    ​Michael T. Young's third full-length collection, The Infinite Doctrine of Water, was published by Terrapin Books. His chapbook, Living in the Counterpoint (Finishing Line Press), received the 2014 Jean Pedrick Chapbook Award from the New England Poetry Club. His other collections include The Beautiful Moment of Being Lost (Poets Wear Prada), Transcriptions of Daylight (Rattapallax Press), and Because the Wind Has Questions (Somers Rocks Press). He received a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Chaffin Poetry Award. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous print and online journals including The Cimarron Review, The Cortland Review, Edison Literary Review, Lunch Ticket, The Potomac Review, and Valparaiso Poetry Review.     Episode #26 features 2019 Rattle Poetry Prize Finalist Kathleen Balma and her chapbook Gallimaufry & Farrago. Kathleen Balma is a public librarian and the author of Gallimaufry & Farrago (Finishing Line Press 2018), a poetry chapbook. She received a Master of Library Science and a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry Writing from Indiana University. A Fulbright Fellow and Pushcart Prize winner, she is the recipient of a Katherine Bakeless Nason Scholarship from Bread Loaf Environmental Writers' Conference, a Tennessee Williams scholarship from Sewanee Writers' Conference, and a writer-in-residence fellowship from Rivendell Writers' Colony. She has published widely in magazines and anthologies, including Ecotone, Missouri Review, New Ohio Review, the Montreal International Poetry Prize Anthology, and the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor's International Poetry Prize Anthology. She grew up in the Ohio River Valley of Illinois and has lived in the Ozarks of Missouri, a Michigan forest, urban Andalucía, a naval base near the Windy City, suburban New South Wales, Western Australia, a trailer park in Little Egypt, several corners of the Hoosier state, Castilla la Mancha, small-town New England, and the only Garden District in Central Louisiana.     In this episode we'll visit with Chaun Ballard and his chapbook, Flight. Chaun has appeared in issues 66 and 60 of Rattle, and several times in Poets Respond. Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and San Bernardino, California, Chaun Ballard is the co-host of the Blue Doors Poetry Retreat in Galaxidi, Greece, an affiliate editor for Alaska Quarterly Review, a Callaloo fellow, and a graduate of the MFA Program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Chaun Ballard’s chapbook, Flight, is the winner of the 2018 Sunken Garden Poetry Prize and is published by Tupelo Press. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Columbia Poetry Review, Frontier Poetry, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Lunch Ticket, Narrative Magazine, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, Rattle, Spoon River Poetry Review, The New York Times, Tupelo Quarterly, and other literary magazines.     After a break for Christmas and New Year's Eves, the Rattlecast returns with an episode featuring another frequent contributor, Barbara Crooker, and her new book Some Glad Morning. Barbara Crooker is the author of nine books of poetry, most recently The Book of Kells (which won the Best Poetry Book 2018 Award from Poetry by the Sea) and Some Glad Morning (Pitt Poetry Series). Her first book, Radiance, won the 2005 Word Press First Book Award and was finalist for the 2006 Paterson Poetry Prize; Line Dance, her second book, won the 2009 Paterson Award for Excellence in Literature. Crooker is a poetry editor for Italian Americana and has received a number of awards, including the WB Yeats Society of New York Award, the Thomas Merton Poetry of the Sacred Award, and three Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Creative Writing Fellowships. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies.     Peter E. Murphy was born in Wales and grew up in New York City where he operated heavy equipment, managed a nightclub and drove a taxi. He is the author of eleven books and chapbooks including most recently, Mean Time and The Man Who Never Was. His poems, essays and photographs have been published in hundreds of journals including The Amsterdam Quarterly, The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Cortland Review, Diode, Guernica, Hippocampus, Hayden’s Ferry Review, The New York Times, The New Welsh Review, Rattle, The Shakespeare Quarterly and elsewhere. Looking for Thelma, an excerpt from his memoir-in-progress, won the 2018 Wilt Nonfiction Chapbook Prize sponsored by St. Leo University. He has received awards and fellowships for teaching and for writing from numerous organizations including The Folger Shakespeare Library, The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The New Jersey State Council on the Arts, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and Yaddo.     For episode 21, we visit with longtime Rattle contributor Tony Gloeggler, along with a special "closed" mic, featuring poems from the anthology Alongside We Travel: Contemporary Poets on Autism. Tony's most recent books focus on his relationship with his ex-girlfriend's autistic son, and his poems are also included in the anthology. Tony Gloeggler was born and raised in New York City. He is the author of a half-dozen full-length poetry collections, most of them from NYQ Books. His most recent is Until the Last Light Leaves. His chapbook One on One won the 1998 Pearl Poetry Prize. Gloeggler’s work has been published in journals and anthologies such as Chiron Review, Paterson Literary Review, New Ohio Review, Poet Lore, Nerve Cowboy, Spillway, The Examined Life, Raleigh Review, San Pedro River Review, and Juked. He’s had 10 poems appear in Rattle over the last 20 years and his poem "1969" is one of the most-read in Rattle's history. Gloeggler currently manages a group home for developmentally disabled men in Brooklyn.     Naomi Shihab Nye was interviewed in Rattle #21, and in this week we discuss her newest book The Tiny Journalist. She has been a Lannan Fellow, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Witter Bynner Fellow (Library of Congress). She has received a Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets, the Isabella Gardner Poetry Award, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, the Paterson Poetry Prize, four Pushcart Prizes, the Robert Creeley Prize, and "The Betty Prize" from Poets House, for service to poetry, and numerous honors for her children’s literature, including two Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards. In 2019 she was named Young People's Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation. Her most recent book is The Tiny Journalist. Nye is Professor of Creative Writing - Poetry at Texas State University.     Bob Hicok has appeared in several issues of Rattle, including the conversation in issue #29. His books have been awarded the Bobbitt Prize from the Library of Congress and named a "Notable Book of the Year" by Booklist. His most recent book is Hold. Hicok has worked as an automotive die designer and a computer system administrator. He is currently a professor at Virginia Tech University.     ep. 18 - Nickole Brown Nov 20, 2019

    Nickole Brown's chapbook To Those Who Were Our First Gods was winner of the 2018 Rattle Chapbook Prize. She received her MFA from the Vermont College, studied literature at Oxford University, and was the editorial assistant for the late Hunter S. Thompson. She worked at Sarabande Books for ten years. Her first collection, Sister, a novel-in-poems, was first published in 2007 by Red Hen Press and a new edition was reissued by Sibling Rivalry Press in 2018. Her second book, a biography-in-poems called Fanny Says, came out from BOA Editions in 2015 and won the Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry. The audio book of that collection came out in 2017. She lives with her wife, poet Jessica Jacobs, in Asheville, North Carolina, where she volunteers at four different animal sanctuaries.
