Episode 126: Sugar in Tudor England Jul 16, 2019
    Show notes

This episode takes a look at sugar! That white powder that we put everywhere, and which most of us are trying to quit at any given time. Did our Tudor friends use sugar? If so, how? Show notes are at englandcast.com/sugar. And remember, if you like this show, please leave a rating on iTunes - it's the biggest way you can help the show grow!

Supplemental: Leanda de Lisle at the 2019 Tudor Summit Jul 07, 2019
    Show notes

This is the audio of Leanda de Lisle's talk at the 2019 Tudor Summit talking about Charles I, The White King (so the audio isn't the best). His story is the natural fulfillment of the story of the Tudors, of the Reformation that Henry VIII set into motion a century before. It's interesting that the Tudors dynasty was bookended by civil war on either sides of it, and understanding why Charles met the fate he did is crucial to understanding the impact of the Tudor policies.

Episode 125: Being Poor in Tudor England Jun 27, 2019
    Show notes

In Episode 125 we look at the experience of poverty in Tudor England, as well as the Tudor Poor Laws, leading up to the 1601 Elizabethan Poor Act. Something radical happened with the Dissolution of the Monasteries - care for the poor was suddenly shifted from being something that the church handled through the monasteries, to being something that fell on the government's shoulders. The debate about who should care for the poor has been with us since then.

Show notes will be up in a couple of days at Englandcast.com/Poor.

I've been meaning to do an episode on Bonfire Night for ages, and what better timing than to do it on Bonfire Night itself? In this episode I go over what the Gunpowder Plot was, the issues that Catholics were experiencing in Elizabethan England, and how it all turned so drastic, and then fell apart at the last minute.
