Toilet Radio 433 – The Great Leap Forward May 17, 2023

This week on Toilet Radio we're comparing and contrasting the very beginning with the most recent output of a whole shit ton of bands. FEATURED: Linkin Park used to be Xero (sans Chester) / Dredg used to be nu metal as FUCK before going sensitive / Pantera was writing songs with the same lyrical themes back when they were glam / Before there was Type O Negative, before there was Carnivore, there was FALLOUT and it kinda sounded like DEVO / Bad Religion’s ill-fated flirtation with prog rock / Semargl goes from forgettable blackened death metal to unforgettably bad electropop / Avatar used to be Gothenburgcore before going Ladiesandgentlemenwave / Sentenced went from killer slow death metal to sultry jammies / Amorphis and Paradise Lost discover keyboards and Matchbox 20, respectively / The Baroness and Mastodon demos show clear signs of where each of these bands would go / Ulver's long transition from black metal to synthpop / Carcass started as a grindcore band before inventing like four different genres of metal / Gojira's original demo recorded when the band were teens is extremely fucking rad. Toilet Radio 429 – On Tour with “The Christian GWAR” (feat. Uzkost) Apr 26, 2023
    Show notes

This week, on a very special episode of Toilet Radio, we're joined by Josh of Uzkost to talk all things Christian metal. Last week, as you may recall, we watched Metal Missionaries to learn about Christian metal. Josh happened to join one of the bands featured in that documentary and tells us the tale of "the worst musical experience of [his] life" playing shows with Grave Robber on tour. We also talk about new music coming from Uzkost and discuss the origin of so much misogyny, the story of Eve. We also talk about Josh’s childhood playing 150 shows a year in a Christian rock n’ roll band and watch the sequel to last week's documentary - True American Black Metal - a documentary that doesn't really focus on American or black metal bands. Puzzling. Finally, Josh gives us some suggestions for Christian metal that doesn't suck (I'm currently listening to Tourniquet per his recommendation - it's rockin'). This is a killer episode, folks. Wanna help? You can learn more about Josh's work with Community Care & Resistance in Pittsburgh right here. Toilet Radio 428 – Metal Missionaries Apr 19, 2023
    Show notes

Oh boy. This week your boys watched Metal Missionaries, a 2017 documentary that is ostensibly about Christian metal. That being said, most of the bands featured aren't really metal and, if for some reason you actually wanted to learn about Christian heavy metal, you'd be better off skimming a wikipedia article and talking to an XTREME youth pastor. Instead, what we have here is a sloppy, amateurish documentary that points a camera at a bunch of really odd dudes and features some of the most jarring and off-putting narrative voiceovers you're likely to hear in any motion picture. We discuss the film, the phenomenon of Christian heavy metal, and helpfully provide plenty of samples from the documentary so that you don't ever have to actually watch this on your own. It's an episode. Music featured on this ‘sode: Deathgrave – On All Fours This program is available on Spotify. It is also available on iTunes or whatever they call it now, where you can rate, review, and subscribe. Give us money on Patreon to get exclusive bonus episodes and other cool shit.

Let’s explore this extremely poorly-named heavy metal festival that’ll happen this fall where they do Coachella. / The Keep Metal Dangerous crowd should try experimenting with K2. / Avenged Sevenfold smoked DMT with a shaman and came up with an exciting new way to give Ticketmaster more money. / Joe is the CEO of the Liquid Death water company now. / Mick Mars, the only halfway decent person in Motley Crue has decided to go scorched earth on the dickheads that have hampered him for 40 years. Folks, it's a good one. Music featured on this ‘sode: Skinher – You Are Next! This program is available on Spotify.
