Episode #266: 'Angel' 5x19 and 5x20 - Illyria and the Immortal May 30, 2018

Show notes

Join ReWatchable as we get even closer to the end with our discussion of Angel 5x19, "Time Bomb," and 5x20, "The Girl in Question."
Superfan: Karen and Natalie
Newbies: Ariana and Kristen
Fun Facts:
Kristen binged The Bold Type this week and blew up Karen's Twitter mentions. Natalie enjoyed "The Girl in Question" more than ever due to her having actually been to Rome, now. Ariana watched the trailer for the Charmed reboot and is really excited. Karen's first big city trip was to Rome, and it might have been a little rough at first.
Angel season 5, episode 19, "Time Bomb":
-Synopsis
-Gunn is rescued by Illyria and now Angel "owes her one."
-There is a leak of some timey wimey stuff that is causing Illyria to short circuit, and will eventually explode.
-In the first timeline, Illyria dusts Spike... and then everyone else. Were the newbies concerned for him?
-If they would have killed Illyria after all this build up, it would have felt anti-climactic.
-Illyria is the oldest character in the Buffy-verse.
-Wes lies to Angel about what the weapon would do to Illyria.
-We know why Wes is still attached to Illyria, but how does Illyria feel about Wes?
-She seems to want to make him feel better, i.e. rescuing Gunn.
-The end of this episode feels so off as Angel agrees to sign off on that woman's child becoming a demon sacrifice later in life.
-We have a lot of thoughts about Angel's true motivations. Is this totally guilt driven, or is there an altruistic streak in him?
-Favorite Scenes
-Favorite Lines
-Fun fact: The pregnant lady in this episode is David Boreanaz's real world wife!
Angel season 5, episode 20, "The Girl in Question":
-Synopsis
-Andrew may have been supposed to be Dawn in this episode. That makes a lot of sense.
-An episode all about Buffy, but we never actually see her.
-#Readthecomics totally comes into play here, but we'll get into that more once the season is over.
-Illyria totally taps into Fred's memories and pretends to be her while Fred's parents visit.
-No matter your feelings about Illyria, Amy Acker is phenomenal in this episode.
-Is Illyria a better match for Wes than Fred would have been?
-Time to go to Italy!
-Does Buffy know Spike is alive?
-We have issues with doing an episode about Buffy where we never actually see her.
-Flashbacks show a time where Spike and Angel were actually friendly. And we liked it!
-Wolfram & Hart, Italian edition with a lovely director.
-No demon war! Yay!

Show notes

Join ReWatchable as we discuss Angel 5x15, "A Hole in the World," and Angel 5x16 "Shells."
Superfan: Karen and Maj
Newbies: Danielle?? and Kristen
Fun Facts:

Maj is all about Eurovision (with just a teensy bit of hockey talk). Kristen is mourning the loss of April Kepner on Grey's Anatomy. Danielle?? is staying in her apartment for another year, so, YAY! And Karen got to interview a guy from Tremors and she's not sure if Brittany is talking to her anymore.
Angel season 5, episode 15, “A Hole in the World” and episode 16, “Shells”:
-Kristen shares her long held spoiler-ific secret.
-We all reflect on Fred's death.
-Why was Fred's death so similar to Cordy's?
-Flashback Fred was so charming and sweet.
-That transition was on fire.
-Nox is super evil and we didn't necessarily see him coming. Okay, well, some of us did.
-Thoughts on WesiFred
-This is a new shade of Dark Wesley.
-More thoughts on Wes and Fred's relationship.
-You really don't want to cross Lorne.
-We all talk about why we like either "A Hole in the World" or "Shells" more.
-Drogyn does not like being asked questions.
-Angel makes a choice that is definitely a VERY tough one.
-Fred's death is a really, really tough pill to swallow.
-Illyria's look: Love it, hate it, annoyed by it?
-We have a little criticism for the sexualization of the ladies in the last few episodes.
-Did Gunn deserve to get stabbed?
-Wes shoots Nox and we're upset about it, but probably not for the reasons you'd think.
-The final scene with Wes and Fred is some incredible acting from Amy Acker. #alltheawards
-Lorne blames himself for not hearing Nox's betrayal when he heard him sing. We don't blame him at all.
-Danielle?? asks a very good question about the First Evil, Jasmine, and the old gods.
-Karen and Maj do their best to answer it without leading the newbies anywhere.
-Is Illyria this season's big bad?

Superfan: Natalie, Caitlin and Maj
Newbies: Brittany
Fun Facts:
Maj sticks with a hockey update as her team won last night and she cried! Go sports!! Brittany is having a very bad allergy attack, but she saw Paul Rudd, Martin Short, Zachary Quinto and Ben Stiller at a bar on Friday so that's fun. Natalie is in NYC, too, seeing a bunch of shows and saw Lee Pace's penis (in Angels in America). Caitlin can see the end of the semester!!
Angel season 5, episode 13, “Why We Fight”:

Maj is rating things in Infinity Stones now. Mitch is afraid of Rotten Tomatoes. Ariana is overwhelmed. Karen saw Cursed Child and it was a breathtaking piece of bulls#!t.
Angel season 5, episode 11, “Damage”:
-Quick notes!
-This whole episode was kind of a blur tbh.
-There are some uncomfortable racial undertones in the way Angel and Wes treat Gunn.
-Minorities stick together!
-Mitch thinks Wes collects trophies.
-Did any of these writers watch season 7 of Buffy?

Superfan: Caitlin and Natalie
Newbies: Mitch and Brittany
Fun Facts:
Mitch went to a thrift store to VHS shop, as you do, and he found the ENTIRE Gilmore Girls DVD box set for $6. SIX. DOLL. HAIRS. Lettuce talk about... lettuce? Brittany is loving the lettuce puns to result from an E. coli outbreak. Natalie rode a horse and knows a lot about riding styles and is apparently living Jurassic Park. Caitlin is working through some bad foot pain (sad).
Angel season 5, episode 9, “Harm's Way”:

-Who would have thought we would have this Harmony episode this many years later?

Danielle ?? took herself to see Blockers. Kristen is obsessed with converting all her old favorite movies to digital copies (legally). Natalie has a nose ring (and a terrifying story about how it was done) that Karen had never seen, and Natalie is gonna get Karen one at SDCC. -DruSpAng flashback time!
-Spike and Angel have a long, complicated relationship.

-Buffy would have put them both in time out after their insulting comments about her.
-Angel might handle the burden of being human again better, in all honesty.
-Everyone is losing it at Wolfram & Hart.
-We felt icky about the Spike/Harmony sex.
-Angel and Spike fight over the cup... and it ends up being full of Mountain Dew. Wait, what?!
-And then the bigger twist... Eve and Lindsay are shacking up?!
-The newbies definitely didn't see it coming.
-Didn't Lindsay and Angel leave things on good terms before?
