335- MYSTERY MEN with Tom McGee Aug 01, 2018

Show notes

Don your capes and polish your forks, this week we fight evil with the MYSTERY MEN, the 1999 send up of superhero movies starring Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria and Janeane Garofalo as the most hopeless superhero team since, uh, Zack Snyder's Justice League. Released in the wake of the Batman & Robin, this movie bombed despite its star studded cast including Tom Waits, Oscar Winner Geoffrey Rush and Pee-Wee. We loved this movie when we weren't saturated with superheros and comic book adaptations, but how does it hold up today?

334- MEN IN BLACK Jul 25, 2018

Show notes

*FLASH* This week we are not talking about MEN IN BLACK, the 1997 sci-fi action comedy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. You will forget this movie was ever directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, that Linda Fiorentino and Vincent D'Onofrio appear in it. Also, Rip Torn, who you will forget we thought was dead. This was movie was never a favorite of ours because it never existed, but if it did exist and we did rewatch it, how would it hold up now?

333- REVENGE OF THE NERDS Jul 18, 2018

Show notes

Grab your pocket protector, this week we suffer REVENGE OF THE NERDS, the 1984 comedy starring Anthony Edwards and Robert Carradine as a four-eyed nerds who set out to turn the tables on the bullies, jocks and frat boys and show the world that there's nothing wrong with being a nerd-- except for all the toxic, awful things that nerds do. Also featuring Timothy Busfield, John Goodman and the guy who voiced Leonardo in the Ninja Turtle movies (NERD), this movie gave a voice to pale, socially inept and awkward, but how does it hold up today?

332- THE BODYGUARD Jul 11, 2018

Show notes

With the Whitney Houston documentary Whitney in cinemas, we decided it was a good time to revisit THE BODYGUARD, the 1992 romantic thriller starring Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston, Bill Cobbs, and one of the bad guys from Dumb & Dumber. Also, I think Whitney may sing a song in it! No such luck for fans of Kevin Costner's musical œuvre. It's a movie where duty and passion are crossed like two samurai swords, or maybe a samurai sword and a tv camera-gun. This movie intrigued us as a very adult movie when we were younger, but how does it hold up today?

331- NATIONAL TREASURE Jul 04, 2018

Show notes

Happy Birthday America! It's July 4th and we're talking about NATIONAL TREASURE, the 2004 adventure heist film starring Nic Cage as an idealistic patriot who needs to steal the declaration of independence before his buddy Sean Bean does. Also there are freemasons! And clues! And Diane Kruger. And Christopher Plummer for one scene, who is a Canadian National Treasure.

Some of us loved this movie when it was first released, but how does it hold up now?

Also, don't forget about our screening of MY GIRL at the Royal Cinema in Toronto, July 4th, 2018. Get tickets here!

330- FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF Jun 27, 2018

Show notes

It's the end of the school year and this week we're skipping class to stay home and rewatch FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, the 1986 teen comedy directed by John Hughes and starring Matthew Broaderick as the titular Ferris Bueller as well as Alan Ruck and Mia Sara as two characters who aren't in the title, despite also taking the day off. We loved this movie when we were too young to have fully formed concepts of responsibility, but how does it hold up now?

Also, don't forget about our screening of MY GIRL at the Royal Cinema in Toronto, July 4th, 2018. Get tickets here!

329- SCREAM 3 with Alexandra West Jun 20, 2018

Show notes

Lights! Camera! Scream! This week Alexandra West joins us to talk about SCREAM 3, a movie she argues takes on a new light following the #MeToo movement and the allegations against Harvey Weinstein (who was a producer on this film, ugh). Starring Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, a magical vocoder, David Arquette and Parker Posey, we thought this movie was a scream (haha) when we were younger, but how does it hold up today?

Also buy and read Alex's book The 1990s Teen Horror Cycle: Final Girls and a New Hollywood Formula and hear her on her own podcast Faculty of Horror!

328- TRUE LIES with Johnnie Walker Jun 13, 2018

Show notes

Believe it or not, this week we're telling TRUE LIES! It's the 1994 action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a spy and Jamie Lee Curtis as his wife who doesn't realize he's a spy! Also Tom Arnold is there to remind you how mad you still are about the Roseanne reboot debacle. This movie combines two of Hollywood's favorite things; lying to a spouse and blowing up terrorists. We loved True Lies when we were younger, but how does it hold up now?

327- OCEAN'S ELEVEN Jun 06, 2018

Show notes

In anticipation of Ocean's 8, the spin-off now hitting theaters, we harken back to where it all began (again) with OCEAN'S ELEVEN! This 1999 Steven Soderbergh heist flick, a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack picture, was a real hit with audiences for its one-two combo of charming movie stars and grand larceny. Featuring Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Bernie Mac and Amal Clooney's husband, this movie had everything (if by everything you mean celebrities and a heist) but how does it hold up now?

326- DOUBLE JEOPARDY May 30, 2018

Show notes

"A 1999 thriller starring Ashley Judd predicated on a law stating a person may not be charged with the same crime twice."

"What is DOUBLE JEOPARDY?"

"That is correct. You have the board."

"I'll take movies that are a Rip-Off of The Fugitive for $200."

"This actor just can't help himself from helping people wrongfully accused of murder."

"Who is Tommy Lee Jones?"

"Correct. Final clue. You thought this movie was thrilling when you were younger, but how does it hold up now?"
