Ezekiel: The Watchman (Pt. 3) Mar 13, 2023
    Show notes

    What is a spiritual watchman?

In Ezekiel 3:16-21, God appoints the prophet as a "watchman" for His people. Dr. Toby Holt explains the watchman's solemn duty — and what it means for us.

A watchman had two jobs: to watch and to warn. If he saw danger and stayed silent, the people's blood would be on his hands. God tells Ezekiel the danger is not a foreign army but God's own judgment on sin, and he must warn both the wicked and the righteous. A faithful minister is measured by his faithfulness in speaking the truth, not by how people respond.

    Questions this study answers:

    1. What was a watchman? A guard who watched for danger and sounded the alarm. To stay silent when danger approached was to fail in his duty.

    2. What were the consequences of failing to warn? The watchman shared the guilt; the people's "blood" was on his hands. Faithfulness required speaking up.

    3. How does this apply to us? Each of us is called to warn and care for others with the truth. We are responsible to be faithful, even when people will not listen. "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me." — Ezekiel 3:17 (NKJV)

Ezekiel: God Calls And Sends The Prophet (Pt. 2) Mar 10, 2023
    Show notes

In Week 2 of our study, we consider Ezekiel's call to be a prophet. This was not an easy job - because Israel had a history of rejecting (and even killing) its prophets.

With that said, how would this young man respond to God's call? What would he say to his rebellious people? And would his words have any application to our own day and age, all of these centuries later? Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) Who was Ezekiel, and why did God call this young priest to be a prophet?

    B) What was the content of Ezekiel's prophetic ministry? What did he say?

    C) How would the people respond to his words (spoiler alert: not well).

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Ezekiel: God Calls And Sends The Prophet (Pt. 2)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?

Ezekiel: The Prophet & The Chariot Of Fire (Pt. 1) Mar 09, 2023
    Show notes

In Ezekiel 1, the prophet had an amazing vision. Specifically, the prophet saw a fiery whirlwind approach, and within the whirlwind was a CHARIOT OF FIRE - a chariot that was carried by angels, who flew amidst the chariot's fiery wheels. What was this vision all about? Click for Part 1 of our new 10 Part series in the Book of Ezekiel.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) What was Ezekiel doing in Babylon? How did he get there?

    B) What was the 'chariot of fire?' Was this a real object, or a symbol?

    C) What is the book of Ezekiel about? What is an outline for its pages?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Ezekiel: The Prophet & The Chariot Of Fire (Pt. 1)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?

Daniel: The Vision Of The Goat And Ram (Ch. 8) Mar 07, 2023
    Show notes

Can fulfilled prophecy prove the Bible is God's Word? In Daniel 8, Daniel records a vision of a ram and a goat — symbols of empires that would rise centuries later. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt shows how the angel's own interpretation lines up with the historical record, and what that means for our confidence in Scripture.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. What did Daniel see? A ram with two horns overpowered by a swift goat — a vision of clashing kingdoms.

    2. What do the symbols mean? The angel Gabriel identifies them plainly: the ram is the kings of Media and Persia, and the goat is the kingdom of Greece.

    3. Why does this matter? Because prophecy given long beforehand unfolded in history exactly as foretold, strengthening our trust that the Bible truly is God's Word.

"...he said, 'Look, I am making known to you what shall happen in the latter time of the indignation; for at the appointed time the end shall be.'" — Daniel 8:19 (NKJV)

Daniel: The Vision Of The Four Beasts (Ch. 7) Mar 06, 2023
    Show notes

In Daniel 7, the prophet watched as four beasts climbed out of the water - four violent, hideous creatures. But what were they? And what did they come to do? In today's sermon, we will consider the four beasts of Daniel's dream, and we'll try to identify who (or what) they represent.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) What was the purpose of Daniel's vision?

    B) What were the identities of the creatures that he saw? How can we be sure?

    C) What does this chapter tell us about our past and our future?

Daniel: The Prophet In The Lion's Den (Ch. 6) Mar 03, 2023
    Show notes

"The Devil is like a prowling lion, seeking who he can devour." This statement from 1 Peter 5 makes for an interesting contrast with the prophet's experience in the lion's den in Daniel 6 . In both cases, God's people are exposed to a creature that desires to eat them alive. And in both cases, God intervenes to prevent this from happening. Click on this sermon link to hear more. Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) Why was Daniel thrown into the lion's den in the first place?

    B) How did he survive? What happened to keep the lions at bay?

    C) How is this narrative instructive or encouraging to us all these years later?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Daniel: The Prophet In The Lion's Den (Ch. 6)?

Daniel: The Handwriting On The Wall (Ch. 5) Mar 02, 2023
    Show notes

What does it mean to be "weighed and found wanting"? In Daniel 5, a mysterious hand writes words of doom on the palace wall during King Belshazzar's feast. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt unpacks this dramatic scene and its sobering warning about pride and accountability before God.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. What did the writing say? "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" — a message of judgment: the king's days were numbered, and he had been weighed and found wanting.

    2. Why was Belshazzar judged? For his pride and irreverence — he had exalted himself against God and defiled what was holy.

    3. What is the warning for us? That every life is weighed before God. Pride invites judgment; only in Christ are we not "found wanting."

"TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting." — Daniel 5:27 (NKJV)

Daniel: The Conversion Of The King (Ch. 4) Mar 01, 2023
    Show notes

Is anyone too far gone for God's grace? In Daniel 4, the proud and brutal King Nebuchadnezzar is humbled by God — and then lifts his eyes to heaven and praises Him. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt considers the apparent conversion of one of history's great villains, and the reach of God's grace.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. How did God humble the king? He brought low his pride, driving him from his throne until he acknowledged that "the Most High rules in the kingdom of men."

    2. Did Nebuchadnezzar truly turn to God? His closing words praise and honor the God of heaven — a striking testimony that even the worst sinner is a candidate for grace.

    3. What hope does this give? That no one is beyond God's reach. If grace could humble and save Nebuchadnezzar, it can save anyone.

"Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven... And those who walk in pride He is able to put down." — Daniel 4:37 (NKJV)

Daniel: The Rise And Fall Of Nations (Ch. 4) Feb 28, 2023
    Show notes

Who really decides the rise and fall of nations? In Daniel 4, the mighty King Nebuchadnezzar learns a hard lesson: no empire, however glorious, outranks the Most High. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt shows that God alone rules over the nations and the course of history.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. What was Nebuchadnezzar's error? Pride — he believed his greatness was his own achievement, forgetting the God who gave it.

    2. How did God humble him? He brought the king low until he acknowledged that "the Most High rules in the kingdom of men."

    3. What does this teach us? That no nation or ruler is sovereign over God. Kingdoms rise and fall at His command, and He gives authority to whom He will.

"...till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses." — Daniel 4:25 (NKJV)

Daniel: Take A Stand For What You Believe (Ch. 3) Feb 27, 2023
    Show notes

Do you have integrity? Do you have principles? Will you stand for what you believe in?

Sometimes in life, our principles are put to the test. How do we respond in those moments? In today's study of Daniel 3, we'll see how Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego responded to King Nebuchadnezzar's decree - and how they would not deny their God, even when thrown into a fiery furnace. And then we'll see how they were rescued!

Questions That We'll Answer: 1) Why were Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego in danger? 2) In the big picture, what did the 'fiery furnace' of this chapter represent? 3) Who was the fourth figure that the King saw walking amidst the fire?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Daniel: Take A Stand For What You Believe (Ch. 3)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?
