Daniel: The Nightmare Of The King (Ch. 2) Feb 24, 2023
    Show notes

Have you ever had a "bad dream?" In Chapter 2 of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar had a bad dream - a nightmare that he didn't like and couldn't understand. And so he sought someone to interpret this dream for him (and began killing the 'wise men' who couldn't). Fortunately, God had given the interpretation to one man, the prophet that we know as Daniel.

Click to hear more, as we continue our study in the Book of Daniel.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) What was the King's dream about? What event did it foretell?

    B) How did the King respond to Daniel's interpretation?

    C) Does the prophetic nature of this dream match up with the events of history?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Daniel: The Nightmare Of The King (Ch. 2)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?

Daniel: Strangers In A Strange Land (Ch. 1) Feb 23, 2023
    Show notes

How do you stay faithful in a hostile culture? In Daniel 1, a young exile in pagan Babylon resolves not to defile himself, even under pressure to conform. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt shows how Daniel lived as a faithful "stranger in a strange land" — and how we can too.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. What pressure did Daniel face? To assimilate fully into Babylon's culture, including compromising his convictions. The pressure to conform was constant.

    2. How did Daniel respond? He "purposed in his heart" not to defile himself — drawing a line ahead of time and trusting God with the result.

    3. What does this teach us? That believers are sojourners here, made for a better home. We can live faithfully in a hostile culture without being swallowed by it. "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies..." — Daniel 1:8 (NKJV)

    Show notes

Have you ever been angry with God?

In Jonah 4 , the prophet was angry at God. He couldn't believe what God had done! It didn't seem good or fair to him. And so, the prophet insisted that his emotional response was right and appropriate. In today's sermon, we'll consider Jonah's frustration and God's response.

Questions That We'll Answer: 1) Why was Jonah so mad? What had happened? 2) Was Jonah's anger focused on the Ninevites, or toward God? 3) How did God respond to Jonah's outburst, and what can we learn from this?

Jonah: Dread And Danger In Nineveh (Chapter 3) Feb 20, 2023
    Show notes

It was just one sermon. And that sermon was only eight words long. But what was the result? Over a hundred thousand people repented.

There's no other sermon like this in all of recorded history. There's no sermon ever preached that had as wide-spread a response among those that it was originally preached to. So what happened when this reluctant prophet went to Nineveh? Click to learn more in Part 3 of our four part series on the Book of Jonah.

Questions That We'll Answer: 1) Why didn't Jonah want to go to Nineveh in the first place? 2) What happened when he showed up? How was he received? 3) Why did the Ninevites repent? Were any of them legitimately saved?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Jonah: Dread And Danger In Nineveh (Chapter 3)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

Jonah: Alone In The Dark (Chapter 2) Feb 19, 2023
    Show notes

Was the great fish God's judgment or His rescue?

In Jonah 2, Jonah prays from inside the belly of a great fish. Dr. Toby Holt asks whether that fish was God's punishment — or His surprising means of rescue.

Having fled from God and been thrown into the sea, Jonah should have drowned. Instead, God sends a great fish to swallow him — not to destroy, but to save. God sometimes uses dreadful circumstances to bring a stubborn heart to repentance. From the darkness, Jonah remembers the Lord, turns from idols, and declares: "Salvation is of the LORD."

    Questions this study answers:

    1. Was the fish judgment or mercy? It was mercy. The fish was God's means of rescuing Jonah from drowning and bringing him to repentance.

    2. Why does God sometimes allow hard circumstances? To turn stubborn hearts back to Himself. The fish was God's loving way of getting Jonah's attention.

    3. What does "Salvation is of the LORD" mean? That rescue comes from God alone, not from ourselves or our idols. That truth is the turning point of Jonah's story.

"But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving… Salvation is of the LORD." — Jonah 2:9 (NKJV)

Jonah: You Can Run, But Not Hide (Chapter 1) Feb 18, 2023
    Show notes

You can RUN from God. But you can't HIDE from God.

Has God every placed a call on your life that you've run away from? Has God ever called you - and instead of responding to His call, you ran? Well, that's what the prophet Jonah did. Jonah ran, got on a boat, and did everything he could to avoid going to Nineveh. But why? What was his issue? Click to learn more in Part 1 of this four part series.

Questions That We'll Answer: 1) Why did Jonah run from God? 2) Was Jonah really swallowed by a whale (or great fish)? 3) Is the book of Jonah a real, factual account - or just a helpful story?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Jonah: You Can Run, But Not Hide (Chapter 1)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

The Reformation: Not Ashamed Of The Gospel Feb 11, 2023
    Show notes

Should we soften the gospel to make it easier to accept?

No. In Romans 1:16, the Apostle Paul declares, "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ." In this Reformation Sunday sermon, Dr. Toby Holt calls the church to proclaim the gospel boldly and unashamedly, without watering it down.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. Why was Paul "not ashamed" of the gospel? Because it is "the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes." The message itself saves, so there is no reason to hide or soften it.

    2. What is the danger of watering down the gospel? It robs the message of its power and leaves sinners without the truth they need. To appease people at the cost of truth is to fail them.

    3. What does the Reformation remind us? That the gospel of grace, recovered by men like Luther, is worth proclaiming plainly and courageously in every age. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes." — Romans 1:16 (NKJV)

The Difference Between Theology And Philosophy Jan 29, 2023
    Show notes

Philosophy and theology are not the same thing. One looks inward, one looks upward. As a Christian, you need to consider the sources that are instructing you and your loved ones. Most sources rely on 'man centered wisdom' to teach other men. Depending on the topic, this is like the blind leading the blind. A transcendent source of revelation is much better. We'll consider this and more in today's study of Colossians 2 .

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in The Difference Between Theology And Philosophy?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

God Will Put You In A Storm (Why?) Jan 28, 2023

    B) Why does God allow us to face difficult circumstances?

    C) Where is God when we're going through a crisis?

The Gospel Is Like A Lion, It Can Defend Itself Jan 16, 2023
    Show notes

The Gospel is NOT TOOTHLESS. The Gospel is NOT WEAK.

In Scripture, we see that the Gospel is called the "power of God" unto salvation. And if that's true, then we should treat it as Charles Spurgeon did - as a lion to be let out, not as something to hide, package or subjugate beneath other things. Just preach it!

Questions We'll Address: 1) What is the Gospel? 2) Why does Paul call the Gospel the 'power' of God unto salvation? 3) How was the Gospel's power demonstrated in Acts 5?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in The Gospel Is Like A Lion, It Can Defend Itself?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?
