    Show notes

Looking through the rooms of the home from the 16th century - this episode looks at the history of how the kitchen changed during the 16th century. From chimneys to ovens, new technology offered new ways of cooking and preparing food, and changed the way people interacted with the kitchen. Show notes will be up at englandcast.com/kitchen. Episode 146: British History, Tudor Style Jun 12, 2020

In this episode I look at how the Tudors saw their own island's history. Bear with me through the admin - it's been a while since I did a big housekeeping. Then we look at how Brutus of Troy, monastic libraries, and 5th century travel guides to Scandinavia are all related. Show notes up at Englandcast.com/history.

    Show notes

If you're experiencing summer weather like I am, thinking about the cold winter seems a world away. But this week we're going to head back to January (you know, a simpler time before pandemics and social distancing) and talk about the times when the Thames would freeze, and life would move to the frozen open space. Episode 143: The Great Debasement Apr 16, 2020
    Show notes

In the 1540's Henry VIII began what economists have called the greatest monetary treason ever committed against citizens. What was this con job? The Great Debasement, when coins went from containing about 92% silver to less than 30%. More money to make war on France! And Ireland! Only not. It backfired. Royally and majestically.

    Episode 142: A Deep Dive into 1527 Mar 30, 2020
    Show notes

About ten years ago I read One Summer by Bill Bryson, which chronicled the summer of 1927 in America. I absolutely adore Bill Bryson anyway, and this book didn't disappoint. I wanted to do something similar on this show, showcasing one year in Tudor England. Just a spotlight on one eventful year. I chose 1527 because it was 400 years before Bill Bryson's book, and also it was the year that Henry's Great Matter began, so there was a lot to talk about.

And remember that I will be eternally grateful if you'd be so kind as to leave a rating or review (hopefully a good one!) in whatever place you listen to this show. Thanks a million - it's the best way to support this show!

In 1531 at the height of Henry VIII's Great Matter, Thomas Elyot, who was a humanist and scholar wrote a small political science book disguised as a treatise on education, extolling the virtues of wise counsellors who would speak truth to power. In this episode we look at Elyot, and The Governor, and talk political science.

Episode 139: Bad (Tudor) Romance Feb 14, 2020
    Show notes

It's a day to celebrate love, and romance, and all that mushy stuff. And the 16th century has its share of great love stories (fun fact: the wedding vows that we use today - to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, etc - are from Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer, and were inspired by his own secret marriage). But what about the romances that went sour? They may have started off full of hope, but then it all backfired. In this episode we take a look at a couple of Bad Tudor Romances.

Remember, if you like this show, the best thing you can do to help it grow is to leave a rating or review on whatever podcatcher you're using to listen to this. It's free, just takes a minute, and is a huge difference! Thank you!

Episode 138: Arks and Floods and Prophesy, Oh My! Jan 10, 2020

In 1524 Europe was convinced the world was ending. A prophesy foretold of a giant flood. 20,000 people fled London for higher ground. We discuss.
