child Welfare System Jan 21, 2024

Continuing our conversation with B. Drake, a seasoned professional in the field of child welfare with years of experience. He goes deeper into the stories about kids finding their way through state custody and foster homes. In this segment he discusses the privatization of foster care, which ironically sounds like the privatization of prison...Which then leads us to acknowledge that just like the school to prison pipeline exists, so does the CPS to prison pipeline! We discuss residential treatment facilities who want the kids with the highest needs/level of care because they benefit more from them financially. When those kids start to improve those behaviors and no longer need "high care", they are sometimes removed from those facilities because those facilities can't benefit from them financially.
We again touch on how kids are placed in foster homes with parents who just view them as a paycheck and isolate them from the rest of the family. We talk about a young man who experienced this isolation after having an extremely rough life of neglect, only to be sexually abused once he entered into the system by the very foster parents that were supposed to care for him.
We also discuss educational surrogates and their impact on students with IEPs in the school and court system.
This was definitely a tear-jerker episode that I had to cut short because the truth was a bit too truthful for me. Tune in and let's hear your thoughts!

So, buckle up for laughter, real talk, and a glimpse into the unfiltered lives of teachers as we break the mold and go beyond the classroom on this rollercoaster of an episode.
And in the midst of it all, we confront the desire to shed the title of a role model for students, particularly when there's no increase in pay.

We’re jumping right into his journey, starting with how he got into the world of school psych.
We’re not skirting around the issues. Dr. McClure discusses the culture of low expectations that often shackles Black students, the hesitation to set high standards, and the unfortunate trend of overassessing and placing Black students in special education.
Dr. McClure shares his insights on helping parents understand the often confusing process of special education, connecting certain behaviors to disabilities, and shining a light on the high number of Black boys being written up by teachers who might be lacking a bit in the cultural awareness department.
Dr. McClure drops the details on his creation—an app that’s not just about identifying, but actively combating discipline disparities. And because he’s not just about the issues, but also about solutions, we dive into his passion for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and its powerful impact on Black boys.

In this episode we are discussing the stories of black women teachers who have faced profound trauma under the guidance of black women principals. We will be taking some of my most recent a TikTok videos and turning them into a raw hour-plus conversation that will leave you inspired and enlightened.
Our guests, experienced educators who have been in the field for years, openly share their experiences, and the emotional and mental toll of navigating the rocky relationships with their educational leaders. We delve into the heart-wrenching moments where these leaders, who were expected to nurture and guide, instead became sources of anguish, pushing educators to the brink and causing them to question if this career was really for them. We explore the broader impact as well- how these leaders have the potential to negatively shape the lives of the young girls on their campuses.
But within the heartbreak, there is healing. This episode becomes a therapeutic space for these teachers to vent, release, and ultimately let go of the trauma that has haunted them. These educators reclaim their strength and rediscover their passion for shaping young minds.

We get into the importance of self-awareness and community involvement in the success of our schools. We discuss the privilege some parents/communities have in being able to focus on the schooling/education of their kids, while others struggle to meet basic necessities. We touch on the importance of freedom of choice in education and potential limitations that come with attending schools within specific zones. We emphasize the power of community collaboration, pooling resources like finances, community support, and education. We discuss how voting and community activities can vary based on work circumstances and neighborhood disparities.

Y'all know we gotta discuss HISD and the crucial work of the Houston Federation of Teachers (HFT), a remarkable association fighting for teachers' rights. We explore recent activities of the HFT and their possible motivations, including their involvement with Mike Miles and his controversial moves with the takeover of Houston ISD.
As we analyze the impact of demographic changes and gentrification in schools, we stress the need for action beyond simply talking about issues. We address a recent video featuring a parent's complaint about a poster promoting inclusivity in a first-grade classroom and offer our insights.

Additionally, we discuss the recent cancellation of a Friday football game and extracurricular activities in Marlin ISD due to academic underperformance. In this "Quickie" episode, I am back to thank my incredible audience for their support, as we prepare to kick off the school year in just a few weeks. Let's talk mental health in Black boys! Our guests, Mr. Egbo, The Counseling Coach, and The Good Doc, join us to discuss the challenges faced by Black boys and their parents when seeking therapy and support. One of the major issues highlighted is the lack of representation of Black male therapists, making it difficult for families to find someone who understands their unique experiences. Additionally, the high cost of therapy and the limited availability of therapists who accept insurance further hinder access to mental health services.
We also explore the limitations of school counselors, who are often overwhelmed with various responsibilities, leaving them with little time for providing adequate support to students. We also discuss recognizing signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and ADHD in boys.
The episode also goes into the importance of addressing societal issues, particularly regarding African American students. We highlight the need for African American students to be both academically successful and true to themselves. our guests share their personal experiences of facing racism and the need to hide their expressive self in certain spaces, showing the impact of societal attitudes on mental health.

Episode 13: Empowering Educators: Recognizing Workplace Bullying, Harassment, and Discrimination Jul 09, 2023

On this episode of Ridgemont4sFinest-The Podcast, we get into the topic of unlawful termination, workplace bulling, harassment, discrimination, and the challenges of fighting against them. With our guest, Tai WES from Workforce Equity Solutions, we discuss examples such as a paraprofessional who faced discrimination and harassment from their white female administrator. This administrator made derogatory comments and created a hostile work environment, retaliating against the paraprofessional for reporting the behavior. We raise the question of what options educators (and other employees) have when they experience retaliation for lodging a complaint against an administrator/supervisor.
We explore the protections offered by the Civil Rights Act and the EEOC process for those experiencing discrimination or harassment. Documentation becomes a crucial piece of evidence in these cases, and we discuss the importance of documenting incidents and conversations, as well as keeping records of who was present during these situations. Tai from Workforce Equity Solutions, explains how to recognize and define workplace bullying and harassment, further empowering our listeners with information on handling workplace issues.
We also shed light on the challenges faced by Texas teachers, who lack strong union representation and often have only one person assigned to handle grievances for multiple teachers. We advise teachers to read contracts carefully, while also emphasizing the need to understand and adhere to policies and regulations to protect oneself from potential ammunition that could be used against them. Additionally, we explore cases of microaggressions experienced by black women and black men in the workplace, showcasing examples of discriminatory treatment and questioning whether these situations can be considered discrimination.
Throughout the episode, we stress the importance of proper documentation, advising listeners not to turn over original documents to HR and instead recommending the use of electronic copies and Google Docs. We also suggest blind copying personal email addresses in email exchanges related to potential issues, as a precaution to ensure access to important evidence.
