Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #61: Lili Haydn - Part 1 (Lotus Weinstock) Jan 18, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we have and we promise you, one of the most unique, fascinating, jaw dropping, emotional and sometimes shocking interviews we've ever had on the podcast. Today we are talking to Grammy-winning musician/composer/vocalist/violinist Lili Haydn, whose sophomore album from Opium Moon Night and Day is up for another Grammy next month. She's also a composer, has recorded six solo albums and performed with everyone from Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Herbie Hancock, Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn, Roger Waters, The Jayhawks, Tom Petty and Parliament/Funkadelic to name just a few.

Talking to Lili was frankly, unlike anything we have covered before on any episode. Lili and host Josh Mills talked for a long time which is why this is a two-part episode. There was just too much amazing stuff, we couldn't cut any of it. We talked about her comedian/author/writer mother Lotus Wienstock, a free spirit who not only was engaged to Lenny Bruce but became one of the beloved comedians of her era. She was a trail blazer and influential stand-up comedian and was loved and respected by contemporaries like Richard Pryor, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Sandra Bernhard and Jerry Seinfeld, She excelled in her own personal and inclusive brand of comedy that was as much a shared audience experience as stand-up could be. She was the impetus behind The Comedy Store founding "The Belly Room," where only women could perform, in an era when comedy was essentially a men's only club. Lotus also wrote a fantastic book called The Lotus Position, changed her name twice and had her music recorded by Ritchie Havens. And that's just the beginning.

Lili's father David Jove is a mythical figure himself. He was known as "King Acid David" in the mid-sixties due to fact that he was one of the first ever to mass-produce L.S.D. A friend of The Rolling Stones, he may or may not have been directly responsible for infamous "Redlands" bust of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Marianne Faithfull and others in 1967. He was also a colleague of Stanley Owsley The Grateful Dead soundman and L.S.D. aficionado, created two early music video shows including New Wave Theater which mixed punk rock, SCTV and SNL alums and was hosted by enigmatic host Peter Ivers whose unsolved murder we discuss on the episode.

There is so much to unpack in our conversation with Lili in part one of this episode that it frankly left us a little spent. And oh yeah, Lili did this interview while quarantining at home with her second bout of Covid, a real trooper. All I can say is, buckle up….this is the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #60: Shawn Kay Encore (John Kay / Steppenwolf) Jan 11, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast encore episode we talk to Shawn Kay, daughter of Steppenwolf's John Kay. Our host Josh Mills grew up with Shawn in Los Angeles – they even saw The Police's 1982 Ghost in the Machine tour at the Forum back in middle school. This encore episode is a deep dive as we discuss her father being born in Prussia, his emigration to Canada founding his early band The Sparrows in Toronto and his move with his soon-to-be wife move to LA and the formation of Steppenwolf. The band sold more than 25 million albums and had huge mega hits such as "Born to Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Rock Me" in the late '60s and early '70s. We discuss the hit counterculture film Easy Rider which cemented Steppenwolf's place in pop culture history. We also talk to Shawn about everything from her hippie parents to the lean years when a John Kay-less New Steppenwolf was touring after the real band broke up. This forced her father to reignite the band to control their legacy and hit the road again in the late 1970s all the way through into the 2000s. We also hear about Halloween parties with music executive Lou Adler & Cheech & Chong, how Shawn and fellow podcast guest Carnie Wilson introduced The Beach Boys in concert as well as her stint at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Records in the 90s. But today, it is her passion for animals – dogs, elephants, you name it – that motivates her. Her Mind, Body, Dog dog training business is her passion now and as a client, Josh couldn't recommend her highly enough. We hear all about this and more as we head out on the highway on this week's encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #59: Jason Culp Encore (Robert Culp) Jan 04, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast encore episode, we are talking to Jason Culp, son of actor, writer and director Robert Culp. TV fans of the 1960s will remember Robert Culp as Kelly Robinson on the groundbreaking television show I Spy, co-starring with comedian/actor Bill Cosby which was the first American television show to feature a black actor as a lead character. TV fans of the 1950s will remember him as Ranger Hoby Gilman in the western series Trackdown and fans of 80s will remember him as FBI Agent Bill Maxwell in the hit series The Greatest American Hero. Culp starred in hundreds of film and television roles but as Jason tells us on this episode, his real love was writing and directing. Culp did both and we hear not only about his directorial debut on the film Hickey & Boggs but about a never-before-released documentary on civil rights which we hope gets to be seen one day soon. We discuss a lot in this episode from Sammy Davis Jr. & Anthony Newley to Paul Mazursky & Sam Peckinpah. One of our earliest recordings, again pre-pandemic, this is another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with Jason Culp.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #58: Adam Shawn Encore (Dick Shawn) Dec 28, 2021
    Show notes

Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to Adam Shawn, son of the immensely talented and hysterical comedian Dick Shawn. Adam and host Josh Mills have quite a connection here as Dick Shawn and Josh's mom Edie Adams starred together in films like It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, television movies like Fast Friends and Evil Roy Slade and a TV variety show, Here's Edie, hosted by, who else, Edie Adams. The connections don't stop there. Shawn and Ernie Kovacs, Edie's first husband starred in the war-time comedy, Wake Me When it's Over. We recorded this in person, pre-pandemic and got to talk to Adam about some of his father's best roles including L.S.D. in the original version of Mel Brooks' The Producers, his one-man show The (2nd) Greatest Entertainer in the World and his antics on The Tonight Show, The Ed Sullivan Show and even on a Fat Boys album in the 1980s. Adam spoke with us about his dad's stint in the minors playing for the Chicago White Sox affiliate, a very intense incident in Miami Beach with a mobsters moll (evidently) & how to this day, his father's inventive and genius comedy is severely underappreciated. Oh the places you'll go, on this encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #57 : Dinah Manoff (Lee Grant) Dec 21, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to actress and writer Dinah Manoff, who you know from her film roles in Grease, Child's Play and Ordinary People as well as on television in series' like Empty Nest, Soap and State of Grace. She's a Tony award winning stage actress who created the role of Libby in Neil Simon's I Ought To Be In Pictures on Broadway and went on to star in the film with Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret. It's only fitting that the daughter of Oscar and Emmy Award winning actress and director Lee Grant and writer Arnold Manoff would one day write her very first novel, The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold, which is out now. While not her story exactly, The Real Life Story of Jackie Gold is about celebrity, Hollywood, paparazzi, the business of celebrity and seeks to answer the question: did Jackie Gold jump or was she pushed? It's the story of a white hot actress who recounts her life in flashbacks from her hospital bed after a tragic accident which is both funny and ripped from today's headlines. We talk to Dinah about a wide range of other topics including the blacklist, Neil Simon, Marie Osmond, Peyton Place, growing up in the Malibu Colony, Richard Mulligan, Tony Curtis, her mother's Oscar winning documentary Down and Out in America, The Neighborhood Playhouse, Victor Buono, Cal Arts, soft core porn made at her home and so much more. It was a real thrill talking to the woman behind Marty Maraschino (like the cherry) who was funny, open and ready to talk. It's coming up next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #56: Ann Marie Snyder (Tom Snyder) Dec 14, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Ann Marie Snyder, daughter of journalist, news anchor and talk show host Tom Snyder who will soon be the topic of a documentary of his life, called Tom Who? Known primarily as the host of his late night program, The Tomorrow Show in the 1970s and his Late, Late Show with Tom Snyder in the 1990s, Tom Snyder was a charismatic, deep-thinking, irreverent and ethical personality who pioneered the long form, single subject interview on American television beginning in the early 1970s. Unlike say Johnny Carson or Merv Griffin (or even Steve Allen or Ernie Kovacs), Snyder considered himself a journalist first. His interviews with everyone from Charles Manson to John Lennon, Johnny Rotten, Kiss, Henry Miller and Howard Stern were either casual conversations you could slip into like a soft pair of slippers or occasionally cantankerous affairs, usually done with a cigarette in hand and a hearty laugh. Snyder loved his audience and his audience loved him. Frequent call-in guests to his three-hour radio show in the 1980s were Sherman Helmsley, Robert Blake and some guy from Indiana who turned out to be David Letterman. We talk to Ann Marie about her dad and we hear stories about everything from how she was forbidden to visit the 9th floor where Saturday Night Life taped at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, how her dad and Neil Young bonded over their mutual love of Lionel Trains and how her dad refused to allow her to see Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at Madison Square Garden when guest and original Tom Petty drummer Stand Lynch gave Ann Marie two tickets and use of the band limo to the gig at age 15.It's a great conversation with Ann Marie as we talk about her dad, who hated network interference, loved a stiff drink and was quite possibly the Godfather of the podcast as we know it today. And so as Tom might say, "Fire up a colortini, sit back, relax, and watch the pictures, now, as they fly through the air." This is the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #55: Rain Pryor (Richard Pryor) Dec 07, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Rain Pryor, daughter of legendary comedian Richard Pryor. Like many of our episodes, this one covers a lot of ground and thankfully, Rain was not only game for all of it but she was thoughtful, funny and eloquent talking about a myriad of subjects. We touch upon everything from her years growing up in a household where words like Motherfucker were used as exclamation points, her favorite films of her father's career, her own career as a performer, stand-up comedian, author, activist, producer and speaker and her astronomer mother. Wait what? Yes, it's true. She also is a mother and a cancer survivor. It's a deep and deeply funny conversation with Rain because we can touch on everything from how she not only tried sushi for the first time with comedian Danny Kaye (and that that he actually made it for her) but also her stint running for Baltimore City Council. Like her one woman show, Fried Chicken and Latkas, about her black and Jewish roots, Rain is a dichotomy of two worlds. The thinker who gets certified from Cornell as well as the choice to follow her dad's advice and do stand-up. It's a great conversation where serious subjects lead to lighter moments (or vice versa) and odd coincidences like how she has been Josh's house and he never knew it. We've wanted to talk to her for so long and it's finally here. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you, the awesome Rain Pryor.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #54: Janna Taninbaum & Michael Ritz - Part 2 (Harry Ritz/The Ritz Brothers) Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

Well look at this. A true two-part episode of our conversation with the children of comedian/dancer Harry Ritz of The Ritz Brothers, Janna Taninbaum and Michael Ritz. And we really have to thank them. True troopers, they dealt with some major technical issues on our end and the occasional Zoom lag for a second sit down, two days after our original conversation. Lots to unpack here – from anti-Semitism faced by Harry to out of this world gambling stories to the Catskills to what made the funniest of them all, laugh. So set your internal clocks back a decade or two, sit back and listen to Janna and Michael wax philosophical about race horses owned by Betty Grable, the previously unknown Tupelo Brothers, life in Las Vegas in the seventies and some racy behavior from Don Rickles and a telescope & Betty Grable's aversion to toilet seats. Ahem! If names like Jan Murray, Tyrone Power and Erroll Flynn thrill you, take a listen, to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #53: Janna Taninbaum & Michael Ritz - Part 1 (Harry Ritz/The Ritz Brothers) Nov 23, 2021
    Show notes

Today on part one of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to not one but two children of celebrities, Janna Taninbaum and Michael Ritz, son of comedian Harry Ritz of The Ritz Brothers. Now, you may not know the work of Harry Ritz or even heard name sadly enough but let's be clear: without Harry Ritz, there is no Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, Jerry Lewis or Milton Berle. Beginning in vaudeville in the 1920's, The Ritz Brothers, Harry, Al and Jimmy moved to Broadway in the 1930s and were the highest paid act on stage and during the depression. Known for their syncopated dancing, singing and slapstick comedy, the brothers rivaled another team of siblings, The Marx Brothers in popularity. Starring in 19 films and shorts, the Ritz Brothers were led by "the guy in the middle" (Harry) whose antics included funny faces, outlandish dance routines and manic energy made him a crowd favorite. In fact, he was asked twice – once by Irving Berlin and once by 20th Century Fox head, Darryl Zanuck to go solo but Harry refused. He had promised his mother he would look after his brothers and they remained a trio until 1966 when Al died during a club date and Jimmy and Harry went out on their own. The duo opened the El Rancho and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, they toured together well into the 1970s and because they were still headliners well into the 1960s, they solely focused on their live act. So why isn't Harry Ritz or The Ritz Brothers as well known today as the comedy innovators they clearly were? Quite a few reasons actually and we discuss that in the first part of this episode. Thankfully, the funniest comedians of their time knew who their mentor was. It was Harry who told Uncle Miltie to wear a dress if he wanted more laughs, Jerry Lewis's unabashed mugging that was clearly influenced by Harry and Mel Brooks said, "As far as I'm concerned, Harry Ritz is the funniest man ever." And we break it all down to you today, on part one of this episode of the Ritz-ified, I mean, the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #52: Morgan Margolis Encore (Mark Margolis) Nov 16, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Morgan Margolis, son of Mark Margolis aka Salamanca in Breaking Bad aka The Shadow in Scarface aka Mr. Shickadance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Morgan was our very first interview, done within the hallowed halls of The Federal Bar, which he runs as one small part of The Knitting Factory Entertainment where he is CEO. This is another episode taped in person, pre-Covid and we talk to Morgan about his time as a child growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and his days skateboarding at the base of the World Trade Center in the 1970s. We hear all about his parents hippie existence putting on productions on the east coast in a VW van, his father's psychedelic awakening as a parent early, his lean, early years acting in small films and TV shows, waiting for his break while waiting tables and his first role on film in an adult film. Ahem. Morgan also waxes philosophical about his days acting in television, his own days waiting tables that led him to his current gig and his motley 'crew' of friends who all went on to fame in acting, music and business. Curious? You won't be. Answers are coming up next on the encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
