Teaching High School Chemistry as an Encore Career with Keith Stolzenbach #227 Jun 14, 2021
    Show notes

    Description:

This week I am speaking with Keith Stolzenbach, who I was introduced to by my friends at EnCorps STEM Teachers Program. Keith spent much of his career as a professor at MIT and UCLA. When he decided to retire in his late 60s he decided to become a high school science teacher. With the help from the EnCorps program, he is now a chemistry teacher at what is referred to as a Title 1 high school. Title 1 schools get extra assistance from the state and federal government as the majority of the students qualify for financial assistance. When I taught high school math, I taught in a Title 1 school which meant that most of my students qualified for free or reduced-price meals.

I want you to hear Keith's story, which I found quite inspiring.

Getting Back to Normal - My Observations from 26 Coffee Meetings #226 Jun 07, 2021
    Show notes

    Description:

I just returned from a 4 week trip to Austin Texas where my wife and I were vaccinated, I renewed my Texas driver's license and took care of a lot of other business.

I put out the word that I was interested in having meetings with anyone who wanted to chat with me while I was in Austin to my email list and to my personal Facebook page. I had 26 people take me up on the offer over a 4 week period.

What I found was based on their age, relationship status, health, and their employment status how they dealt with the pandemic, and more importantly, how they were emerging from the pandemic varied widely. I want to take you through my discussions and what I learned about them and myself.

Observations on Returning to a Pandemic Recovering Austin #223 May 10, 2021
    Show notes

    Description:

This week will be a different kind of episode. My wife and I arrived back in Austin a little less than a week ago. We have a lot of things to do while we are here to get properly vaccinated. You should read my blog post from last week where I compared the COVID-19 response in Mexico and the US.

We will be in Austin for a month to get both vaccination shots of the Pfizer vaccine. This is the longest we have been in the US in 2 and half years. I claim you learn more about your own culture when you go someplace else.

That is so true returning to my home town of 40 + years and finding it is not the same place anymore. Some of this is due to the pandemic and changes in people's behaviors. Some of this is due to a huge influx of people moving to the city. Some of this is I can view the city from a different perspective. I am not the same person who left Austin in June of 2018 and can look at it in a different light.
