Expat in Mexico Update - Renting a Home in Mexico and Why It's a Good First Step #287 Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Description:

In this episode, I will be talking about renting a property in Mexico. I will discuss some of the pitfalls and why you probably should rent for a significant amount of time before you decide to buy.

I am not a lawyer but I suggest you get acquainted with one if you plan to apply for residency and to review any legal documents you will be signing including a lease.

A lot of people assume that engaging with a lawyer will be expensive, but it is not, and decide to do this themselves. They often turn to Facebook groups looking for advice. This is an area where learning about other people's experiences is valuable but getting legal advice is not. The legal advice you get is worth as much as you are paying for it. Nothing.

I learned a lot from my lawyer when he reviewed my first lease. You have to remember that what you know about property laws and your rights in the US has nothing to do with how it is done outside of the US.

Rebroadcast of Future Proof: Reinventing Work in the Age of Acceleration with Diana Wu David #286 Sep 05, 2022
    Show notes

    Description:

This podcast episode is being released on the US Labor Day holiday. Therefore, I am rebroadcasting an episode where I spoke with Diana Wu David who is the author of Future Proof: Reinventing Work in an Age of Acceleration. If you have listened to this podcast long enough, you have heard me discuss a number of concepts that I attribute to Diana and her book.

Read you her about section on LinkedIn:

I am a former Financial Times executive, author of Future Proof: Reinventing Work in an Age of Acceleration, and an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School's EMBA Global Asia. I started out my career working on high-level strategy as a management consultant and as an assistant to Dr. Henry Kissinger at Kissinger Associates in New York.

I work with global leaders, companies, and boards to enhance their ability to adapt, contribute, collaborate and grow. I am privileged to have consulted with or spoken to clients including the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, the World Bank, Expedia, Randstad, and Credit Suisse.

I write about the future of work for publications including Fast Company, Inc and Thrive and speak globally on the future of work, corporate governance and boards, and East-West issues.

I re-edited this episode and there is so much good stuff in it, that even if you listened to it when it was originally published in July of 2021, you should listen to it again.

There are a few terms that I want you to listen for in this episode:

    1. Identity foreclosure
    2. Revival of the guild
    3. Culture of experimentation

If you hear these terms you may want to relisten to those sections as I think they are important topics.

Do You Have an Adaptable Mindset Required to Become a Successful Expat? #282 Aug 08, 2022
    Show notes

    Description:

This week I will be talking about the adaptable expat mindset and what it takes to be successful as an expat. We all of expectations of what moving to another place might be like, especially another country, and those expectations are almost always wrong. The decision to be an expat is experiential and not a logical decision.

A lot of what I will discuss comes from a workshop that I developed for Amava on the thought process of becoming an expat. Well, Amava has ceased operations and I thought I would repurpose some of that content.

For those who are relatively new to this podcast, my wife and I have been living in Ajijic Mexico for 4 years. You can find all of the podcasts and blog posts on our expat page on the Career Pivot website. You will find a link to that page in the show notes.

I want to take you through many of the aspects of becoming an expat and why you need to be able to maintain an adaptable mindset. Very few things will be as you expect.

Has Your Network Abandoned You? Let's Discuss How to Plan to Get it Back! (cont) #280 Jul 25, 2022
    Show notes

    Description:

This is a continuation from episode 278 which I called Has Your Network Abandoned You? Let's Discuss How to Plan to Get it Back! I talked previously about how to identify who you need to network with and what was strategic networking. I want to discuss in this episode how to ease back into networking.

I was giving a webinar for AustinUp the other day and someone posed the question about pivoting from product marketing to product management. They were not having much luck. In order to make this kind of move, it will take a relationship to get you across and it is probably a relationship you do not have right now.

In episode 278, we discussed identifying who you need to network with, some of these people will be existing connections while others will be new connections. We will start with a focus on existing connections and building up the network muscles that have probably atrophied during the last couple of years.

I will once again give you some blog posts to read about active listening and a step-by-step process to ease back into networking.

Wanting Help to Write a Book That Changes Lives? A Conversation with AJ Harper #279 Jul 18, 2022
    Show notes

    Description:

In this week's episode, I am speaking with AJ Harper, author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. If you have thought of writing a non-fiction book this is the book for you. I have already recommended this book to several people as it will make the task far less daunting and more importantly help you write a book that delivers.

    Her bio is as follows:

AJ Harper is an editor and publishing strategist who helps authors write transformational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. As a ghostwriter and as a developmental editor, she has worked with hundreds of authors, from newbies to New York Times bestselling authors with millions of books sold. AJ teaches her method in Top Three Book Workshop and the Must-Read Editing Workshop. She is the Head Writing Coach for Heroic Public Speaking, the premier speaker training program created by Michael and Amy Port. She is a writing partner to the business author, Mike Michalowicz. Together they've written nine books, including Profit First. AJ is the author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. Connect with her at AJHarper.com.

I am pitched a lot of books for this podcast. I have turned down some prominent authors because I thought the books did not deliver on what they promised. I think they should have read this book as you will hear, AJ gives you a pretty easy system to follow to keep on track to write a book that delivers. That does not mean it is easy to do but it is an excellent system.

I am currently reading a similar book Find Your Red Thread: Make Your Big Ideas Irresistible by Tamsen Webster that I mention during the episode. It discusses a similar process to refine your ideas that I have found useful.

Has Your Network Abandoned You? Let's Discuss How to Plan to Get it Back! #278 Jul 11, 2022
    Show notes

    Description:

Many of you have lost connection with your network and community in the last 2 plus years. This could be your business community aging out on you, or losing contact with family and friends. You may have lost contact with religious organizations, social groups, and civic groups. For many, these are the people who pulled you along in your career and life. Now is the time to re-establish old connections and create new ones.

I wrote a post about a year ago called Has Your Network Aged Out and Abandoned You During the Pandemic?

If you are like me and are over the age of 50, it would not surprise anyone that your mentors, career champions, and colleagues who have supported you in your career are not available to you anymore. They may have retired, no longer be in a position of influence, or may have died during the pandemic.

I have also written about the power of community in the post Community – What Is The Value Of Belonging To One? Please check out that article.

It is your network and the communities that you have belonged to that brought your success up to this point. Now is the time to start to rebuild them.

I wrote a mega blog post five years ago called Strategic Networking Playbook – Who, How and When! In this episode, I will take you through this process to help you plan out your network. In a later episode, I will take you through what you should be doing now.
