    Episode 7 of the Rattlecast features frequent Rattle contributor Kim Dower and her new book "Sunbathing on Tyrone Power's Grave." For details on how to participate, either pre-recorded or via Skype, go to: https://www.rattle.com/rattlecast/ ____ Kim Dower, originally from New York City, received a BFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, where she also taught creative writing. Sunbathing on Tyrone Power’s Grave is her fourth collection of poetry. Her other collections, Air Kissing on Mars, (2010) described by the Los Angeles Times as “sensual and evocative . . . seamlessly combining humor and heartache,” was on the Poetry Foundation’s Contemporary Best Sellers list, Slice of Moon, (2013) was nominated for a Pushcart, and called, “unexpected and sublime,” by “O” magazine, and Last Train to the Missing Planet, (2016), was described by Janet Fitch as being “full of worldly, humorous insights into life as it is,” were all published by Red Hen Press. Kim’s work has been featured in Garrison Keillor's "The Writer's Almanac," and Ted Kooser’s “American Life in Poetry,” as well as in Ploughshares, Barrow Street, Rattle and Eclipse. Her poems are included in several anthologies, including, Wide Awake: Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond, (Beyond Baroque Books/Pacific Coast Poetry Series, 2015) and Coiled Serpent: Poets Arising from the Cultural Quakes & Shifts of Los Angeles, (Tia Chucha Press). She teaches two workshops, Poetry and Dreaming and Poetry and Memory in the B.A. Program of Antioch University. Owner of Kim-from-L.A. a literary publicity company helping authors promote and market their books, Kim was the City Poet Laureate of West Hollywood, from October, 2016 through October, 2018. In the 1980s, he studied with Beat poets Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, and others at Naropa University (Boulder, Colorado). After receiving an MA in Contemplative Psychology he worked as an clinical outpatient psychotherapist; he received his Ph.D. in Poetics and Depth Psychology in 1990, studying Archetypal Psychology with James Hillman at The Union Institute & University. His book, Poems of Consciousness: Contemporary Japanese & English-language Haiku in Cross-cultural Perspective (2008), was awarded the HSA 2009 Mildred Kanterman Award for Haiku Criticism and Theory. In August 2013, The Disjunctive Dragonfly: A New Theory of English-language Haiku was awarded the Touchstone Prize in criticism.     ep. 3 - Tribute to David Berman Aug 20, 2019

    This special edition of the Rattlecast takes us to a meeting of the Powow River Poets, where they remember their friend and Powow member David Berman. Two of David's poems appeared posthumously in Rattle #62, and a poem written for him by Bruce Bennett appeared in the summer issue of the magazine. Bruce recently published a limited edition chapbook about David, called "First Reader." For more on the Powow River Poets, visit their website: https://www.powowriverpoets.com/ ____ David Berman (1934-2017) was born on September 11, 1934, in New York City and raised in Hollywood, Florida. Berman was licensed as an attorney the same year and clerked at the Supreme Judicial Court for Justice Spiegel. From 1964 to 1967 he was an assistant attorney general under Edward Brooke. From 1967 until his death he had a private practice in the Boston area with an emphasis on business litigation. Berman also had a parallel career as a poet. While working in Boston in the late 1950s, he took Robert Lowell's poetry seminar at Boston University. As a law student at Harvard he was permitted to take Archibald MacLeish's poetry course, which he called the "high point" of his week, and where he met and befriended the poet Bruce Bennett. While at Harvard, Berman was published in the Harvard Advocate and became "almost a fixture of its pages." Over the years, Berman published a number of poems in literary journals such as The Formalist, Piedmont Literary Review, Sparrow, Orbis, Iambs and Trochees, and Pivot. His favorite poems were eventually collected into a third chapbook, David Berman's Greatest Hits 1965-2002, published by Pudding House Publications. Berman was a member of the Harvard Club and the Powow River Poets, a trustee of the Cantata Singers, and Vice Echanson and Vice Concelier Gastronomique Honoraire of the Boston chapter of the Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs. He passed away on June 22, 2017, after battling cancer for several months. Lynne Thompson is the author of Start with a Small Guitar (What Books Press, 2013), Beg No Pardon (Perugia Press, 2007), and her newest book, Fretwork (Marsh Hawk Press, 2019). One of our most frequently published poets, she's also appeared in eight issues of Rattle, most recently Rattle #52. Thompson received an Artist Fellowship from the City of Los Angeles in 2015. She was born in Los Angeles, California, and received a BA from Scripps College and a JD from Southwestern Law School.
