Senate Bill Would Treat Crypto Like Commodities Jun 08, 2022
    Show notes

The U.S. Congress is getting closer to passing long-promised and highly anticipated legislation to regulate cryptocurrency, a step many industry insiders see as critical to the goal of widespread adoption. Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Republican from Wyoming, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat from New York, have introduced a bill that would establish a regulatory framework for most digital assets, treating them as commodities within the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Santiago Velez, co-founder and head of R&D at Block Digital, joins Real Vision’s Nico Brugge and Ash Bennington to break down the bill and its potential impact on the industry. Santiago, Nico, and Ash also talk about the fresh Binance controversy and the Bored Ape Yacht Club hack. Want to submit questions? ALEX and the Future of Finance Jun 07, 2022
    Show notes

Bitcoin-native DeFi apps are emerging with the aim to provide next-generation financial services built on the world’s best-known blockchain. Dr. Chiente Hsu, an expert in the field of quantitative investments, is using Stacks to build ALEX (that’s short for “Automated Liquidity Exchange”), the first full-service DeFi platform on Bitcoin. A one-stop shop, ALEX enables the launch of tokens, fixed-rate and fixed-term lending and borrowing, decentralized exchange operations with both automated market-maker and off chain order-book protocols, the deposit of tokens to earn interest, and yield farming. Dr. Hsu, a co-founder and the CEO of ALEX, joins Real Vision’s Ash Bennington for an in-depth discussion about a future where what today we call “DeFi” is just “finance.” Recorded on May 31, 2022.

Metalink Wants To Secure the Future of NFT Communities Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

Jake Udell’s decades-long career in music, marketing, and activation is built on bringing together community and culture. Now, the founder and CEO of Metalink is building a hub for NFT communities to communicate effectively, a comprehensive space for NFT owners to connect, view their collection and get access to Alpha via a real-time transaction feed. Channels are token-gated, so proof of ownership of an NFT or a social token is required to access the content. That’s a solid step toward preventing fraud and fostering a positive space for NFT owners. Udell joins Real Vision’s Ash Bennington for a thoughtful discussion about the evolution of technology, adoption curves, and the future of the metaverse. Recorded on June 1, 2022.

    Show notes

Bitcoin has recovered a bit, and altcoin prices have stabilized. Is the status quo sustainable, or is there more downside ahead? Option Insight's Imran Lakha joins Real Vision's Ash Bennington to discuss Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the trajectory of the cryptocurrency market. Art Is Art Jun 03, 2022
    Show notes

What happened at a New York party when traditional art gallerist Adam Lindemann, the founder of Venus Over Manhattan, met Erick Calderon, the founder of Art Blocks and the creator of the Chromie Squiggles NFT collection? Adam and Erick come to it from different places, but they both recognize the potential of blockchain technology to open the world of art to “an entire new universe of collectors.” Here’s the old school and the new school coming together around a shared appreciation for the future. As Lindemann put it, “If Andy Warhol was alive today, he'd be the first one trying to make an NFT." Recorded on May 26, 2022.

NFTs Will Be the Sirens of the Digital World Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

As Andrew Steinwold sees it, we can't expect people to change the way they transact based on arguments built around "blockchain transactions per second, staking, [and] down with the Fed." That’s not how to get them to understand and appreciate the value of crypto. On the other hand, fun things like "art, video games, and collectibles" will attract the masses and will pique their interest in this new digital world. NFTs, Steinwold explains to Sergio Silva, will be the thing that brings the people to the cryptoverse. Steinwold, managing partner at Sfermion, and Silva, an NFT collector and the sales director at Fireblocks, also talk about gamers, a slowing economy’s potential to affect Web3 investment, and the crypto industry’s future. Recorded on May 25, 2022.

    Here’s What We’ve Learned From Terra’s Meltdown Jun 01, 2022
    Show notes

It looks like Bitcoin is recovering from its recent steep sell-off, but many investors fear this could be a short-lived bounce. That reflects a broader market still assessing the damage done by the epic failure of the so-called algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD and its sister token Luna. As Terra’s founders try to revive the project, questions about lessons learned and security abound. Leslie Lamb, chief marketing officer at CoinFLEX, and Ari Redbord, head of legal and government affairs at TRM Labs, join Real Vision’s Ash Bennington and Marco Olivera to talk about lingering fallout from the Terra meltdown, Tether’s controversial modus operandi, and the latest buzz about mergers and acquisitions in the crypto space.

How To Make Ethereum for the People May 31, 2022
    Show notes

Ethereum gas fees are high. Unless costs of using the network can be controlled, the dream of an open and user-owned internet is a fantasy. Are layer 2 scaling solutions the answer? Andrew Cahill and Saurabh Deshpande of The Block join Real Vision's Ash Bennington to discuss their recent research report on what could be the key to widespread adoption. Ethereum has made major strides in the past few years, settling trillions of dollars’ worth of transactions, comparable to Visa, Mastercard, and Paypal. But the network is too expensive for the average user. The way Cahill sees it, Ethereum is still "a platform for the 'one percent.'" Cahill and Deshpande differentiate scaling solutions and also discuss the upcoming Ethereum merge. Which scaling solutions are best? Will the merge bring down costs? Cahill and Deshpande answer these questions and many more. Recorded on May 24, 2022.
