Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #71: Alison Martino (The Return, Part 2) (Al Martino) Mar 29, 2022
    Show notes

Oy the kvetching in this one! This is part two of our conversation with Alison Martino and boy are she and our host working themselves up in a lather about the changes in LA. That's what happens when you get two born and bred Los Angelinos together talking about Vintage Los Angeles. But when you have a brand such as Alison's own Vintage LA, how could you not? So just get ready for a deep dive into long gone LA landmarks like The Garden of Allah, Butterfields, House of Blues, Tower Records and more.

Aside from old LA, we also get to take hear some fabulous insider stories about Alison's dad Al Martino getting the part of Johnny Fontaine in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfatherwhich is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year as well as Paramount+'s streaming service limited series, The Offer. What's the series about? It's about the alleged/fictional/partly true story of how Al Martino got offered the part in The Godfather. If you love the inner workings of old Vegas, check out the stories about when 'da boys' ran it as we hear first-hand accounts of how to get guests on the floor and gambling when Edie Adams was in the room We are certainly eavesdropping on a conversation today, which is very much an apt description of today's episode suggested by Alison. So thank you Alison. And we will take you up on the offer to host an upcoming episode….Josh would love to be your guest. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #70: Alison Martino (The Return, Part 1) (Al Martino) Mar 22, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Alison Martino. Again. As in a second time. Alison was one of our first interviews we did post pandemic so it seemed only fitting that we connect with her again as we are slowly coming out of the pandemic. It also seemed fitting that she would be the perfect person to be the first guest we've ever had on the podcast twice. Sure it didn't hurt that Alison's first episode was one of our most listened to episodes but what was fantastic about that first conversation was that both she and our host Josh Mills really had so many experiences that hit home that, in some ways, their experiences intertwined. And as Alison says on this episode, "There's a difference between show business and acting.' How right you are Alison.

On this episode, we talk about her father, singer and yes actor, Al Martino who is having a resurgence of sorts in 2022 with the 50th anniversary of The Godfather this year but also that his song "I Have But One Heart" is featured in the film and the soundtrack to the superhero megahit, The Batman. We also talk about a new series coming from Paramount+ called The Offer which is based on the (somewhat) fictionalized tale of how Al Martino got the part of Johnny Fontaine in The Godfather. And while this is very much an Al-fest (not the real thing but an incredible simulation), we also do a deep dive into Alison's Vintage LA phenomenon. What started out as Facebook group made on a lark has become a massive social media presence and has literally hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We delve into the beginnings of how this passion for her hometown spawned a rabid and loyal fanbase which has turned into a career as a journalist for Spectrum TV, a writer and also a recognized resource for people who live in and are fascinated with the City of Angels all over the world. If it's happening in Los Angeles, you kind of do need Alison's stamp of approval to make it a truly successful event.

It's so great to talk to Alison a second time as the Los Angeles from our youth is still very much alive on this podcast even if Greenblatt's delicatessen is not. These memories and conversation starters are all right here, in this episode, of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #69: Daisy Torme & James Torme Part 2 (Mel Torme, Janette Scott) Mar 15, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we present Part 2 of our interview with Daisy Torme & James Torme, children of the great Mel Torme and actress Janette Scott. This episode is a long one. This entire conversation was almost three full hours because there was just so much to talk about. We really get a glimpse into the life of these two international siblings who lived in both England and America, spending time with both their parents after the divorce. These trips brought Daisy and James closer and made their time with both their parents all the more special. Their bond and their love for their parents shines through in every story.

We also hear about how dad said goodbye to them from the Ambassadors Lounge at LAX on their transatlantic trip back to the U.K. and how he would turn down gigs in the Summertime and Christmas so he could spend time with his kids. Their mother, who made her last film in about 1967 starred in so many sci-fi classic films she actually has an annual film festival dedicated to her and how she became part of pop culture lore as she is namedropped in the song "Science Fiction/Double Feature" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And we haven't even discussed their their grandmother, iconic British actress Dame Thora Hild whose 70 year career in film and TV in England made her a household name and her passing was treated like a state funeral. It's story after story on part two of our episode with Daisy and James. Names like Eddie Fisher, David Frost, Glenn Frey, Edith Head, Buddy Rich and more are just some of the people we discuss. Wait for the Tony Randall in Tokyo story and you might have heard it all, because that one blew us away. It's next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #68 : Daisy Torme & James Torme Part 1 (Mel Torme, Janette Scott) Mar 08, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to family. Our guests this week are Daisy Torme and James Torme, the children of legendary singer (and musician and songwriter and arranger and author et all) Mel Torme, aka The Velvet Fog.)

This is a special episode because of how it began – with a message over Twitter that reconnected our host Josh Mills with Daisy and James after losing touch a long time ago. You see, Josh's dad, music publisher and later photographer Martin Mills was one quarter of a four-headed hydra of best friends that included Mel Torme, perhaps the greatest drummer of all-time, Buddy Rich and iconic entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. They were four friends who lived life in the fast lane after the end of WWII in New York and then in Los Angeles when each was breaking big in their field. In fact, you can read all about it in the Sammy Davis Jr. biography Yes I can.

This is the first of a two part episode because frankly, we talked a lot. It had been a long time. We talked about Mel's roots on the South Side of Chicago, his love of movies, the story behind writing one of the biggest holiday tunes of all-time "The Christmas Song," his Mountain Dew commercials in the 80s, how he missed out on a secret code name, a little-known TV movie produced by William Shatner called "Challenge to Survive" with Mel as a mountain man, Mel and the Mel-Tones and much more.

It's a lot of silly, fun, outrageous talk on part one of our conversation with Daisy Torme and James Torme and it's all right here on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #67: Jeff Sherman Encore (The Sherman Brothers) Mar 01, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Jeff Sherman, son of Robert Sherman or one half of songwriting team - The Sherman Brothers. Don't think you know The Sherman Brothers? Actually, I'm positive you do. They wrote some of the greatest songs every recorded for film and television. Such as? How about "A Spoonful of Sugar?" from Mary Poppins? Or "It's A Small World" – perhaps the most played song on earth? Or maybe "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" from the same film? See, you know The Sherman Brothers.

Along with his brother Richard, The Sherman Brothers wrote some of the most beloved songs of all-time. They scored films and write songs for films such as "Tom Sawyer," "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," "The Jungle Book," "Charlotte's Web," "The Tigger Movie, "The Aristocats" and many more. Our conversation covered a lot of ground with the brothers as well as their father Al Sherman, also a songwriter as well as the career Jeff had in television on shows like "Boy Meets World" as well as his comedian & wife Wendy Liebman.

So pull up a comfy chair, sit back and listen to your youth as we talk to Jeff Sherman for this week's encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #66: Jordan Summers Encore (Yale Summers) Feb 22, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Jordan Summer, whose father Yale Summers was an actor who was both beloved by actors in front of the camera and perhaps more so behind the camera. You see, while many fans might remember Yale from his years on the television sixties series Daktari as Jack Dane, it was his time working for the Screen Actors Guild that realty endeared him to his fellow actors. A co-founder and producer of the SAG Awards which is a mainstay during awards season it was Yale's work as a union man that is his lasting legacy. He was a passionate advocate for actors and the acting profession as he was both secretary and treasurer for SAG and also trustee of the SAG Pension and Health Fund.

This episode with Jordan was the first episode we ever recorded on Zoom as Covid hit pretty hard as we all remember and this was a fun episode to record. You see, Jordan and host Josh Mills attended high school together in the 80s. No, not Oakwood but University High School. We get to hear about an amazing Uni High music class Jordan attended that featured a future Grammy winner, Warren Zevon's son – also named Jordan – and future members of The Wallflowers, Buckcherry and Fishbone.

We bounce back and forth between Yale and Jordan talking about Yale's eclectic acting career in shows such as The Outer Limits, My Three Sons & Emergency! as well as summer vacations spent with Michelle Lee & then-husband James Farentino and some of the amazing phone messages Yale would receive from celebrities that were commonplace.

And with that's, it's time for the Rarified Heir Podcast encore episode with Jordan Summers. Everyone has a story.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #65: Nicky Trebek (Alex Trebek) Feb 15, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we ask the question – who is Alex Trebek's daughter? The answer is today's Daily Double, we are talking to Nicky Trebek, daughter of famed Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. Nicky and our host Josh grew up together on the same street in the 1970s, Josh with his Schwinn banana seat bike and Matchbox cars and Nicky with her skateboard and her ever present Leif Garrett posters spent quite a bit of time hanging out on a street with very few kids on it.. Their mothers were thick as thieves, as both Josh's mom Edie Adams and Micky's mom Elaine Trebek spent much of their time with Sacha Stallone, wife of Sylvester Stallone who was on the cusp of her infamous divorce from the Italian Stallion. We talk about those 70s years in the sun baked Los Angeles canyons as well as everything that followed. We get the lowdown on what motivated Alex Trebek to host Jeopardy! for an astounding 37 years, his off camera hobbies, his love of hockey, his friendship with fellow Canadians Eugene Levy and Hall of Fame goalie Rogie Vachon and his ideal time to be home for dinner after taping.

Nicky also tells us about her dads very public illness and his passing just 14 months from pancreatic cancer that is both beautiful and heartbreaking. It's a first-hand look into both the professional and personal life of one of television's most beloved figures – from Alex's ideals and charitable side to his most ideal vacation spot. It was great to reconnect with Nicky all these years later and it's a rare look inside at one of America's best loved quiz shows and most importantly, one of America's best loved quiz show hosts in Alex Trebek. This is Final Jeopardy! This is the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #64: Rachel Haden (Charlie Haden) Feb 08, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician Rachel Haden. A go-to musician and singer in her own right, we learned from our interview, Rachel is part of a musical tradition that frankly, we had no idea the depths of until we started talking about it with her for this episode. Her father, bassist Charlie Haden was one of one of the greatest bassists of all-time. Spoken about in hushed tones next to greats like Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius and Ron Carter, Charlie is perhaps best known for his time in Ornette Coleman's 'free jazz' Quartet in 1960 that literally helped revolutionize jazz. The free jazz movement pushed the boundaries of what jazz was and what it would become.

Now if that were all Charlie Haden ever did, he'd still be a legendary figure if his career ended there. However ever the next 50 years, Charlie Haden worked with everyone from Keith Jarrett, and Ginger Baker, to Elvis Costello, and Hank Mobley and even son-in-Jack Black. Born into a musical family in the 1930s, Charlie Haden grew up with country and American folk music as part of his roots. The Haden Family, much like The Carter Family, were songwriters and performers and even had their own radio show in Iowa in the 1940s. Their musical traditions were passed down in handmade books, much like a family bible, that still exist today. Which is why talking to Rachel is so much fun. Along with her sisters Petra and Tanya, The Haden Triplets have recorded two full-length albums as the Haden Triplets, based on the music of their grandparents while covering classic American country and folk music. Their debut was produced by Ry Cooder on Jack White's Third Man Records and their 2020 sophomore follow-up called The Family Songbook, was a bucket list project that brings their family musical legacy full circle.

A bass player/singer/keyboardist herself, Rachel Haden co-founded the band That Dog in the 1990s with her sister Petra and performed & recorded with a veritable who's who in music including Weezer, Todd Rundgren, Beck, Brendan Perry, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger, The Rentals, The Martini's and more. Her older brother, Josh Haden is also a musician, having founded the late 80s SST punk rock band Treacherous Jaywalkers and later, the band Spain. So what was it like growing up with the preeminent jazz bassist for a dad, an older brother bass player following in his dads footsteps and sisters Petra on the violin & Tanya on the cello? We'll find out, on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode # 63: Amanda Aday Encore (Meat Loaf) Feb 01, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are running an encore episode in tribute, an episode we recorded almost a year ago. We talk to Amanda Aday, daughter of Marvin Lee Aday aka Meat Loaf. We are running this interview a second time as a tribute to Meat Loaf and all his fans but specifically to Amanda, who speaks so glowingly about her father. There is humor, love, affection and ultimately a real familial and genuine bond that Amanda shares with us that we think you might want to hear at this time.

Losing a parent is perhaps one of the most difficult things in life but to do it in public is something altogether different and unique. Sometimes it's a comfort to know that others care and sometimes, it's a heavy burden to be reminded of it constantly. We just wanted to make sure that Amanda (and her family) know how much her father meant to his fans and also to let her know we were thinking about her.

Thankfully, Amanda shared a lot about her father in this episode that might give some great insight to who he was behind the 'rock star.' There are some great, fun stories about touring the world as a family, how her father taught his kids sports and his need to be concerned dad rather than an absent one. We also hear about her father's youth growing up in Dallas, his early years in Detroit in early groups Popcorn Blizzard as well as the Motown flavored Stoney and Meatloaf, how he stumbled into a production of Hair, his Joseph Papp Public Theater performance before his singing career took off, his work in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, his partnership and collaboration with Jim Steinman, his mega hits Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II, touring the world (and elsewhere), his acting roles in films likeRoadie and Fight Club and about a million other things.

This is our encore episode of our conversation with Amanda Aday and it is a tribute to her father, the one and only Meat Loaf. As we like to say on the podcast, "Everyone has a story." Today, we hear Amanda's story about her father as well as the entertainer. It's funny, enlightening, fascinating and honest. Thank you Amanda. We are thinking about you.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #62: Lili Haydn Part 2 (Lotus Weinstock, David Jove) Jan 25, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we have and we promise you, one of the most unique, fascinating, jaw dropping, emotional and sometimes shocking interviews we've ever had on the podcast. Today we are talking to Grammy-winning musician/composer/vocalist/violinist Lili Haydn, whose sophomore album from her band Opium Moon Night and Day is up for another Grammy next month. She's also a composer, has recorded six solo albums and performed with everyone from Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Herbie Hancock, Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn, Roger Waters, The Jayhawks, Tom Petty and Parliament/Funkadelic to name just a few.

Talking to Lili was frankly, unlike anything we have covered before on any episode. Lili and host Josh Mills talked for a long time which is why this is a two-part episode. There was just too much amazing stuff, we couldn't cut any of it. We talked about her comedian/author/writer mother Lotus Wienstock, a free spirit who not only was engaged to Lenny Bruce but became one of the beloved comedians of her era. She was a trail blazer and influential stand-up comedian and was loved and respected by contemporaries like Richard Pryor, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Sandra Bernhard and Jerry Seinfeld, She excelled in her own personal and inclusive brand of comedy that was as much a shared audience experience as stand-up could be. She was the impetus behind The Comedy Store founding "The Belly Room," where only women could perform, in an era when comedy was essentially a men's only club. Lotus also wrote a fantastic book called The Lotus Position, changed her name twice and had her music recorded by Ritchie Havens. And that's just the beginning.

Lili's father David Jove is a mythical figure himself. He was known as "King Acid David" in the mid-sixties due to fact that he was one of the first ever to mass-produce L.S.D. A friend of The Rolling Stones, he may or may not have been directly responsible for infamous "Redlands" bust of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Marianne Faithfull and others in 1967. He was also a colleague of Stanley Owsley The Grateful Dead soundman and L.S.D. aficionado, created two early music video shows including New Wave Theater which mixed punk rock, SCTV and SNL alums and was hosted by enigmatic host Peter Ivers whose unsolved murder we discuss on the episode.

There is so much to unpack in our conversation with Lili in part one of this episode that it frankly left us a little spent. And oh yeah, Lili did this interview while quarantining at home with her second bout of Covid, a real trooper. All I can say is, buckle up….this is the Rarified Heir Podcast.
