Should I Have Sex With My Spouse After They Cheated On Me? Jul 20, 2022
    Show notes

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text!

One of the most common questions we get here at Marriage Helper is, "We're having marital problems, but my spouse still wants to sleep with me." Now, sometimes that just means sleep. Maybe they want to be in the same bed.

But more often, that question means, "My spouse wants to have sex with me. What do you think? Should I have sex with my spouse after they cheated on me?"

There are definitely pros and cons to this decision, and it should not be made lightly. We discuss that and how you can choose a path forward on this episode of Relationship Radio.

How Family And Relatives Can Hurt Your Marriage & What To Do About It Jul 06, 2022
    Show notes

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text!

While marriage might be between two people, many other people can influence it. For example, parents, siblings, and even distant relatives can positively and negatively affect your marriage. Your family may lead you down the right path 99% of the time because they care about you. But biased people and biased advice can lead you to make poor decisions. This is especially true if you’re having troubles in your marriage.

If you’ve determined that you can set enough STOPs and COREs that it’s safe to return to your relationship, you will have to stand firm against your family. You’ll get pushback from them, but set your parameters and expectations and stick to them. Demonstrate the changes that you make to everyone involved. The families involved are more likely to accept and support the marriage when they believe it's a healthy marriage for both people.

How To Help Your Spouse Work Through Shame Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text!

We often hear that a couple can’t start to reconcile their marriage because one of them is too ashamed. They might have had an affair, gambled away their money, or had an addiction problem, and now they feel like their spouse won’t forgive them.

Guilt can be a positive thing if it helps us realize we need to change. But long-term guilt can lead to a sense of shame that can affect your sense of self-worth, self-confidence, self-esteem, and your physiology.

People experiencing deep shame have to first realize what they are feeling before they can begin to heal. There are still ways that your spouse can help. Using SMART contact can help you remember to avoid PUSH behaviors, respond in a kind, strong, and gentle way, and take it one day at a time.

What Is SMART Contact In Marriage? Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text!

If you’re going through a separation or a divorce, your spouse may have stopped wanting to communicate with you. At Marriage Helper, we’ve developed a method called SMART contact that we built just for this situation. SMART contact is an acronym that we use to describe the process a person can go through when they are trying to teach themselves how to best communicate with their spouse.

SMART contact works. But even if you do everything right, your spouse has the free will to choose not to respond and continue leaving the marriage. But using this framework is the healthiest way of communicating, especially in a marriage in crisis. Communication in your marriage did not fall apart overnight, and it will not magically be repaired overnight either. Read further to see what SMART contact stands for and how it can be used to rebuild positive communication.

How Do I Get My Spouse To Forgive Me Jun 08, 2022
    Show notes

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text!

Forgiveness can be difficult to both give and receive. When we’ve been hurt, especially by a loved one, that pain will take time to heal. The first and most important key to remember is that you can’t force forgiveness. Accept that your spouse has the right to forgive you or not. But is there a way to get your spouse to forgive you?

Forgiveness must be earned. You can take several actions to aid this process, but everyone grieves at a different pace. Continuing to apologize might do more damage to your marriage than good. So, after you clearly, sincerely, and humbly apologize, continue to work on being the best version of yourself through working on physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual attraction.

How To Tell Your Spouse You Lied Jun 01, 2022
    Show notes

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text!

If you knew that you’d done something that might hurt your spouse, would you tell them? Maybe you have a porn addiction that they haven't discovered. Perhaps you have a gambling problem, have had an affair, or one of the hundreds of other possibilities. Any one of these could be devastating to your spouse and your relationship. So is there ever a good time to not share everything?

The answer is complicated. At Marriage Helper, we advise that you weigh the benefit versus the cost. Think about the outcome of telling your spouse and ask yourself who it will benefit. For example, if your secret is decades old and your relationship has continued to grow, then it is possible the costs would greatly outweigh the benefits. This is only one of the many questions you’ll need to answer before you can decide to tell your spouse what you’ve done.
