15 Forever Fund targets substance use and abuse Mar 27, 2023

The 15 Forever Fund distributes grants to Boulder County youth-focused nonprofits, and in this year’s grant cycle, is fundraising for nonprofits addressing substance use and abuse in the youth community. The 15 Forever Youth Advisory Committee is excited to have received a match from the Hemera Foundation for the first $5,000 raised in fundraising.

Proclaiming Colorado’s Black History Feb 24, 2023

The Museum of Boulder, in partnership with Adrian Miller, the Boulder County NAACP Chapter and the Boulder Public Library’s Maria Rogers Oral History Program, is developing an exhibit and educational curricula to address the underrepresentation of Black histories in Colorado. The exhibit, PROCLAIMING COLORADO’S BLACK HISTORY, opens September 29, 2023. The program will collect original oral histories and research, consolidate research data and make it publicly available, and host a series of programs about race.

We are joined today by Adrian Miller, social historian, Soul Food Scholar and Co-Project Director and Lead Curator of the PROCLAIMING COLORADO’S BLACK HISTORY project.

Recovery Navigators: Navigating Disaster for Boulder County program Aug 26, 2022

We are having a conversation about the Navigating Disaster for Boulder County program, or Recovery Navigators, with Boulder County Recovery and Resiliency Project Manager, Katie Arrington. Over the last decade, Boulder County has been faced with a multitude of disasters in the form of floods, fires, shootings and pandemics. Each disaster has its own specific challenges and lessons to learn, but the lack of disaster response infrastructure is a consistent source of delay and frustration for survivors as well as those providing relief. Navigating Disaster for Boulder County, a program funded by Boulder County and the Community Foundation of Boulder County’s Boulder County Wildfire Fund, is an innovative model for this lack of infrastructure that plagues disaster response not just in Boulder County but in nearly every community across our country. The County is partnering with Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (LFSRM) on the administration of the program.

Mental health support after the Marshall Fire Feb 28, 2022

The almost two months since the Marshall Fire have felt like two years for many of our listeners, particularly those affected directly by this unimaginable tragedy. The trauma and stress brought on by the Marshall Fire has been difficult for so many of our friends and neighbors, not just those directly affected. Two wonderful organizations in our community recently received funding from the Boulder County Wildfire Fundfor their important mental health support in the wake of the Marshall Fire.

Impact on Education received $265,000 to partially fund mental health advocates at the most fire-affected schools in the Boulder Valley School District
Boulder Jewish Family Services received $250,000 to provide crisis counseling to anyone who needs it in individual and group settings, with trauma-informed practices

The COVID-10 pandemic has given rise to an increase in homeless encampments in the City of Boulder. This month on our radio show, the Community Foundation’s Jim Williams takes on the root cause of this phenomenon – Boulder County’s lack of affordable housing, and what’s being done to address it. Preventing elder abuse in Boulder County Dec 09, 2020

A scammer recently convinced a local senior citizen to buy gift cards and then read him the access codes. When his target went to purchase the cards at a service desk, the grocery store clerk said, “Wow these are used a lot of time to scam people. Are you sure this isn’t a scam?” That was all it took to interrupt one of many instances of elder abuse we’ve seen in Boulder County this year. On this month’s “A Public Affair,” hosted by Community Foundation Boulder County, District Attorney Michael Dougherty and Liz Parker, a consumer specialist with his office, describe what a big problem elder abuse has become, and steps we can all take to prevent it.

Holocaust by Bullets Exhibit Nov 26, 2018

Host Jim Williams discusses the Holocaust by Bullets exhibit now open to the public at the Boulder JCC. The Holocaust by Bullets Exhibit focuses on the history of the Holocaust by Bullets–the mass shootings of Jews and others that took place throughout Eastern Europe by the Nazi mobile killing units from 1941 to 1944–and the mechanisms of mass violence generally. It pays homage to the memories of the victims while seeking to promote a proactive movement against genocide.

Building a Latino Parent Revolution May 21, 2016

The achievement gap between Latino and Anglo students is wider in Boulder County than just about anywhere else in Colorado. The Community Foundation is working directly with Latino parents to help fight this trend, through a new program called Engaged Latino Parents Advancing School Outcomes. Two years in, ELPASO has reached more than 1,600 Latino parents of 0-5 year olds, and trained 50 Latino parent leaders who have hosted more than 200 house meetings and trained hundreds more parents. Our host, Chris Barge, directs ELPASO in his role as Director of the Foundation’s School Readiness Initiative. His guests are two of the Latino parents at the heart of this Latino parent revolution: Veronica Sangabriel, one of ELPASO’s three School Readiness Coordinators, and Chely Meraz, a Latino parent leader who has been transformed by ELPASO and has helped transform other parents through ELPASO.

BRAVO Fund Empowers Latinos Feb 17, 2016

Latinos are the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in Boulder County. However, just because the census numbers are changing in our county doesn’t mean our personal networks and institutions are. Almost every major issue in Boulder County, whether it’s access to education, affordable housing, or well-paying jobs, has a greater impact on Latinos than non-Latinos. The Community Foundation’s BRAVO Fund was established in 2014 as a way to help address some of these issues. BRAVO encourages interested individuals to pool their charitable dollars for grant-making to Latino communities, thereby promoting social justice, strengthening opportunities for leadership, and empowering Latinos to give to a fund that will benefit their own communities. The Community Foundation’s Maegan Vallejo will host “A Public Affair” on February 22 at 8:35am. Guests will include Benita Duran, Chair of the BRAVO Fund and former Chair of The Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees; Carmen Ramirez, BRAVO Fund Advisory Committee member and current Trustee of The Community Foundation; and Deborah Gardner, Boulder County Commissioner.

Living Wage Campaign in Boulder Jan 25, 2016

Access to Specialty Care for Boulder County’s Medically Underserved May 21, 2015

Boulder County is home to nearly 44,000 Medicaid/CHP+ enrollees – with another 33,000 people remaining uninsured even after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which greatly expanded insurance coverage. That means that at least 1 in 4 Boulder County residents is currently challenged in accessing specialty care beyond the primary care setting. Join guests Dr. Valerie Lipetz, Chief Medical Officer of Ambulatory Services at Boulder Community Health and Simon Smith, President and CEO of Clinica Family Health to understand the current barriers to specialty care referrals for under-insured patients and how the Boulder County Health Improvement Collaborative, a program of The Community Foundation, hopes to move the needle for specialty care access.

Boulder County Latino History Project Sep 22, 2014

Rich Lopez, Community Foundation Trustee, will be joined by Linda Arroyo-Holstrom and Magdalena Casillas to share the work of the Boulder County Latino History Project. The project, a collaborative, grass-roots initiative, is documenting and describing the history of Latinos in our area over the past century. It is focusing on the towns of Longmont (an agricultural center), Lafayette (a coal mining community), and Boulder (shaped by commerce and the University of Colorado). Currently the group is writing a book about their findings, generating interactive computer maps showing Latino-headed households across the 20th century, and working with the county’s two school districts to produce teaching units that incorporate Latino material into the curriculum at all grade levels.

The Temporary Human Services Safety Net Jul 22, 2013

In 2010, Boulder County voters approved a five-year property tax to help prevent people teetering on the brink of financial disaster from falling over the edge. The Temporary Human Services Safety Net has pumped about $5 million annually into county services in an effort to close some of the gap in human services funding resulting from state budget cuts. With an emphasis on prevention, that money has helped keep more people in their homes, keep more kids with their families, and make sure our most vulnerable residents have the resources they need to make ends meet. Graduation and Drop-Out Gains in Boulder County Feb 26, 2013

Both Boulder County school districts have made strides in improving their graduation and drop-out rates in recent years – especially for low-income students and students of color, who continue to lag their peers. For example, just 60% of economically disadvantaged students graduated on time in Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) in 2010. Last year, 74% did. In this month’s episode of “A Public Affair,” we discuss some of the interventions that are working.
